Helen Mirren: sheer matching magic

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

With Helen Mirren, it's all about nuances. Here she matches her nails to her dress, but in a way that says "pulled together" instead of "matchy-matchy." Her secret? The color is in the same family as her dress, but it's a lighter shade, a small but important distinction. Also the sheerness keeps it from being to heavy. If you're all about the subtle details, like Helen, then Essie Sheers are your nails' best friends.

Oscar Coverage: Battle of the ages -- Helen Mirren vs. Miley Cyrus

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

This was a fierce battle of the ages between little 15-year-old Miley Cyrus and 62 year old Helen Mirren. Both were beautiful ladies in red at the Oscars so I thought we'd pit them off against each other in spite of their 47 year age difference.

Let me start by saying that Helen Mirren is fierce. And no, I did not say fierce for her age. She's fierce for any age! Her gown was awesome, it totally showed off her rocking body. Her makeup, with perfectly matched lips and nails finished off the look and made it look very polished. With so much going on in the sleeves, I think it was wise that she didn't go with a necklace. That would have been too much.

And Miley looked amazing as well! I was thrilled to see her dressing for her age. She didn't look too old or too young, just too cute for words! Her hair and makeup were simple and worked perfectly for this fresh-faced up and coming star. Little Hannah Montana is all grown up! I'm going to give this battle to Miley. What can I say? She has youth on her side.

Helen Mirren turns down free Botox!

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

As if you needed another reason to love Dame Helen Mirren, in addition to being incredibly talented and intelligent, she's also a natural beauty. The British actress refused to accept offers of free plastic surgery and Botox treatments prior to the Academy Awards. Mirren, who won Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, received several service vouchers in a pre-Oscar goodie bag. Instead of cashing in on the free goods, Mirren opted to look her best on Oscar night the natural way with good makeup, a smashing dress and a million dollar smile.

Mirren says, "I'm not fond of all those needles and scalpels. I'll try to get away with make-up, jewelery and a nice frock."

Poll: Who wins for Best Dressed on the Red Carpet?

Alright, dolls. I know we're all in the middle of watching the golden statuettes being handed out, but you have to find something to do during the commercial breaks, right? As a member of the Styledash Academy, you're obligated to vote for who you believe was the Best Dressed on the Red Carpet tonight. The style ran the gamut from Meryl Streep in Boho Chic to full-on Hollywood glamour, but we were able to narrow down the choices to these six nominees. Make your vote in the comments (and if you followed along during our liveblogging, you probably know who I'm voting for), and if you think we very grossly overlooked someone, feel free to let us know!
  • Penelope Cruz - pretty in pink
  • Portia di Rossi - braided beauty
  • Nicole Kidman - red hot
  • Reese Witherspoon - dark angel
  • Beyonce - light mint lady
  • Helen Mirren - golden goddess

Golden Globe cheers for Helen Mirren!

Oh, the Golden Globes -- the gowns, the flashes, the speeches, the tediously long commercial breaks. Award show traditions aside, I would like to give a hearty two thumbs up to actress Helen Mirren who won Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Elizabeth I.

I'll be the first one to admit that before The Queen, I had never heard of Mirren. However, after seeing her elegant, tasteful and sexy appearances at a number of premiers, I've become quite smitten with her. For one, Helen Mirren makes me hold onto the hope that I too can be a smoking hot 61-year-old without sacrificing my soul the gods of plastic surgery.

The way that Helen made it work last night at the Golden Globes is the same way she makes it work at all of her appearances through a winning combination of good color (I'm unable to find her wearing black in any of the Google image pictures), subdued make-up and a confidence that says she doesn't need to be 26 to be beautiful.
