Filed under: Stores We Love, Style Tip of the Day

Just like you, we are suckers for all things simple and free – a comfy tailored jacket, a ruffled top, a floaty dress, or a sweet denim mini. But finding all of these things together in one line is often hard to come by. That is until we found Golden State.

Tip of the day: Tiered skirts

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Style Tip of the Day

Zac Posen
Let's play a little game. When we say "tiered skirt", what's the first thing that comes to mind? Hippies? Flower power? Prairies? We're about to erase that perception from your mind. No, not by our mind boggling Tom Cruise like super powers (you wish!). It's far simpler than that. We're going to introduce you to the flirty skirts present at the Luella, Givenchy, and Zac Posen spring/summer 2008 runways.

How to wear a quilt and not look stupid

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Dresses

When I think of women who wear quilts as clothing, hippies immediately come to mind. But not real hippies, just "nu age" types who drink Chai tea no-caf-half-lip-wrappa-frappa lattes from Starbucks and talk about "love and light in the moment" (while having absolutely no idea what that means). Bleh. Ugh. Wretch.

But never fear, die-hard quilt fan, because it is possible to wear a blanket as a garment and still look cool. The French design collective, Andrea Crews, came up with this dress that, as far as I can tell, simply has a quilt sewn on top of it -- and it looks fantastic. I love the way it hangs down as decoration, but can also be pulled out to be fully displayed every time someone asks: "is that a real quilt?" Or, presumably, whenever you want to draw attention to yourself.

While it might look simple, take care before trying this at home. The dress works mostly because of how the colors work together, so make sure you choose your color scheme accordingly. Also, I'd make sure you sew the quilt onto the same part of the dress (just beneath the bust), or it will be incredibly unflattering.

Pricey hippie moisturizer

They've got that signature patchouli stank; they sport those backless shirts, which look like boob-curtains; they travel with dogs, and they consume more granola per capita than any other demographic. Now, tell me, friend, what's not to love about the hippies?

Oh yeah, I forgot about the jam-bands and the circle dancing.

But aside from that, the peaceniks have brought the rest of us some pretty amazing natural products over the years. The "Make Love, Not War" set seems to excel especially in the area of great moisturizers. One such hippie lotion is Nature Girl's "Peace, Love, Nature, Baby" moisturizer. The soothing formula uses wildcrafted shea butter, safflower oil and sea algae to nurture and protect your skin. With five different "synergies", these moisturizers address the individual needs of oily skin, dry skin, combination skin and normal skin. After all, the hippies know that one size doesn't fit all -- unless it's a boob-curtain. Price: $38.
