These days, who can afford a designer handbag at full price? (And hey, if you can, don't brag -- we don't want to hear about it!) But, you know, you don't have to pay full price for fabulous designer wares. You just need to know where to shop -- a site like ideeli.com could be the answer to your shopping prayers. Members pay a fraction of the retail price for amazing, high-end pieces!

Then again, there's something to be said for free, and this week, we're giving away this gorgeous Hype "Alexis" handbag from ideeli.com! If you love it, you need to enter our giveaway -- the bag was so popular that ideeli doesn't have any left!

The bag is made from Italian soft lamb leather and is a hobo style with an adjustable cross body strap. You'll notice the super stylish ruffled and tiered detailing, but the winner will be even happier to have a zip pocket and three slide pockets within. Who says fashion can't be functional?

And, of course, entering to win couldn't be easier.

Joaquin Phoenix at the premiere of Two LoversIf you've been wondering how Joaquin Phoenix has been getting that frizzy, disheveled, hippie hobo-meets-grizzly bear look, your long wait may finally be over. A photo posted here (we don't have the rights to the photo) shows what may be the secret behind the decidedly Rick Rubin-esque look that Joaquin has been sporting since the launch of his hip hop career. It's the EZ Comb -- as seen on TV.

Why aren't you wearing this? Mossimo Large Hobo Bag

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Must Haves

While we think the oversized handbag has been somewhat overdone, we also know that it has its place. You don't need to carry a bag that's half your size around with you every day, but for those occasions on which you need a second outfit, or an extra pair of shoes, or a bunch of school work, you can't beat a large bag.

The new Coach bag: Ergo

At last a Coach bag without that extra ten pounds of crazy brass hardware weighing it down. We've loved the style of Coach for years, but our little shoulders, or our habit of carrying everything in the world in our bag, kept us from ever getting one.

The company finally figured out that they're missing a target market, Bag Crazy Bag Ladies, and came out with a new line called "Ergo" which is short for ergonomic. Lightweight, soft, with clean lines, we're very tempted by these bags. They're still crazy expensive, but the Coach story has always been "you'll have it forever" so maybe that works for you. Prices and some pretty colors in the gallery.

When you check out the site, make sure to click on the awesome "Try this bag on" feature on the site. It shows you the scale of the bag on an average woman, both holding it in your hand and on your shoulder.

Ask Styledash: Gift for our 3rd anniversary

It's in the Bag
Last week, a friend of Styledash asked for help in finding a gift for his wife for their 3rd wedding anniversary. After getting over the amazement that marriage has lasted that long (we live in LA and all we hear about our "marriages" that last no longer than the morning line at Starbucks), we started to panic. Third anniversary? What does one get one's spouse for a third anniversary?

Leather.

Putting visions of chaps and riding whips aside, we decided that a handbag would be the perfect leather gift. With a budget of $100-$200, and a willingness to go slightly over if it promised benefits, we found nine bags that would be perfect:
  • Kenneth Cole Large Buckle Satchel - for a woman who has an entire shelf of black or brown leather bags, red is a great addition to spice things up. $204 at Bluefly.com
  • Cole Haan "Paige" Medium Tote - A classic Cole Haan bag will always be the quintessential piece and will last forever, just like your marriage. $186 at Bluefly.
  • BCBG Aloe Leather "Montana" Handbag - Shaped like a Boston bag, this handbag is functional and fashionable, especially in the brownish green aloe color. $161 at Bluefly.
  • Hype "Canela" Satchel - Though camel color is usually associated with the warmer months, the Canela satchel is sturdy enough to work for fall and winter. $135 at Bluefly.com.
  • Hype Chocolate Leather "Assago" Shoulder Bag - Chocolate colored leather is the perfect all-around bag since it dark color works well with both black and brown. $113 at Bluefly.com
  • Via Spiga Pewter "Madeline" Leather Hobo - The hobo, though a relatively new-again trend, is now here to stay. In pewter leather, it's definitely "in" for the metallic trend of fall and winter. At Bluefly.com
  • Via Spiga "Neela" Tassel Hobo - Another hobo style, and perhaps the best bargain of the bunch, the Neela is slightly more interesting with the addition of a tassel. $99 at Bluefly.com
  • Furla Ivory Leather Logo Tote - Who says you can't wear (or carry) white in the winter? Furla certainly doesn't, with its simple, sophisticated ivory leather logo tote. $94 at Bluefly.com.
  • Michael Kors "Wetherby" Large Shoulder Bag - This is the splurge for our friend, but the stylish lines of a functional shoulder bag are wrth it. It's Michael Kors. $348 at ShopBop.

VanDe K urban hobo bag

When I was at L.A. Fashion Week in October, one of the most charming people I met was handbag designer Kara VanDe Hoef. Kara is the designer behind VanDe K, a small line of simple, all purpose bags. She is a graduate of LA's Fashion Institute and her vision is to create high-end handbags in performance fabric so that they can be everyday bags which won't fall apart at a moment's notice.

Her latest bag is the Urban Ultrasuede Hobo, a soft yet rugged bag with a inside zip pocket, hidden magnetic closure, satin lining and nickel hardware. The bag comes in four colors and sells for $365.

StyleDash handbag giveaway: Day 22

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Contests & Giveaways

The StyleDash 30-day handbag giveaway continues! Every weekday, we are giving away a designer handbag to a lucky reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like wear green jeans. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our 22nd giveaway, we are returning to the "Hobo" from Marc by Marc Jacobs, pictured here. The Hobo is aptly named, and is nearly big enough to carry all your possessions as you wander through train yards. You are not required to be an itinerant vagrant in order to win this bag, but you should be willing to appear that way. Kidding, kidding. My wife tells me this is a gorgeous bag, and I'm taking her word for it. Click the pic for more info.

The bag could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to love sonnets, but if you've got love to give we'll receive it.

2) No duplicates! If you have multiple personalities, please -- just one of you enter. If you try to double-dip we'll catch it.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. Share the wealth.

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the 30-day contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon Friday (10/13), when the next giveaway will be posted. Congratulations to Jessica, who won the Coach Hamptons book tote in Day 21!

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

StyleDash handbag giveaway: Day 13

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Contests & Giveaways

The StyleDash 30-day handbag giveaway continues! Every weekday, we are giving away a designer handbag to a lucky U.S. or Canadian reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like wear jean shorts. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our 13th giveaway, we are returning to the "Hobo" from Marc by Marc Jacobs, pictured here. The poor thing looks exhausted. Maybe a nap would perk it up. Yet my wife's words are ringing in my ears: "That is one gorgeous bag!" Well, it's priced that way, with a retail value over $400. Click the pic to see the pricey details. Will I buy this for my wife? Great philosophers could speculate for decades. But she's not getting this particular one, so keep your sympathetic comments coming (she reads 'em all), and try to grab the bag for your own bad self.

The Hobo could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to imaginative punctuation, but we are desperately in need of entertainment.

2) No duplicates! Our NASA software detects them.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. If you win twice, others will cry. Then how would you feel?

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the 30-day contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon Monday (10/2), when the next giveaway will be posted.

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

StyleDash handbag giveaway: Day 10

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Contests & Giveaways

The StyleDash 30-day handbag giveaway continues! Every weekday, we are giving away a designer handbag to a lucky reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like wear high-waisted jeans. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our 10th giveaway, we are returning to the "Hobo" from Marc by Marc Jacobs, pictured here. A NY Times style columnist once called the handbag "the epicenter of the household." Well, you could just about fit your entire household into the Hobo, then hitchhike around the country. The retail price of this encompassing leather maw is over $400. That's one expensive piece of slouch. It might look like a water bag for your horse, but that shouldn't stop you from wearing it proudly this fall. The leather is soft; the hardware is antique silver; the lining is floral cotton. Click the pic for more info.

The bag could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to rhyming comments, but if you're in a rhyming mood we'd like to hear it.

2) No duplicates! Please curb your multiple personalities. If you try to double-dip we'll catch it.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. The karmic repercussions of greed are severe.

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the 30-day contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon Wednesday (9/27), when the next giveaway will be posted. Congratulations to Kimberly Palmier, who won the Coach Hamptons book tote in Day 9!

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

StyleDash handbag giveaway: Day 7

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Contests & Giveaways

The StyleDash 30-day handbag giveaway continues! Every weekday, we are giving away a designer handbag or book tote to a lucky reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like wear long underwear beneath skinny jeans. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our seventh giveaway, it's back to the "Hobo" from Marc by Marc Jacobs, pictured here. Regular readers detect a pattern, no doubt. We are rotating among three handbags, of which the Hobo is, by far, the most droopy. It's a stylish droop, I'm told. Readers attempting to get this bag number in the thousands. My wife hopes I'll cheat and get it for her. (I won't.) She reads all the comments, by the way, so feel free to offer your sympathy.

The bag could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to rhymed couplets, but if you've got a rhyme in your heart, please share.

2) No duplicates! Identical twins may each enter once. If you try to double-dip we'll catch it and hold a grudge.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. We know you deserve to win every day, but others have feelings, too.

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the 30-day contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon Friday (9/22), when the next giveaway will be posted. Congratulations to Cheryl DeLauer for winning the Coach Hamptons book tote in Day 6!

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

StyleDash handbag giveaway: Day 4

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Contests & Giveaways

The StyleDash 30-day handbag giveaway continues! Every weekday, we are giving away a designer handbag or book tote to a lucky reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like wear clashing colors. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our fourth giveaway, we are returning to the "Hobo" from Marc by Marc Jacobs, pictured here. The Hobo is aptly named, and is nearly big enough to carry all your possessions as you wander through train yards. You are not required to be an itinerant vagrant in order to win this bag, but you should be willing to appear that way. Kidding. My wife tells me this is a gorgeous item, and I'm taking her word for it.

The bag could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to love sonnets, but if you've got love to give we'll receive it.

2) No duplicates! Identical twins may each enter once. If you try to double-dip we'll catch it and hold a grudge.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. We know you deserve to win every day, but others have feelings, too.

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon Tuesday (9/19), when the next giveaway will be posted. Congratulations to Angela Palmer, who won a Coach hamptons pebbled leather book tote on Day 3.

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

We've opened our doors, and we want to celebrate. This blog is hitting the ground running, with over 350 posts for your reading pleasure, features galore, and ... a stylish giveaway!

For the next 30 days, we will give away a designer handbag or book tote to a lucky reader. The emphasis is on "lucky," because we're not asking you to do anything difficult, like pose for a head shot before applying hair product. You just need to drop a comment onto the contest page. We'll select the winner randomly. I'll get to the rules in a minute. First, today's prize:

For our inaugural giveaway, we are offering the Hobo, from Marc Jacobs, pictured here. It's a casual accessory, but the non-casual retail price sharply distinguishes it from a water bag you'd sling over a camel in the desert. Well, that, plus the grained leather, antique silver hardware, 10-inch drop (camels prefer snug fits), cotton lining, leather-trimmed zipper pocket, and cell phone pocket (camels are not chatty).

Anyway, the bag could be yours, if you follow these rules:

1) Leave a comment on this post. Doesn't matter what you say. No special consideration is given to Portuguese haikus, but please -- make our day.

2) No duplicates! That doesn't mean your identical twin cannot enter. It does mean that each of you can enter only once per contest day. If you try to double-dip we'll catch it and hold a grudge. Then you'll be barred for good and everyone will be sad.

3) If you win, don't come back for seconds. How many designer handbags do you need? Don't answer that.

4) Prizes will be shipped 30-45 days after the contest ends. Patience is a virtue.

Today's contest will stay open until noon tomorrow (Thursday), when the next giveaway will be posted. From then on, each contest will start and end at noon.

Good luck, and thanks for being part of StyleDash!

Big bags brag bling

To paraphrase Sir Mix-a-lot, they like big bags and they will not lie.

As Ellen Tien notes in a recent New York Times article "Big Bag, Bigger Biggest," fashionistas everywhere are struck by the current bigger-is-better approach to carry-alls.

Why rent a posh apartment or buy an SUV, goes the conventional wisdom, when you can simply spend an equally ridiculous amount of money on a high-payload handbag?

Among other tidbits, Tien profiles a Devi Kroell bag that retails for $2890 but is in a style known as the "hobo." Ironic? Perhaps, but if you've got nearly three grand to drop on a handbag, I suppose you can call it whatever you like, from "hobo" to "vagrant" to "street urchin."
