New Marilyn Monroe Photos Surface

Filed under: Style in the News

LIFE has released new photos today of Marilyn Monroe -- on what would have been the starlet's 83rd birthday. The 1950 images were photographed by Ed Clark; the never-before-published negatives were discovered in LIFE's effort to digitize its vast archive.

Check out the black-and-white images of the fresh-faced style-icon-in-training above, taken in 1950. We love the natural influences -- the creek, the sunlight peeking through the leaves -- and simple, straight-on shots. She looks so young and innocent, you'd guess she was still "Norma Jean," but the her monogrammed "MM" shirt indicates otherwise. (Plus, those high-waisted shorts are to die for.)

Marilyn Monroe - Still a Style Icon (and These Numbers Prove It!)

Marilyn Monroe: Style Icon

Marilyn Monroe was a sex symbol and style icon while she was alive, but her influence remains just as strong more than 45 years after her death. Don't believe us? Just wait until you hear how much certain pieces of Marilyn memorabilia is going for!

    Getty Images

Marilyn's dress from "Some Like it Hot" was so tiny that the curvaceous starlet had to be literally sewn into it. And on a recent edition of "Antiques Roadshow" the current owner of that particular little black dress was shocked to learn that it's worth $150,000 to $250,000!

    Getty Images

And the dress isn't the only thing worth a bundle. A group of 36 images of Monroe, which were taken for Vogue magazine the year that she died, were sold at auction for almost $150,000. The pictures in question were about to be published when the magazine was made aware of Monroe's death, and were used instead as a tribute in Vogue.

    Getty Images

Marilyn's appeal was due to much more than her feminine curves and platinum blonde hair -- her innocence and vulnerability endeared her to men and women alike.

    Getty Images

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson (later changed to Norma Jeane Baker) in 1926, she changed her name and dyed her hair blonde in 1946, which was when her career really took off. She landed a number of movie roles, each garnering her praise, and in 1954 she married baseball star Joe DiMaggio.

    Getty Images

On their honeymoon, she stopped to entertain the troops. Her presence nearly caused a riot. This was the first step toward the demise of their nine-month marriage, although, the couple remained friends.

    Getty Images

Successful, single, and already an icon, Monroe decided to pursue "serious acting," moving to New York to study at the Actors' Studio. She met and married playwright Arthur Miller, who wrote a part specifically for her in "The Misfits." They divorced in 1961, but a year later, Marilyn was named Female World Film Favorite at the Golden Globes, solidifying her status as one of the world's most beloved stars of the silver screen.

    Getty Images

The blonde bombshell inspired thousands of designers and artists, one of the most famous being Andy Warhol. His pop art of actress is recognized all over the world.

    Getty Images

Although, if you want to talk about something highly recognizable, you can't beat the image of Marilyn in the white dress in Seven Year Itch. This dress has been emulated by young starlets on the red carpet (and many of the rest of us) ever since.

Proof that Marilyn Monroe sells: Hundreds, if not thousands, of magazine covers have been dedicated to her.

Mary-Kate Olsen's lazy style

Mary-Kate OlsenMary-Kate Olsen is utterly baffled as to why she's considered a fashion icon (and that makes two of us). Women all over the world have been inexplicably drawn to her "homeless chic" style of giant, layered dresses and sweaters, but apparently, MK's trendsetting status came about entirely by accident.

A dark day for fashion: Yves Saint Laurent has died

Filed under: Style in the News

One of the most influential fashion designers of our time has passed away. Yves Saint Laurent died today in Paris at the age of 71. No cause of death has yet been released.

Saint Laurent is probably the main force behind women wearing pants on a daily basis. When he suggested pants for women, it was considered highly controversial, but he said that his job was "to make clothes that reflect our times. I'm convinced women want to wear pants." Obviously, he was right.

Heidi Klum vs Iman: Catwalk catfight?

Though it could have been the start of a feud between Heidi Klum, host of the U.S.'s version of Project Runway and Iman, host of Canada's version, it appears that will not be the case.

Iman was recently quoted as saying that she has much more high fashion experience than Klum. Claws out, right? Well, when Heidi was asked about it at the launch of her line of jeans for Jordache at Bloomingdales, she responded by saying Iman was right. Huh? Is that the kind of behavior we expect from a supermodel?

Breaking news: Mary Kate Olsen wears something normal

I almost fell off my couch when I saw Mary Kate Olsen's semi-normal outfit for a screening of "21," yesterday. She looks cute, trendy and dare I say it -- mainstream.

Granted a one piece short suit with a neon pink belt wouldn't be considered normal on anyone else. But give her a break. We're talking about the girl who once wore a giant diaper to an major event.
