OlovesM eco-friendly bag made from recycled materialsI'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Merle OBrien, the Aspen, Colorado-based designer behind a line of eco handbags called OlovesM, which were recently handed out to celebs attending the Sundance Film Festival. These fashionable and environmentally friendly bags feature predominantly recycled materials, including a snazzy sport/diaper bag made from repurposed yoga mats.

How did you get started as a designer? I was in yoga class and the idea for my bags just popped into my head, so I ran off my mat and started doing a ton of research, and cut and sewed a lot of prototypes until I figured it out. I am one of those people who is always thinking about ideas, and some seem to work, while others just help me learn more do's and dont's about business!!

One of my favorite alternative clothing designers is Lori Marsha, who got her start designing handbags and jewelry almost ten years ago and has more recently expanded her work to include some stunning revamped and recycled wearable works of art. Her pieces aren't for everyone, but for those who aren't afraid to stand out and who are looking for a truly one-of-a-kind look, Lori Marsha's designs are absolutely inspiring.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work.
I design one of a kind garments and accessories from primarily recycled components. I work from my home in Redlands, California and enjoy the solitude and joy that comes with the creative process.

Indie Designer Interviews: Wired Originals

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Interviews

I'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with jewelry designer Cari Taylor of Wired Originals.

Tell me a little about your work. I create original designs using sterling silver wire, gemstones, glass, and leather. I like to describe my pieces as "unordinary jewelry for everyday wear" -- jewelry that goes equally well with that little cocktail dress or your favorite faded blue jeans.

How did you get started as a designer? Since I was a kid, I've been a crafty critter, always crocheting or drawing or writing. I decided to pursue jewelry making in January of '07, and I naturally gravitated toward wire work after messing around with some wire sculpture in the past. I've also incorporated crochet into my wire and leather work. With the support of friends and family, I launched my online store in April.

What inspires your work? I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere, including the different hues of sky and earth, the angles of architecture, and unusual found objects.

Indie Designer Interviews: Yen Jewelry

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Interviews

Yen JewelryI'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. The little guys who are working so hard to compete with mainstream fashion labels to earn your respect and your own hard-earned dollars. These designers often do so while juggling 9-5 jobs, college, kids and more. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you a new, ongoing segment I call "Indie Designer Interviews". First up is Nicole of Yen Jewelry.

Tell me a little about yourself and your company. An avid shopper, artist and lover of fashion, I design and handcraft jewelry using finer metals and gem-grade semiprecious stones. My line, Yen Jewelry, consists of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and limited release pieces. My work has been featured by various media, including DailyCandy and Lucky Magazine, to name a couple.

How did you get started as a designer? I started making jewelry as something new to try and because I never could find anything on the market that I liked. While my first attempts were nothing I would wear, let alone show to others, I quickly got better and wasn't embarrassed to wear what I was making. Soon after, requests for orders were coming my way and Yen Jewelry officially launched in April 2006.
