Finally: Diversity Starting to Rear its Head in Modeling Industry

Filed under: Style in the News

Firstly, we don't think the following phenomenon means the modeling industry no longer has a problem with diversity. Our excitement, in fact, should suggest otherwise since seeing people of color in prominent fashion glossies shouldn't warrant attention because our world is, well, not comprised of human beings that all look the same.

That said, models of Indian decent are finally having what they call a "moment" in fashion right now. Lakishma Menon, who just snagged the Hermes and Givenchy campaigns, was recently snapped by Mario Testino for Vogue Paris and Patrick Demarchlier for La Wintour's tome. Also, IMG newbie Kangana Dutta was recently shot for Harper's Bazaar.

Hopefully, this isn't just a temporary thing because these girls are fire!

Fashion TV under fire in India

Filed under: Style in the News

bollywood dancersWe seem to get away with a lot of skin on TV here in the US, but not so in India. India's Information Minister has warned a fashion-fcoused television channel, Fashion TV, "aganist denigrating culture" for airing what Priyaranjan Dasmunsi considers raunchy. Not only is it raunchy, but Dasmunsi has brought it to attention because the broadcasts are made during children's viewing times. Dasmunsi would like "for Fashion TV channel to think of whether they should confine their program beyond 11 (p.m.)."

The programs in question? Music videos featuring sexy dancers and a suggestive advertisement of a woman licking an ice cream.

Wow. If that were the case here in the US, we'd have nothing but blank screens on tv.
