Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Isaac Mizrahi

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

SHOW: Isaac Mizrahi
MAKEUP: Tom Pecheux
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: You're never fully dressed without a (glam red) smile

THE SCOOP: Backstage, it was all about the lips at Isaac Mizrahi's Fall 2009 Runway Show. The designer himself was very involved in the exact shade of red, saying, "this is more of a berry - we want really bright," as he told a model to eat first before going back to makeup to get her lips redone. The theme of Mizrahi's fall collection is "Smile" and "bright red lips make everyone smile," said the designer. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux garnered inspiration from the clothing. "They are very eclectic, full of fantasy and color," he said, "so I want red lips that are very sharp and clear." He used red lipstick with red pigment powder on top for an ultra matte finish. The rest of the face was left bare, save foundation and powder for "pure-looking skin." Pecheux also found the lipstick fun, and perfect for now. "It's true that women wear red lipstick during recessions," he said. "When you don't have enough money for a new outfit, handbag or shoes, you can still buy a new lipstick. But when you do spend the money, you want it to be impactful, and red lips change everything!"

We really like our sense of style, but we're always interested in how the experts suggest we update or change it, so when we had a chance to review Isaac Mizrahi's new book, How to Have Style, we jumped at the chance.

Dress of the Day: Isaac Mizrahi Color Block Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mizrahi color block dressWe love the look of navy blue and white for Spring, and this year, we're seeing a splash of kelly green added to the color duo all over the place to make for a striking threesome. Isaac Mizrahi's Color Block dress really allows the color combination to stand out with a 100% polyester matte jersey color blocked dress. The dress features a high neck, cut away sleeves, a classic long lean silhouette, and the navy blue, contrasting lighter blue, and kelly green. We love this dress for a casual day look with a pair of navy blue ballet flats, or dressed up for a weekend brunch with Mom and Dad with a pair of round-toe navy and white spectator pumps.

The dress is available from Target.com for $29.99.

Dress of the Day: Cowl Neck Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

mizrahi cowl neck sweater dressThursday is the new Friday.

At least in my world it is.

That means after work, I like to twirl about town with girlfriends as if it were Friday night. Since we really do have to work the next day, the night starts and ends early. No time to go home and change! The Cowl Neck Sweater Dress by Isaac Mizrahi for Target is perfect because its 3/4 length sleeves make it functional at the desk, and the cowl neck sits up modestly. However, once the clock hits five, you can pull that cowl neck down on either side and make it off-the-shoulder. Smokin'. Change your conservative pearl earrings to a pair of sparkling chandeliers, throw your cute little ballet flats into the back seat and slip into your leopard print stiletto heels. You are ready to turn the town upside down!

At least, until 10:30.

The Cowl Neck Sweater Dress is $39.99 at Target.

Dress of the Day: Isaac Mizrahi Houndstooth Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

isaac mizrahi houndstooth print dressI'm picking dresses from Target as much as I can because let's face it -- it's December, which means your paychecks are already promised to gift-shopping and that big blowout of an outift for your Holiday parties (yes, you only need one Holiday dress since you won't see any of the same people at the four different parties you're going to, thank God!).

Isaac Mizrahi's Houndstooth Dress from Target is only...$29.99! Can you believe that? An adorable little houndstooth-printed dress with a "vintage sensibility" for under $30! The dress is made of 97% cotton/3% spandex and is lined with 65% polyester/35% cotton. I realise, of course, that it is December and this dress is a sleeveless shift, but that means you can layer a little black cardigan, jacket, or trench coat on top. Hitting right at the knee, you can wear this dress to work with a pair of smart flats, or go with a sassy pump.

Dress of they Day: Isaac Mizrahi Stretch Lace Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

isaac mizrahi black lace stretch dress at targetNow that we've gotten past Thanksgiving, it's time to think about the next big event. Whatever cultural tradition you celebrate, you know that some time during the month of December, there's going to be a Holiday party. Over the next few weeks, look out for our Dresses of the Day to help you put together the perfect party outfit.

Since it's still November, we might not wuite want to break out the shiny satin and jeweled tones (though there scertainly isn't anything wrong with that). For a small cocktail gathering on a Saturday, the Stretch Lace dress by Isaac Mizrahi is perfect. The dress has a classic shape with lady-like knee-length shirt and high, round neckline, but adds a subtle flirtatiousness because it's form-fitting and looks like sheer black lace. The dress is, however, lined with a 100% polyester nude slip. If you're fancy, strappy black sandals will go with the detail of the lace, but don't be afraid to rock the fierce pointed toe stilleto pumps.

Mizrahi's Stretch Lace Dress is $59.99 at Target.

Dress of the Day: Mizrahi Taffeta Trench Dress

Filed under: Holiday Style, Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

taffeta trench dress by isaac mizrahiTarget is already getting a jump on the Holidays with a sale on their new arrivals in dresses from Isaac Mizrahi. For one week (October 29 - November 4) the dresses, which are all geared toward holiday parties, are available online. While some of them are fairly simple, like a straight strapless sheath in black, others are a bit more fun like a bright turquoise blue dress with full skirt, that I swear, if you tied a white ribbon around your waist in place of the accompanying belt, would make you look like a giant giftbox from Tiffany's.

My favorite of the bunch is something in between, the Taffeta Trench Dress for $59.99. It's basically a shortsleeved trench coat, but made for "evening" with taffeta.

Dress of the Day: Metro 7 Babydoll

Filed under: Stores We Love, Must Haves

walmart's metro 7 babydoll dressMost of us are quite familiar with Isaac Mizrahi and the International "Go" lines that Target offers for trendier fashions. However, many of us may not know that Wal-Mart, too, has a "high end" apparel line. Metro 7, which debuted last fall, doesn't have any named designed attached to it, but the clothes are aimed at "hip urban fashionistas" who previously would come in for things like cereal and toilet paper, but would turn their noses up at " cheap, dowdy clothes now spilling off hangers."

This dress is from Wal-Mart's Metro 7 line -- a simple, sleeveless jersey babydoll dress with a deep V that overlaps in a little bit of modesty. The neckline and arms have a tiny ruffle. The waist is comfrtably elasticized and like the neckline, has an organza ribbon detail and sparkles. The dress comes in both black and grey with black detail, but the best part of the dress is that it probably costs less than that bulk toilet paper. It's only $16.94! The dress can be purchased online or in stores.

Dress of the Day: Isaac Mizrahi for Target boucle A-line dress

isaac mizrahi for target boucle a-line dressYou know how your boyfriend wonders why you have to have seven pairs of black shoes, and he just doesn't understand that even though they are all black, every single pair is different and goes with different outfits?!? Then how come we're supposed to have only one little black dress?

We're not.

Which is why shopping at Target for little black dresses is awesome. This black wool-blend boucle A-line dress by Isaac Mizrahi for Target has a high neckline and ribbon detail at the waist. Because the dress is from Target, and is only $39.99, you can either spend all that money you just saved on yet another pair of black shoes to match this dress, or fill up your closet with more little black dresses. Because come on, even if you have seven black dresses, you know every single one is totally different!

Seven Days of Style: Laptop bags, in the pink!

la la luscious leather in paris pinkWith just about everything you own reflecting your personal style these days -- from what color and kind of iPod you have to the accessories you do or don't have for your cell phone - why on earth would you go with a standard-issue black bag fabricated from ballistic nylon, or worse yet, pleather, laptop bag? I looked around, and instead of trying to cover every type of from backpacks to wheeled cases in different colors and styles, I decided to hone in on my favorite color: pink. Here are my seven picks for pink laptop bags, one for every day of the week. Don't worry, we will cover laptop bags again, and they won't all be pink, I promise.

If Marc Jacobs ever made a laptop bag, it would probably look a lot like the Luscious Leather line from La La (pictured above), whose tagline is "Fashionably late to work." I am a compartment freak, so I love that the bag has lots of little pockets for a wallet, cell phone, and other necessities.

laptop bag, isaac mizrahi for targetThe always affordable Target has an Isaac Mizrahi bag that has the designer's name in black splashed all over the white leather, but the cutest part is the pink trim and handles. The bag is $34.99. If Mizrahi isn't quite your style, Target has a lot of great laptop bags from which to choose, many of which are also pink.

tweedy-pie tote by melissa beth

Tweed fits right in with this season, and in bubblegum pink, it's totally feminine. The Tweedy-Pie Tote, which also comes in two other colors, is from Melissa Beth Designs, which also has a number of other bags (like a more traditional bag-style called "Pocket Full of 'Puter.") The Tweedy-Pie Tote is normally $250, but is on sale for 50% off.

plastic people by shannon l south laptop bagDesigner Shannon L. South's line is called Plastic People. Because her bags are made from vintage vinyl (hence, the name "plastic"), they are limited editions, so once she sells out of a design, she's done. Her past designs have included bright floral prints, but I love this simple pink with white trim. However, the heart is what sold me. ($165 for standard size, $10 more for larger bag.)

laptop bags acme designer slimAcme makes laptop bags only, and most of their designs are sleek, with prints that remind me a lot of Kate Spade. Their Designer Slim bag is almost a sleeve, holding nothing but your laptop. It's ultra-minimal design allows you to put your laptop in another bag, but it also comes with a shoulder strap for you to carry by itself. ($149.99 - $174.99 based on size and fabric.)

laptop bag komen milanoThe Croc look is always uber-Exec, but this Milano bag from Mobile Edge ignores boring black and brown for pink. The bag looks much less like a laptop carrying case and more like a handbag. It comes in bright pink in honor of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, so 10% of sales from this bag benefit a cause. Like any designer of laptop bags for ladies knows, there's also a small matching detachable wristlet for cosmetics. ($129.99)

laptop bag - mango tango stripe

Mango Tango's line of bags is as cute as the name. While they do have a few bags that are all-over pink, this canvas bag has a less obtrusive stripe down the center. ($39..99 from Mango Tango's site, on sale at eBags for 20% off.)
