We recently caught up with Liz, the designer behind popomomo, an eco-friendly clothing line based in Los Angeles. This green line of tops and dresses gets its name from post-postmodernism, and it features fun, versatile pieces made from sustainable bamboo, soy and organic cotton jersey, as well as many recycled pieces.

Dress of the Day: Chameleon Dress II

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

Chameleon Dress II by Isadora ClothingI'm so hopelessly in love with this dress by Isadora Clothing. It's called the Chameleon Dress II, and it's one of the most amazingly versatile pieces of clothing I've ever seen. It can be worn in a variety of different ways, including with sleeves or without, strapless, or even as a skirt.

It's a one-size fits most dress, so it's the kind of thing that your best friends will definitely try to "borrow" from you all of the time. This dress can be customized, but generally it's available in a super comfy rayon/poly jersey material and comes in colors like spring green, military blue, black, plum, charcoal and bright teal blue.

Think you'll never be able to figure out how to wear it all of the many ways seen here? Never fear, because when you order, you also get a DVD which gives you instructions on 7 different ways to wear this dress. I'm resisting temptation for now, but I can't help but think that the $145 price tag really isn't much of a splurge considering how truly versatile this dress is. Get your own at Isadora Clothing.

Dress of the Day: Signette Jersey Boat Neck Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

signette jersey boat neck dress
The stretch jersey boat neck dress from Signette might not be completely appropriate for late January with its short flippy little kimono sleeves. However, with its vintage-inspired styling, the dress would be perfectly fine under a swingy cape or a short, cropped coat. The dress is made of black knit jersey and features banding at both the hem and the boat neckline that has felt applique flowers. Pleats gather together at the empire waist.

The dress is available from Bluefly for $165 (40% off from $275!).

CUT-IT-OUT Jersey Collection by Yelena Konovalova

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

I'm really intrigued by the bold, graphic prints of CUT-IT-OUT, a collection of jersey clothing and accessories created by Russian-born designer Yelena Konovalova. Yelena grew up studying art in St. Petersburg before moving to New York to immerse herself in the world of fashion design, first as a student at Parsons and later as Design Director for Catherine Malandrino.

The women's long sleeve Man Woman Man shirt is my favorite piece from the new collection, which features innovative cotton jersey clothing for both men and women. These are not your average t-shirts. Yelena created these single color designs through a process of cutting and folding paper ... although these pieces are probably much more intricate and interesting than those paper snowflakes you made in elementary school. The current lighthearted collection of limited edition pieces was inspired by Russian folk art and pagan fairytales. These would be the perfect comfy yet stylish clothes to spend your weekend daydreaming away in.

Prices range from $30-$120. Available at CUT-IT-OUT.net and Smashing Darling.

Dress of the Day: Beau Soleil Beau Wrap Dress

beau soleil wrap dressLauren told us last week that one of the trends for 2008 will be "green," so we're picking eco-friendly Beau Soleil's Beau Wrap Dress today.

The jersey fabric is made of 100% bamboo, a highly sustainable material. The scoop neck, rushing at shoulders and smocking on the back make this an easy, comfortable everyday dress. The dress features a leather wrap belt that ties in the front, but the thing we like best is the on-seam pockets.

Available from Shopbop for $185.50 (on sale from $290).

Dress of the Day: Sweet Pea Pleated Jersey

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

sweet pea cobalt jersey dressYes, it is official. This fall season, the jersey minidress has replaced the shirtdress as my functional fashion in my wardrobe. I used to wear shirtdresses all the time to work because they had a professional look with a collar, but still let me feel like a lady because it's a dress.

Professional-looking though it may be, the shirtdress is uncomfortable with it's stiff materials and the fear of popping a button in an embarrassing place. I sit in a chair all day. When I'm at work, I grind. I need to be comfortable, and since wearing a tracksuit to work isn't really an option, I'm sticking with jersey dresses, like the Pleated Jersey Scoopneck Dress by Sweet Pea. Though it's a minidress, the long sleeves are fit for the season. The pleating and lack of waistline make it an easy wear for sitting at a desk for 12 hours straight. It also comes in black.

Available from Bluefly for $54.

Dress of the Day: Fighting Eel Dress Jazz

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

fighting eel dress jazzMaybe it's the weather. Maybe it's the stress at work. Whatever it is, I am all about dressing comfortably these days. However, dressing comfortably doesn't mean I want to show up at the office in flip-flops, sweatpants, and a hoodie.

Dress Jazz by Fighting Eel is comfort all-around, made from a stretchy, soft jersey fabric. The gentle scoop neckline is neither too low nor too high, and the sheared princess yoke gives the bustline a flattering shape. The most attractive feature (to me) of course, is the on-seam pockets. The hemline is a little high, but that's nothing a great pair of tights under a kicky pair of knee high boots can't fix.

The dress is available from Active Endeavors for $145 in both red and black.

Dress of the Day: Romeo & Juliet Violet Jersey Mini Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

romeo & juliet couture violet minidressIs it just me or dis it feel like a sauna on the equator of Hell yesterday? Yes, it was hot, humid, and I was cranky as you-don't-want-to-know.

When it's that hot, all I want to do is run around naked, but since I also don't want to get arrested, a little minidress will have to do. Romeo & Juliet Couture's Violet Minidress almost looks like a swimsuit. The front has a deep scoop with a bustline that's pinched in the center and lets out into a ruffled skirt. The back is a raceback.

The dress originally retailed for $110, but is available from Bluefly for $66. (Today, Bluefly has an additional 15% off their already marked down prices on dresses.)

Dress of the Day: BCBGirls "Brianna" Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

bcbgirls jersey dressI am not quite sure how I feel about the floor-length dresses that are all the rage this season. As much as I love dresses, and even floor-length gowns for evening, a long dress during the day seems heavy, restricting, and uncomfortable to move around in.

But not if the dress is made of lightweight, breathable jersey, like this Grecian-style jersey dress from BCBGirls. The dress comes in light jade, has a flattering V-neck with feminine ruffle trim, and summery spaghetti straps. The most comfortable part of this, of course, is that it has an empire waist and ruching at the bust. The hem falls 40" from the natural waistline, just long enough to be long, but with a little room to show off a fabulous pair of gold or silver sandals.

Available frm Bluefly for (only) $48!

Dress of the Day: Split Back Mini Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

rachel pally split back mini dressSaturday? Oh, honey, we are going out tonight! And we're not going just anywhere -- we're going there. Yes, there. That means you can't rely on a reliable standard outfit. You can't go with just any ol' outfit. You need to put on your A-game, and nothing says "Champion" than the Split Back Mini Dress by Rachel Pally.

The Split Back Mini Dress is made of a super soft black jersey that is 92% modal cotton and 8% Spandex to give you that fitted stretch. There's pleating at the back, and the sexiest feature of this dress that makes oh-so-Saturday-night is the split back. The dress is sleeveless and falls 32" so don't wear this baby out if you're feeling shy. My choice of acessories? What else? Sky high patent leather black stiletto heels and a teeny tiny black patent clutch. All gold-metal jewelry, naturally.

Rachel Pally's Black Split Back Mini Dress is available from Pink Mascara for $190.

Dress of the Day: Printed Matte Jersey Wrap Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

laundry by shelli segal wrap jerseyI don't know about you but after two NFL Championship games back-to-back yesterday, I am exhausted. I couldn't even think about the work week, let alone plan what to wear. Thank goodness for dresses, which require the least amount of effort to "outfit."

The Printed Matte Jersey Wrap Dress by Laundry by Shelli Segal is made from a soft, stretchy polyester and spandex blend that forgives your waistline for all those nachos and pizza you ate watching the games yesterday. The dress pulls on over head, opens into a V-neckline, and falls about 39" through a loose, fluid skirt. The waist is cinched with a tie, which more for hiding the bumps there than actually holding the dress closed. Long sleeves are shirred and gather at the cuff.

The dress is $205 at Nordstrom.

Dress of the Day: Chloe Jersey Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

chloe jersey babydoll dressIt's the last day of the week that we're going to worry about that abdomen of ours before we really get serious about those 100 crunches every day. No, seriously, we are going to get serious about working out now. For real.

But today, we're slipping into Chloe's eggshell-colored, fine jersey babydoll dress. The dress is sleeveless with a rcrew-neck, has pleating on bust and below the high waist-line that is wrapped with self-tie black cummerbund. You don't have to worry about its light color as the dress has a white lining underneath. Falling just above the knee, the dress is made for a pair of knee high boots.

Chloe Babydoll Dress available from Net-a-Porter, originally $925, now $555.

Whatever Style: Biker chic

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Whatever Style

Cycling has had its share of scandals over the years, the most recent being the massive doping ring uncovered in Spain and the resulting 15 riders excluded from the 2006 Tour de France, including pre-race favorites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso.

The bad news: its clearly possible to dope in cycling

The good news: its also possible to be dope in cycling. Here's an Everything Style primer to biker chic:

  1. Bike shorts: They may not be flattering at first, but you will come to love them. And unlike many consumer goods, more expensive really is better. Think about what the padding protects. Then think Assos, Castelli and Giordana.
  2. Bike helmets: Freedom is not the wind running through your hair. Freedom is the wind running through your hair safely. But don't worry -- helmets like the Bell Sweep and the Giro Atmos go a long way towards simultaneously keeping you cool and making you cool.
  3. Bike visors: Nothing says "bike dork" like a detachable visor. Except maybe a detachable helmet mirror.
  4. Helmet mirrors: See above.
  5. Bike shoes: Unlike regular shoes, you don't have to choose between comfort and style. Unfortunately, you do have to choose between multi-use (read: mountain bike shoes -- thanks to a recessed cleat, you can click into your pedals but still saunter along the boardwalk) and single-use (read: road bike shoes -- absolutely not for walking, but absolutely fast). DMT, Sidi and Shimano make great kicks.
  6. Jerseys: Yes, they have zippers. Yes, they have back pockets. But they are infinitely better than t-shirts. Trust me on this one.
  7. Gloves: Though you may want to go au naturel, gloves -- like helmets -- are worth their weight in gold. And they can very easily be stylish. Louis Garneau, Pearl Izumi and Nike make especially smooth gloves.

So in summary, my aspiring Greg Lemonds: Don't dope. Be dope.
