Born in Detroit will be the name of the upcoming John Varvatos radio show on SIRIUS XM Radio. And, unless you count Isaac Mizrahi's guest stints on Martha Stewart Living Radio, this is the first time a top designer has hosted his own radio show. So, we know he can sew. But can he talk?

John Varvatos Rocks Melrose Ave

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

I know John Varvatos for his Converse and resurrecting American style, but the side of John Varvatos that has really touched many lives is what he does for the Stuart House, a rape treatment center at the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. It's a sensitive topic, but the Stuart House helps the special needs of child victims of sexual abuse and their families.

Who Really Dressed Jeremy Piven at the Golden Globes?

Filed under: Men, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Jeremy Piven adjusts his tie on the red carpetAlthough award show men's attire is almost invariably dull and homogenized, it still plays a role in the important art of score-keeping between competing designers. So, what happens when two designers can't agree on who dressed an A-lister at the Golden Globes? That's what happened with Jeremy Piven's wardrobe at Sunday's awards. John Varvatos and Domenico Vacca both took credit for Piven's suit via press releases from their PR departments. So, who really designed it?

Jesse Metcalfe opens John Varvatos Store at Fred Segal

John Varvatos USA brings Los Angeles part of CBGB at the Fred Segal Santa Monica store. By gutting an old bricked room in the flagship department store (where the clothing normally serves as the decor), and putting floor to ceiling concert posters and woofers, Varvatos has established himself as the standard in men's apparel with no hint of modesty.

The store features original concert promo posters and record covers from American Rock N' Roll greats like Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Bruce Springsteen and Joan Jett, as well as a Red, White and blue Harmony acoustic guitar.

Oh yeah, clothes also fill the walls of the room.

Jesse Metcalfe came out to shop and mingle. He arrived in John Varvatos and left with bags of the new Fall collection. He played a little guitar in the shop. Who knew he was so multi-talented?

Converse by John Varvatos fall 2008 campaign

Filed under: Style in the News

Fall 2008's "Get Chucked" campaign for Converse by John Varvatos was shot by Ryan McGinley and features model Daisy Lowe. McGinley is known for artistic innovations like employing paper plates (shown above) and casting nude subjects in groups.

At least there's no boomer era musicians in this Varvatos chapter. But ad campaign and iconography aside, Converse by John Varvatos gets stronger as it progresses each season. The vintage and rocker styles are legit and the price is way more accessible than John Varvatos Collection. Plus the audience is much, much younger than Varvatos usually cares to dress. Available nationwide at department stores, it's the quality and affordable apparel line that Converse fans have always deserved.

As a complete collection for men and women of trousers, dresses, skirts, blouses, button downs, jacket, blazer, knits, footwear and more, Converse by John Varvatos should be considered just a small step down from Marc by Marc Jacobs. It's all about updated basics with great details. And even if there's not the high end, luxe fabrics of his own collection, Varvatos provides clever and straight forward design direction to the clothes.

Daisy Lowe stars in new Converse by John Varvatos campaign

After keeping it casual and understated in Doc Martens' ad campaigns for the past couple of seasons, Daisy Lowe aka Gavin Rossdale's lovechild, has found a new shoe company to play with: Converse.

The British "it" girl stars alongside some slightly dirty male model in the new Converse by John Varvatos ad campaign. Wearing lots of black eyeliner and using a French fry as a mustache, Mark Ronson's boo looks laid back and in her element in the Ryan McGinley lensed photographs.

In addition to the ads that will run in magazines like Vogue,Interview, and GQ, there will be a sixty second film that depicts the models in the ad causing mayhem inside of a diner. But we know they probably do that a lot in real life, so this shouldn't have been too hard for them to reenact.

CBGB's is now a John Varvatos menswear boutique

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

On Monday, CBGB's died one last time and was reborn as a pricey John Varvatos menswear boutique.

Hmmm. I'm thinking $130 tshirts are totally not punk. On the other hand, Varvatos has pretty good rock and roll connections, and 315 Bowery had to get bought by someone, right?
