Reebok Launches a Pop Up Store in NYC - For a Limited Time Only

Reebok pumps retroAs part of their attempt to launch themselves back out of their longtime fashion irrelevance, Reebok has opened a temporary 'pop-up store' in Manhattan named "Flash" -- how appropriate. The insta-store, only open for one month, is located at 169 Bowery and will be Reebok's outlet for top secret, limited edition styles that not even the savviest of sneaker insider has ever laid eyes on. Is Reebok actually onto something here?

Hennessy launches a luxury sneaker - things that have nothing to do with cognac

A few months ago, LVMH announces that they're getting into yachts. Now the luxury conglomerate is launching limited edition Hennessy sneakers in collaboration with Jhung Yuro. Go figure. The cognac-inspired kicks will go live Dec. 1st exclusively at JhungYuro.com, and they're sure to be the envy of anyone who has an appreciation for the finer points of luxury sneaker design. If such a person exists.

This St. Patrick's Day, ward off pinches with green kicks

Filed under: Holiday Style, Accessories, Shoes

I painfully remember the year I forgot to wear green on St. Patrick's Day. I was in junior high, and it was miserable -- my maiden name was Green, so I thought maybe I'd get away without getting pinched, but no such luck. I came home with little red marks all over, and decided I would never go a St. Patty's without getting festive again.

However, I don't like wearing a bright green shirt or anything like that on the actual day -- I never like to dress just like everyone else -- so I look for shamrock-hued accents to serve my purpose. And, what better accent is there than brightly colored shoes?

I love these by Puma -- they actually have a lucky pot of gold included. But, if you're pretty sure you'll get lucky anyway, you might want to opt for some different kicks that better suit your style. Check out the gallery for some Irish inspiration! But hurry -- the pinching begins March 17!

Enter by Friday to win a pair of AJXX3 sneakers

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Men, Contests & Giveaways

I'm sure there are a number of you who have read about the 23rd installment of the Nike Air Jordan basketball shoe and are bummed that you didn't get your hands on a pair because:

a) you don't live near one of the 23 retailers who got the initial batch in January;

b)
you're ballin' days are over, so if you're spending $200 on a pair of shoes, they'll go with a suit; or

c) ever since Michael Jordan did the whole, "I'm retired! I play baseball! No, wait, I'm still a basketball player!" thing, you just don't want to be like Mike anymore.

At any rate, I have good news: reachnyc.com is holding a contest so you can win a pair of this kicks. The bad news? It ends tomorrow. But, it's easy to enter -- visit the website, answer the three questions, make sure you can wear a size 10.5, and you're golden.

Why should you want these shoes, other than the fact that they're the hot new sneaker on the market? You might be interested to know that Nike implemented environmentally-friendly technology in the making of these shoes by using interlocking panels instead of toxic glue. This update required a great deal of new machinery, so since Nike has made that investment already, I'm hoping they'll continue to go a little greener with some other shoes. Hey, a girl can dream!

Limited edition kicks not so limited

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting piece on the rise, and perhaps fall, of limited edition sneakers. Even those of us who might not be fans of limited edition kicks have been aware of the frenzy (if only by watching Turtle's quest for rare sneakers on Entourage).

But the days of frenzy may be on the wane due to oversaturation of the market. Vans, for example, is releasing 70 kinds of limited-edition sneakers this spring and Nike seems to bring out a new edition every time a designer sneezes. The result of the flowering of the limited edition market means that the sneakers are bringing less money on the resale market. This is especially true with newer runs of "limited editions" where the limited amount can run into the thousands.

For hard core collectors this is changing the thrill of the hunt where rarity was part of the attraction. Some have switched to smaller companies and niche brands while some are just becoming less interested in obsessive collecting. It's a classic tale, find out what the customer wants and then give them far too much of it.
