Origami Inspiration from the Oscars

Filed under: Red Carpet Trends, Get the Look

dior

Fashion has long been influenced by Asian tradition and every few years we see a resurgence of geisha-esque looks which usually start on an haute couture level and take a few years to trickle down. For instance, does anyone remember John Galliano's spring 2007 collection for Christian Dior? Well, in case you don't recall, it was chock full of crazy kimonos, bright colors, and fierce origami folds which finally, in 2009, has caught on with celebs. So how can you wear the origami look that has been so prevalent on runways and red carpets the last two years?

Dress of the Day: Vivienne Tam Kimono Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

vivienne tam kimono dressI have to admit, I have been a little unfair in my daily pick of a dress. I have knowingly excluded a certain type of dress, and not just once. I'm not exactly sure what it is about the dress or why I am so exclusive, since I have never even worn one.

But today is the day I let the Kimono Dress into the club. I still won't wear one, but that shouldn't stop anyone else from slipping into the 100% silk brown and tan floral print kimono dress by Vivienne Tam. I think I am okay with this dress because the print is far more subtle than the bright red and pink cherry blossom prints I'm used to seeing. The dress features solid black satin trim on the short sleeves, empire waist, and the deep V-neckline. Perfect for matching black shoes -- I am thinking you should definitely stay away from white tube socks and flipflops on this one.

The Kimono print dress is on sale at Neiman Marcus for $244.

Wear a little kimono on your finger

kimono ringsYou might love the masterful artistry and gorgeous look of Japanese kimonos, but it's probably not very practical to wear a kimono. I can't imagine that they're all the comfortable, and I do know that they are quite expensive. However, you can still have the look of the hand-dyed fabrics with Kimono Rings.

The Kimono Ring is a piece of Kimono fabric encased in acrylic. The rings reaches just over a half-inch high in the center and is open in the back (to allow for flexible sizing). The rings are $16USD, available from The Carrot Box, which also has some beautiful carves plastic and lucite rings.

Kimono on your jeans

wahoojin kimono print jeansEven though the news is that jeans and denim might be officially over, it'll take a long time, if it happens at all, before jeans disappear from our wardrobes.

So perhaps what we'll do instead of buying more and more pairs of jeans that look almost exactly the same (a guy frind of mine marvels at not only how many pairs of jeans I have, but how they all seem to look exactly the same -- to him), is to find cool and new things to do to them -- like paint on them!

Wahoojin Denim is a jeans manufacturer based out of Japan and have just launched in the US (www.wahoojin-usa.com). Another jeans company? That's nothing new, but Wahoojin paints gorgeous kimono-style designs on their denim; 1000+ designs with everything from cherry blossoms (pictured) to samurai warriors. Though it isn't clear from the website how much the jeans are or where to buy Wahoojin Denim (the orders have to be placed over the phone or email), I'm sure they'll be turning up in boutiques soon.

My favorite desin, of course, is the dragon.

Plus-size wrap dress

Do you love the look of Diane Von Furstenberg's wrap dress but can't quite handle the price tag? L8ER has an affordable and smashing wrap-style kimono dress for plus-sizes available over at Macy's.

Popular wisdom might tell you that patterns aren't wise for larger women, but the well-proportioned a-line shape makes this dress a flattering and striking option. I have to say that I'm particularly fond of the red sash and the kimono style sleeves. At $58, you can have all the cache of a DVF wrap dress without the hefty price tag.

Dress of the Day: Velvet Torch Kimono Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

velvet torch kimono dressNormally, I am not a fan of the kimono-style in dresses and tops. I don't know if I just harbor some weird bitterness toward the dress that I associate with geishas, or that they're just really irksome to wear when you're trying to work because those damn sleeves get in the way of typing.

However, with a short-sleeve style, at least the annoyance of the floppy sleeves isn't there anymore. The Velvet Torch Kimono dress, available at Nordstrom for $58 looks easy enough to wear by itself with a little tank, but since it's getting cold outside, it could be really cute with an ultra-thin, ultra-tight, longsleeve t-shirt underneath. The dress comes in black cotton, or in a polyester with a tone-on-tone dotted print. Toss on a pair of tights underneath and you're set. Just don't wear socks with flip flops.
