Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Baby Phat/KLS

SHOW: Baby Phat/KLS Collection
MAKEUP: James Kaliardos, Key Artist for MAC
HAIR: Odile Gilbert
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: First Lady glam

THE SCOOP: Baby Phat's Fall 2009 collection was inspired by the strength, tenacity and beauty of the American woman, and who better represents that woman than Michelle Obama. And the hair and makeup was just as classic as our First Lady.

Celebrity hairstylist Odile Gilbert described the look she created as "big, beautiful, and Baby Phat!" Long curly extensions were added to the models' hair, teased, cut, and curled to mimic Michelle's famous medium-length coif.

James Kaliardos drew inspiration from Michelle's "classic, soft, pretty look" but "bumped it up a little bit" to stay true to the essence of Baby Phat. For Kaliardos, it was all about sculpting to create a contoured face. The makeup artist used a nude sculpting foundation and applied nude shadows horizontally into the eye crease to add definition. Eyelids were topped with a pinkish-gold for some sparkle and cheeks were peach, pink or fuchsia (depending on the model's complexion). Individual lashes were applied to make them "feathery, light, and open" and the top lashes were stroked in a black mascara. To complete the look, Kaliardos used a creamy lip gloss with a pale pink sheen. "Some people are actually afraid to use a pale color on dark skin, but it looks really fresh," he said. "As long as its not too white or gray then a darker skinned girl can get away with a pale lip."

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: MAC Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation; MAC Pro Beauty Powder/Loose in Drizzle Gold; MAC Eyeshadow in Soba; MAC Pro LipGlass in Partial to Pink; and Mac Pro Zoom Lash Mascarain Zoom Black.

JCPenny launches a new junior's line, we're not excited

Filed under: Style in the News

It's no secret that J.C. Penney wants to be like Macy's.

And since J.C. Penney can't tap celebrities like Usher, Mariah Carey, and Carlos Santana to promote its adult-centered store merchandise, they've aimed their targets at a more impressionable audience. That's right, people. We're talking about the bright young things.

Translation: The tweens, teens, and young adults alike.

Kimora Lee Simmons line to be sold exclusively at JC Penney

Filed under: Style in the News

Kimora Lee Simmons is going to be debuting her line exclusively at JC Penney this month. For such a diva, we're a little surprised that she would agree to sell her clothes at a store that's not necessarily considered high end. But maybe she's realized that there's a whole market outside couture that she hasn't yet tapped into.

Kimora considers turning her doggy into a diamond

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrities with Style

As I've stated before, I loveLOVELOVE dogs. I really do. But, when my Yuki goes on the great squirrel hunt in the sky, I don't intend to wear her as a sweater, to stuff her a la Rowdy on Scrubs, and I'm not sure I'd want to turn her into a diamond.

But Kimora Lee Simmons has a different opinion. Her 18-year-old pooch, Zoe, recently passed away, and she's looking for a way to memorialize her. And, what is better than a bitchin' diamond?

LifeGem is a company that turns the ashes of loved ones into gems -- I'd actually heard of this before, but with humans, not pets. But, if Kimora chooses this route, she can opt for a blue, colorless, red, green, or yellow diamond and get just about any size she wants (depending on how much of the remains she can provide). The smallest options start at under $3,000 for a yellow diamond and progress steadily upward, but you know price is no object for Kimora.

Now you can buy your child a Kimora Lee Simmons doll

Filed under: Style in the News

If you've always dreamed of inspiring your little girl to want to look like a tramp fashionista, today is the day that dream will come true. Toys R-Us is now selling a Baby Phat Kimora Lee Simmons doll.

The doll, created by Kimora herself, will set you back a whopping $59.99! Now, I haven't been on a Barbie shopping spree in quite some time, but that sounds pretty pricey to me. But apparently, it's worth it. According to the manufacturer, plastic Miss Simmons comes dressed in, "a pink halter with Kimora's KLS logo buckle belt, mini skirt and over-the-knee boots, topped by full-length faux chinchilla coat with KLS logo leopard-print lining."

Oh, and I should note, this doll is brought to us via Mattel, original creators of impossible body standards for woman. Is it any surprise that a company that thought selling Barbies with humanly unattainable proportions (36-18-33) was a good idea, doesn't think twice about encouraging little girls to wear fur and hooker boots? I should give them some credit. The Toys R Us website does specify that the toy is for ages 14 and up. But, we all know that for a little girl, anything down the Barbie aisle is fair game.

If you are an Ice Kitty, wear this watch

babyphat ice kitty watch braceletBabyPhat calls it a "bracelet," but we know a watch when we see one, and this one is perfect for the diamond diva. Well, at least for the crystalline couturista.

The Ice Kitty Bracelet (watch) is has a round case, and just for our vanity, has a mirrored dial with the Baby Phat kitty logo set in crystals. Of course, the most fabulous thing about this "ice" is that there are tiny floating crystals inside the dial - when they move around, they definitely sparkle.

The BabyPhat Ice Kitty bracelet is $150, available from the BabyPhat website.

Fashion Week Pick of the Show: Baby Phat

Filed under: Runway Trends, Handbags, Events: On the Scene, Accessories, Clothing

baby phat spring 2007I'd never want to diss on any collection because most certainly, there is someone out there who absolutely loved it, but I just can't be all that lovey-gushy about Kimora Lee Simmons' Baby Phat Spring 2007 Collection. Not only did it look suspiciously like a short sleeved, cropped version of Fall, but the gals looked like the sibling result of an urban orgy involving Carmen Miranda (jungle leaves), Nelly (grillz), and Mr. T (mohawks). No offense to Mr. T, of course.

However, in the spirit of Picking one from the Show, I will have to go with the fairly conservative-for-KLS look on the right, pairing a silvery grey top and dark cropped pants covered with flap-pockets. It's a little bit un-exciting for Spring, but at least you know you could wear it and not get kicked off the sidewalk for exposure, over, indecent, or otherwise.

Then again, I might just be drawn to the handbag.
