Karen Allen was very busy knitting, not thinking about Indiana Jones at all

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
is fun and action-packed. Total summertime fun. Plus, it brings back Karen Allen as the feisty Marion Ravenwood, our favorite heroine from the films. Are you aware that she has the best action figure of all time from the original film? Also, she's an innovative knitwear designer.

Karen went to FIT when she was 17, and returned in 2002 to study machine kitting technology. In 2003 she opened her own studio in Great Barrington, Massachusetts where she produces beautiful sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves and more, all made of Italian and Scottish cashmere.

Dr Who fans told by BBC: put your knitting needles away -- or else

Filed under: Style in the News

Knitters. Not a group of people one would traditionally associate with law-breaking hooligans, but it seems the BBC thinks differently.

You see, although the British TV company is grateful for the army of fans its top-rated sci-fi show Dr Who has spawned since it hit our screens (for the second time) in 2005, it's less happy that some of those fans have chosen to... knit their favorite characters.

The cheek! Imagine people actually using their creative self-expression in ways they choose, in a democratic society! Surely something can be done to stop them?

Fall style spotlight: knit hats and scarves by Mischa Lampert

Mischa Lampert Hat from ShopBopNormally, it would be pretty hard to think about winter hats when it's as hot as the dickens in Los Angeles right now. However, as I cruise through ShopBop.com, I am instantly starting to feel the chill.

The warm chunky knits of Mischa Lampert's hats and scarves are starting to make me want a snow storm. Alright, so perhaps that is a little extreme but as soon as one nip hits the air I am going to have one of these hats grace my beautiful skull.

All of Mischa's hats are hand-knit and made from 100% wool yarn -- for ultimate warmth and coziness. These hats capture the artsy-cool look at its finest and will definitely turn heads. Oh, and trust me, no one will ask if you made if yourself because this hat looks too good. At first glance I thought about dusting off my knitting needles and giving it a go, but who am I kidding?

The collection, sold on ShopBop.com, includes a variety of hats (the one pictured is my personal favorite) and scarves. Prices range from $143- $209.

Cratism: defacing public property with yarn and nitting needles

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Those Swedes are a crafty bunch. Instead of decorating the streets of Stockholm with graffiti art, they turned to illegal street knitting, or "craftism."

It all started with a guerrilla crafting group called Masquerade, who at first seem hell-bent on "tagging" all of Stockholm with these funky, colorful knitted bands, but have recently turned their needles on the entire world. A quick trip to their blog reveals their nefarious antics in LA, San Francisco -- even Indiana!

In addition to spreading joy by adding fuzzy spots of color to urban landscapes 'round the globe, these derelict crafters also like to embroider messages into the cloth seats of commuter trains -- like "kram," which translates as "hug."

So join the movement! Pick up some yarn, and stick it to the man -- with a knitting a needle!

Knit your own summer tee

If you're anything like me, you like to play around with various DIY methods to customize clothing. I usually don't go much further than printing on a shirt or age-ing old jeans with a cheese grater, but some of you might enjoy going all the way and even make the clothing from scratch. The Blue Blog has posted this great pattern for a simple knitted t-shirt. It sounds like the perfect summer t-shirt, flattering, but loose and air-y. I'm tempted to learn how to knit just to make this thing...

Knit your own unmentionables

As far as hobbies go, nothing is chicer than knitting and nothing is more timeless than sex. You can satisfy both of these impulses with the hand-knitted lingerie patterns from White Lies Designs.

Consider Lucy's Chemise nightie, a zesty variation on the ever-appealing wee nightgown. Because the pattern can be customized to your exact measurements, the chemise can be knitted to fit like a glove, not like an ill-fitting potato sack (yes, I mean you, Victoria's Secret!). The end result is a nightie that's feminine without being fussy and sexy without being tacky.

If you're so inspired, White Lies Designs also sells patterns for fishnet tights, thongs, tap pants and camisoles.

So for all you knitting Nellies out there, ask yourself: does your boyfriend/husband really need another scarf?

I didn't think so...

Beware of the sweater curse!

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Clothing

With celebrities like Julia Roberts, Madonna and Russell Crowe getting down with the knit'n'purl, the age old fiber art of knitting has become the hippest way to pass the time while you generate loads of unwanted scarves for friends and family.

But knitting isn't quite as wholesome as your dear old Grannie would have thought. In addition to the bizarre phenomenon of dominatrix-inspired knitting books, the needled hobby also has a rather unusual curse. The so-called sweater curse states that if you lovingly knit a sweater for your significant other, they will break up with you!

Knitters tell me that the sweater curse has a one-in-ten rate of occurrence, but I can't really say if I believe any of this curse-business -- my knitting skills never passed the excessively long scarf period.

She's a Juul

suzanne juul eternityYou may not have heard of her.

Unless you're big into knitting.

She's Suzanne Juul, a woman who knits one, purls two, and makes a scarf into eternity -- a single loop scarf that twists like the symbol for eternity ($160). She originally started with ponchos and the like, but has created dresses and cute knit tube tops for her Spring 2007 collection. Her products have been worn by Julia Roberts, Madonna, and Marisa Tomei. Mary Kate Olsen has also been spotted all over New York City wearing the eternity scarf, but we wont' hold that against Juul.

You can buy Suzanne Juul's knits from her website, or in select stores.

Knitting needles echo fall fashion trend

bella blue needlesAnimal prints, like skulls have become one of the major design themes for fall. Now you can even have knitting needles in a leopard print. Bella Blue makes these birch needles with gold finials and a black maribou boa. The needles are given a special sleek finish so that the wool glides over them. There are also crochet hooks in the same print. The knitting needles have a list price of $38 and were recently included in gift bags for celebrities during the August television awards season.
