Avril Lavigne is Launching Kid's Clothing Line - Yes, There Will Be Skulls

Filed under: Style in the News

Avril Lavigne is expanding her punk princess empire.

Last year, her juniors line, Abbey Dawn, hit Kohl's stores. And, People reports that in two weeks a new demographic will have the opportunity to don Lavigne's skull-covered clothes -- little girls.

The children's line will take Lavigne's rock-and-roll style and make it a bit more cuddly. Skulls will be "friendly" and leggings will be comfy. The singer has even found herself wishing she could fit into some of the pieces herself, particularly a zebra-print hoodie (with ears).

That's not the only thing Lavigne has been working on -- she has also created a new fragrance called "Black Star," which, according to People, the singer describes as "me in a bottle." Um, okay.

In addition to being "Avril," the fragrance ingredients include pink hibiscus, black plum and dark chocolate. And yes, that sounds much more appealing to us, too. Get yours this fall!

Last time people were abuzz about Britney Spears (yesterday!), it was regarding the singer's curvier, post-vacation body upon resuming her "Circus" tour.

But any possible weight issues aren't dimming this star's power: Candie's announced today (July 7) that Britney is returning as its candy girl!

For its Fall campaign, Candie's outfitted Spears for her upcoming "Radar" music video which was shot in conjunction with the Candie's commercial. We have a sneak peek at the collaboration below!

Spears wears Candie's jeans, dresses and accessories in the video, while teasing a handsome polo player, who eventually gets caught in her "radar."

All the pieces will be offered exclusively at Kohl's department stores and prices will be refreshingly affordable: $28 - $58 for clothes, and $10 - $70 for shoes and other accessories.

Wearing her favorite piece from the collection: a black lace minidress (of course!), Spears says "Candie's fits into my life in such a huge way. My sister loves Candie's, my Mom loves Candie's. We love the shoes, bras, underwear, everything, it's a lot of fun!"

Caution, Your Tony Hawk Pajamas Might Burst into Flames

Filed under: Men, Kids and Babies

The bottom of a Tony Hawk skateboard circa 1990It's not often that we worry about flammability when it comes to our clothing unless we are a.) working as a fire fighter, or b.) working as an arsonist -- but apparently Tony Hawk's latest round of boy's pajamas have been recalled because they're not up to safety standards. If you or your child have been enjoying Tony Hawk sleepwear styles such as "Stix Jester," "Boards Estate," "Backspray", or our favorite "Heathen Skull," be advised -- you're hazardously flammable.

Esteé lauder and Wal-Mart make nice - strange times

Filed under: Style in the News, Fragrance

(Can they really go cheap? Click the photo to see some shockingly expensive designer products)

As the world of fashion reacts to the tanking economy, some high-end players are making bold new compromises partnerships in order to break into a recession-friendly lower price point. For example, in an attempt to scoop up some consumers that will be broke bargain shopping for the foreseeable future (like us), Esteé Lauder will be launching a trio of fragrances exclusively at the fashion hub that is Wal-Mart.

The new line will be sold under the name C-Thru, as in the bottles are transparent -- or as in 'wow, the economy must really suck for Esteé Lauder to make such a transparent attempt to reach out to Wal-Mart shoppers.' While the move is totally uncharacteristic for the historically highbrow cosmetics firm, launching a Wal-Mart line is probably one of their best chances to grow in these tough times.

The C-Thru trio will consist of gem-inspired fragrances like Ruby, Purple Diamond, and Blue Opal. After their exclusive launch at Wal-Mart this December, EL's low-end fragrances will eventually be sold at other luxury stores such as Kohl's and Target. Weird.

Avril Lavigne hates, er, loves her new clothing collection

We don't get Avril Lavigne. She's bashing Christina Aguilera one day and rocking Xtina's platinum blonde hair extensions the next. But more curiously, we don't understand why she thinks anyone would be willing to dress like her.

When Hot Topic isn't punk rawk enough

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Department store chain Kohl's has just signed Avril Lavigne to develop a new line for Juniors called "Abbey Dawn", Women's Wear Daily reports. The line will be in stores just in time for Back-To-School (Oh thank God!!!!). The line will feature jewelry and clothing, with more products to come, and pieces will range from $24-48. WWD says we can expect "authentic rock 'n' roll attitude with a feminine edge," which is a concept SO new and different that no one else has thought of it. Ever.

Please, people. Avril has ridiculous style without professional help, and not in a cool M.I.A. way. In an Elton John way. In a Bjork-as-a-swan way. Designers need to be designers, rock stars need to be rock stars and rarely the twain shall meet.

Simply a great deal by Vera Wang

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Steals and Deals

This past week I have been temporarily transplanted from my life in LA to a life in the suburbs of Washington DC. It's just a temporary holiday transplant, but a transplant all the same. You would think since I am only out here for a week that I could keep myself from shopping. Well, obviously you don't know me that well because I can find shopping bliss in any location.

My latest bit of bliss was found in the most unexpected place, Kohls. I hit the suburban superstore with my Mother and got lucky with the Simply Vera by Vera Wang department. The pieces were fashionable, affordable, and well made. I tried on just about every piece in the collection and found that they fit true to size and in a few cases they fit a bit larger than usual.

I picked up a few tops, a sweater, and the greatest find was a pair of stacked heel leather boots. Head to your nearest Kohls to check out the line (which is currently on sale) or go to Kohls.com.

How global warming is changing fashion

EarthIf you follow the fashion industry at all, you know that designers release their new collections according to seasons -- Fall '07, Spring '08, etc. Makes sense, right? You need a different wardrobe in April than you do in November. However, according to this article in the Wall Street Journal, the days when people swapped out their wardrobes with every change of season may be long gone.

Liz Claiborne Inc, Target, Kohls and JC Penny are all following the trend -- shifting the way they sell clothes, so they have items on the rack that customers need "month to month, instead of season to season."

So what gives?

Apparently part of the reason is that these days, we spend so much time inside that there's no longer a need for the kind of big, bulky clothing our parents used to keep warm during the colder months. But the primary reason for this growing shift away from conventional season-to-season design is said to be something more...fundamental.

In short, it's due to climate change. According to Radley Horton, Columbia University climatologist, "There are less extreme differences between seasons." In fact, Spring comes 7 to 10 days earlier than it used to, fall is a week later than it was in decades past, and the months in between are growing milder -- meaning, that the chore of overhauling your wardrobe ever 3-4 months is quickly becoming unnecessary.

Who knows, maybe this means you don't have to stop wearing white just because Labor Day has come and gone.

Elle designs for Kohls. Yuck!

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Steals and Deals

How did this one slip past me? While being caught up in the swirl of having every celebrity on the planet designing their own clothing line, I guess I didn't even notice that magazines had followed suit. Elle magazine has a collection at Kohls! Oh gees, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

Why on earth did anyone think that was a good idea? Anyone who reads Elle doesn't shop at Kohls. Soccer moms shop at Kohls to get their kids back to school outfits, they aren't going into Kohls to get real fashion. And people looking for real fashion certainly aren't stepping their Manolo covered toes into Kohls.

Elle, was Target all booked up for the season so you thought the next best thing was Kohls? Why are you designing clothing anyway? You are a fashion magazine, remember? You write about clothes and show them off on too thin models. I am so disappointed in you. I really am. You were my favorite fashion magazine and now I feel like you cheated on me with the trashy girl up the street. I didn't know you were the type to go against all you believe in for a few measly dollars. You know good and well you wouldn't be caught dead in a $27 dress. Just like you know you don't promote size 18, which is the highest size your cheap clothes go up to.

My head hurts.
