Book Review: "Edward Steichen In High Fashion"

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Product Reviews

Students of photography know that some of the most stunning examples of the craft come from advertising work. Edward Steichen In High Fashion is literally a beautiful illustration of this truth.

Although Steichen might not exactly be a household name, his subjects were. In his distinguished career, which included 15 years as the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, he snapped stars like Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Gloria Swanson and Charlie Chaplin.

Tip of the day: Kirna Zabete boutique now online

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Famous, funky, favorite Soho lifestyle boutique Kirna Zabete has opened up shop online. Now you can scope out the goods from designer to décor from the comfort of home. Just think, all that money you'll save on your plane ticket to New York can be spent on high end designer duds like Lanvin, Alexander Wang, Giambattista Valli, Nina Ricci and Thakoon. Plus dogs, babies, and beginners are all welcome to the online boutique.

And as the Kirna Zabete saying goes, you'll "leave looking lovely." *sigh* We love this place.

I want that! Rachel Bilson's entire look

Its official – Rachel Bilson just knows how to pick 'em. At the 2008 Teen Choice Awards in LA, the actress chose a turquoise Brian Reyes asymmetrical, one-shouldered dress (do we smell a trend brewing here with Blake and Rach?). It was fun and flirty – absolutely aces for this event.

Not to name drop but she accessorized with some of our personal favs – Lanvin sandals, a Marni clutch, and Amrapali gems. Gorg! After this, we just cannot wait for this girl's line with DKNY to come out!

• Brian Reyes dress, Brian Reyes.com, Priced upon request

• Marni clutch, Marni, $1,960

• Lanvin multi strap sandals, Barney's, $320

• Amrapali earrings, Amrapali Outlet's, Priced upon request

Lanvin Fall '08

Filed under: Style in the News

Lanvin's Fall '08 collection rocked the runway yesterday showing us clothes that are one hundred percent made for the cold season. The colors were dark and somber, mostly greys, blacks and some navy blues, with no bright splashes thrown in at all. I was getting depressed just looking at the runway until I remembered that we're not even through Spring/Summer yet! There will be plenty of time to be depressed later on in the year.

Other things that really stood out in Lanvin's collection, designed by Israeli born Albert Elbaz, were the chunky necklaces. All accessories were big and bold. Many were done in gold, which has been a big accent color this season.

Of his designs, Albert said, "Part of a designer's job is to be pragmatic. Not to be ashamed to think about making life easy for a woman."

So many designers are quick to make fashionable art -- that's totally unwearable for the real woman. But Albert's clothes are wearable and gorgeous. Some of the clothes in his collection could be worn on the red carpet or even to a very fashionable business meeting.

My only point of contention was the makeup. All the models wore thick liquid eyeliner, a la Amy Winehouse. This, in turn, gave them a glossy, dazed and confused look. Or maybe there was a bit too much partying going on behind the scenes. Either way, as Tyra would say, these models were all suffering from a severe case of "dead eyes."

Shoes that could double as weapons: cone heels

Pointy cone heels aren't a new idea, but until now they've been more of a novelty item than a common sight. But prepare for an invasion of the super-pointy cones this summer!

There's just something about having your legs appear to be growing out of two ice cream cones that makes a girl feel sexy. But if you're going to wear these, please be careful. I don't care how good you look, if you step on your date's foot with one of these things while you're dancing, it's not going to be pretty.

The platform, cone heel Lanvin sandals shown above are available from Browns for about $900.00 (and sadly no, that doesn't include liability insurance.)
