Make a style statement with your laptop bag

We are SO over the basic, black laptop bag. With as much time as we spend picking out our clothes, shoes, jewelry, and purses, it just doesn't suit us to settle for a boring bag of any sort, especially when it's something that carries one of our most treasured possessions!

Father's Day Gift Guide: for the new father

There's nothing more manly than becoming a father -- it's something that a woman technically cannot do. Still, most of the paraphernalia that comes along with the manhood's highest honor is far from being flattering to one's masculinity, but times they are a changing. Somebody somewhere had the good sense to start marketing dad-friendly diaper bags, and some of them are actually cool enough to be mistaken for a murse, laptop bag, or holdall.

We were totally impressed when we ran across this skull and iron cross-emblazoned diaper bag made by a company called DadGear. Sure, it costs $79.99 -- but you can't put a price tag on the male ego. If you're not the skull and iron cross type, you can tone it down with a Diaper Dude bag from Target. It's a little cheaper and doesn't put off that I'm trying too hard to be a cool dad vibe.

Mugged for your man purse

Those of us who take our work with us wherever we go are forever indebted to the inventor of the man purse -- or "man bag," if you feel the need to butch it up. However, recent research suggests that your murse is likely to get you mugged.

According to researchers, this is because thieves know that guys carry expensive stuff in the man bags (laptops, cameras, etc) -- making them a more appealing target than women, who more often use their purses only as fashion accessories.

I'm a mess without my murse, so this is a serious dilemma. Hopefully this news will prompt designers to incorporate security features into new bags -- but if not, I suggest mouse traps. You'll know they're in there, so you probably won't catch yourself, and any mugger who breaks his finger trying to grab your laptop will think twice before he tries it again.

Betsey Johnson goes geek

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News

Betseyville by Betsey Johnson 'Betsey Motif' Laptop Case
Laptops are a part of our everyday lives, more addictive than television and handier than a clunky PC. Where else can you read the newspaper, check in on gossip, shop, watch videos, listen to music, date... the only thing you can't do online is eat. So its no wonder laptop cases are stepping up, it is no longer acceptable to tote around your laptop in a bulky black carrier (and why would you want to?)

The choices are endless and if on the off chance you can't find an interesting computer bag or you simply can't find one at a reasonable price then a good solution is the laptop sleeve. The sleeve allows you to tote around your laptop in your most stylish handbag. Brands like Juicy Couture and stores like Target carry an array of attractive sleeves at semi-reasonable prices. Out of all of those, the most thrifty and attractive sleeve goes to Betsey Johnson. Weighing in at a measly $35 you can protect your Mac Book with a fashionable, padded rose print sleeve, fully equipped with a velcro closure pocket on the inside.

After all -- if you are going to geek out do it in style....runway style.

If you fancy winning a vintage laptop bag

plastic peopleSeveral months ago, I made a list of laptop bags that went beyond the boring black ballistic nylon that blends in with everyone else. One of the bags was from Plastic People, a line of bags designed by Shannon South, who uses vintage vinyl. Her bags are absolutely adorable, and totally appropriate today, the day of all think pink and heart. I mean really, how do you not talk about bags that are called "Supreme Love Story" today?

Plastic People is actually giving away one of the laptop bags to a random winner. My favorite, naturally, is the pink bag with white trim and heart, but don't worry, not all of Plastic People's bags are pink. Just head over to this contest page, to find out how to enter and win one of the bags, which is valued at about $175.

Liven up your laptop case

Living in a city full of young working men and women who love to work on-the-go, I'm constantly observing the way these folks carry all their necessities, and more specifically, their laptops.

The latest style is to be a bit more casual with a messenger bag, while some stick with the usual black or brown briefcase, which is common for both genders. And there are even some who throw their portable workstations into a standard backpack (way too risky, I'd say!). Aren't these traditional options functional? Yes. So, what's the problem, Nic?

They're boring! It's time to spice it up, per se. I did a little browsing and found a few options that I'm looking into myself. Kolobags is a company that sells all sorts of bags "for men and women with style," but their notebook cases are what we're after. This bag I recommend for the guys -- with a "faux croc" black material, it looks sleek and is definitely functional. And for the girls, this Kipling bag -- it's suntan and black, neutral but uncommon colors for this type of bag; it's got tons of pockets, and more importantly comes with a Kipling monkey key chain.

If you just can't stand being a little more adventurous, then I suggest the plain but highly regarded bags over at LowePro.
