Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Product Reviews

We're not ashamed to admit it -- we have a slight lip balm addiction. We have tubes and tubs in all our purses, and we can't go to sleep at night without one last fix.

By now, we've gotten picky -- we like products that go on smoothly without being gloppy, and while a bit of flavor is a bonus, we don't want it to be too strong. Keeping all these things in mind, we've found a new love -- Naturally Upper Canada's Cranberry Moro Orange Lip Butter.

Urban Decay's ring holds your perfect shade of poison

When I saw this lip gloss ring, I thought to myself, "Wow! It's just like a more grown-up version of Hard Candy's old crappy plastic rings!"

Well, it looks like Urban Decay has found a better -- a much better -- way to do make-up jewelery. It's so deliciously macabre, and a fantastic change from the old glittery lip color in 25 cent plastic jewelry. I love the skull detailing and how it looks beautiful enough to hide the fact that it's really a goofy lip gloss ring.

The Poison Ring is available for a limited time at $50 and comes with three great shades of gloss, so get on this goodness!

Are you a Chapstick addict?

The phrase "I am totally addicted to X" is not uncommon in the beauty industry. In these instances, what people usually mean by addiction isn't real addiction -- it's addiction as in "I love it so much I can't stop buying it."

Putting these hyperboles aside, there are number of people I know (myself included) who claim to have an addiction to lip balm. And by addiction we mean chemically dependent in that 12-step program sort of way.

Seriously, I can't leave the house without some kind of lip moisturizer. And it isn't just about vanity -- my pout doesn't produce its own moisture anymore! Anytime I forget to put something on my lips, I end up paying for it with a painfully cracked mouth.

I only know one person who has beat the addiction, and that was by sheer crazy willpower. So I was wondering, do you know anybody with a lip balm addiction? Have they ever tried to give it up?

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Smith's Rosebud Salve

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Steals and Deals

rosebud salveqIf the fashion forecasters are right and the era of the enormous handbag is coming to a close, then you might have to rethink that veritable cosmetics counter you are carrying around in your purse.

If you have to do some space budgeting and are restricted to a few essentials, make sure that Smith's Rosebud Salve from Bigelow Chemists is one of the keepers. The salve is most commonly used as a lip balm, but I happen to have fairly dry skin, and dab the stuff on dry patches on my face and even on my hands. Sure, it has a floral fragrance, which is something I normally don't like, especially on my lips, where the idea of "eating" flowers grosses me out, but the rose scent is pretty light, and after a while, I don't notice it.

Rosebud Salve is about $6.

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Vitamin E Stick

Filed under: Cosmetics, Steals and Deals

mimi maternity vitamin e stickSo it's not quite "drugstore," but at $3 a pop, the Mimi Maternity Vitamin E Stick is affordable enough to put it in the "Drugstore Beauty Queen" category. I'm not pregnant, nowhere near, in fact, but I swiped this lovely little lip balm from my sister back when she was pregnant. The Vitamin E stick is meant to be a powerful moisturizer for pregnant women who are faced with drying skin and all those other lovely things that happen to hair and skin when a growing baby is sucking your body dry of nutrients. Because it comes in a lipstick tube, you'd naturally put it on your lips, but let me tell you, if you have dry skin and fine wrinkles, you can glide this across your face anywhere. I put it under my lipgloss, at the corners of my eyes and mouth. It is awesome awesome awesome.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find it anywhere online, even from the Mimi Maternity Store, but I am guessing that you could walk into any Mimi store and find them near the registers.

Lip balm replaces fortune cookies

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics

At my normal choice of restaurants, the farewell gift from the server is either a cheap breathmint or a fortune cookie (which I love, mind you).

But awhile back at the Blue Pointe restaurant in Atlanta, I experienced something different -- either my server thought I had terribly chapped lips or he just thought he should give something back after such an expensive meal.

The restaurant gives every patron a 0.5 ounce tube of Kiehl's Lip Balm #1, which, according to my server, is the new "cool" lip moisturizer.

The sample-size tube retails for $5.50 on Kiehl's website. I'm not sure, but I think my lips looked and felt just a little bit cooler using a lip balm from a trendy restaurant.
