Filed under: Cosmetics, Interviews, Green Fashion, Must Haves

Are you as worried as we are lately about what you put on your skin, including your face and lips? So were the ladies who founded Primitive Makeup, an all natural line of lipsticks and other makeup free of the toxins often found in many drugstore brands. (Just check out all of the harmful chemicals found in many leading brands, which have been linked to cancer and other illnesses.) We chatted recently with Primitive founding partners Susanna Ronner and Nancy Caigan to find out more about how they're working to offer a safer alternative.

DuWop Cosmetics gives us the glow we love

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style for a Cause, Product Reviews

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DuWop Cosmetics let us try out their BCA products (which you might have already seen here). They sent us a sample of their Limited Edition Liplingo Pink lip palette ($32) as well as their Limited Edition Pink Shimmer Brick ($18), both of which come in a sleeve bearing the names of women who have been affected by breast cancer.

First, let's talk lips. We are not generally big fans of lipstick -- we lean more toward the glosses. But, this lip palette is different -- the lipstick itself is a really natural shade of pink, plus, it's super moisturizing. Even better are the shimmery glosses that go over it. They feel fabulous and add just the right amount of dewiness and shimmer (not to mention flexibility) -- not too young or sparkly, just fun.

The Shimmer Brick also qualifies as fun -- it's really subtle, so you don't need to worry about looking like you're heading to a rave or anything. It works well as a highlighter on the cheek and brow, or the collarbone. Or, when used all over our face, it gave us a dewy look and helped to even out our skin tone.

Black lip gloss: from the runway to real life

Fall is a great time to try out darker shades of nail polish, eyeshadow, and lip color. But how dark is too dark? Yves Saint Laurent sent black-as-night lips down the runway during its fall fashion show, and the company will offer the signature shade for sale next month. (You can pre-order a tube of "Pur Black" here for $28.)

But though it may come as a surprise, you don't have to be an avant-garde fashionista to work this look. Even mainstream cosmetic companies, like Lancome, are in on the trend. Lancome's ink-black "Piha" gloss will go on sale, as part of a set, in November. Unlike the YSL version, Lancome's is glittery, and meant to be layered over the red lipstick that it is sold with.

So while matte, black lipstick is still a fashion miss, these high-shine black glosses don't have to be. Aaron May, Lancôme's new artistic director, even suggests using "Piha" as a vampy liquid eyeshadow, which seems like a winning way to make this trend more glam than goth.

Stila review: Lip glaze

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

First of all, we are huge fans of lip gloss -- it's seriously one of the easiest ways to make yourself look just a little more put together at the last minute. Stila's lip glaze is a best seller, and they call it "an essential addition to any beauty bag."

Tip of the day: Cosmetic lifespans

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Many of us gals have been the victim of expired cosmetics. Here's the scenario. After seeing pics of that smokin' gloss we used to wear in high school, we rush to our beauty closet only to open the tube to a rank stank that we don't understand. Most beauty products do not have any smell, or if they do, it is very faint. If you start noticing some product BO, it's because that favorite gloss is dying a slow, bacteria-invested death in that dark, tightly sealed tube. Once the product has peaked, it can cause some pretty gross irritations or infections if used. To avoid all of the above, follow these general toss time guidelines.

The siren call of Hannah Montana lip gloss

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

It happened again.

We stopped at Walgreens to grab a bottle of water on the way to gym, and promised ourselves: No browsing hair, make up or nail polish. And we were thisclose to success, but the register-side Hannah Montana lip gloss display snared us.

Two fruity flavors! Tangerine and strawberry! Cute roll-on applicators! Less than five dollars! Sold!

Not having a tween in the house, we're a bit late to the whole HM game. A little research turned up a surprising selection of branded lip glosses, with some spectacular applicator accessories.

Check out our "faves" in the gallery, but beware: no one can resist the lure of Hannah Montana!

The Daria Collection

Last year, supermodel Daria Werbowy signed a major contract with Lancome cosmetics. If that wasn't enough, the beauty company asked Daria to create a limited-edition three-piece makeup collection.

The Daria collection will be sold exclusively at Sephora stores starting sometime this month and will consist of a Color Fever lipstick in Beige Caracai ($26); Lipgloss in Nude Prainha ($24), and Color Design Eyeshadow Quad in Carnet de Velours ($42).

Hourglass lip shine is shine without the glitter

hourglass shine glossWhen you first take a look at this tube of lip-gloss the only thing you see is glitter. Your immediate reaction probably goes something like this: "Whoa! I am not in the seventh grade anymore get that stuff away from me." You must ignore that inner dialog because this is probably the most fantastic lip-gloss you will ever use.

When you apply it, you don't even see the glitter that was in the tube on your lips. It's like a lip-gloss miracle; the only thing you see is shine. The shine or "extreme sheen" isn't obnoxious and plastic looking like MAC's lip glass (gosh I remember my college days of overdosing on that stuff). The sheen you get is a wet shine that looks sexy and polished.

Another great thing about this gloss is the fact that it isn't sticky like some of those other lip-glosses. The texture is creamy and soft, just beware you will be tempted to continuously rub your lips together which can result in a loss of gloss. So apply, pout and look hot - no rubbing - and you will be just fine

Benefit yourself with beauty

california kissin lip shine benefitI have always looked, but never touched Benefit products. I think it is because their products are too smart for me; they always go a step above the obvious. For example, instead of having blush, they have this nifty stuff that comes with a tiny paintbrush called Benetint (I hear it's incredible but it just scares the heck out of me).

When I was introduced to a new product called California Kissin' Lip Shine, I knew there was more than meets the eye. Benefit making an ordinary lip gloss? Pasha! This is a smile-brightening lip shine that claims to "give you a radiantly bright smile and minty-fresh breath."

You are probably wondering what is in this stuff to make your teeth look whiter. The secret is in the tint; the gloss has an aqua blue sheen which gives the illusion of having whiter teeth. You can wear the gloss alone or with your favorite lip color.

There is definitely something to this claim – ever hear someone tell you that red lipstick makes your teeth whiter? It is the blue hue in the red that is doing that. If it is whiter eyes that you are after try Benefit's blue mascara which also enhances the color of your eyes.

I have tried both products; the blue mascara really does make your eyes pop. As for the blue gloss, I am not seeing miracles with the teeth (I already have pearly white teeth) but the breath? Smashing darling.

Luscious lips

Luscious Lips

I am not a lipstick girl, I wish I were but I'm not. Lipstick takes far too much effort; you have to apply it right the first time, use lip liner, re-apply, and hope you don't any on your teeth. To keep my lips looking pretty and to keep me from going insane I opt for lip gloss and chap stick to keep my lips in check.

For a low maintenance look: I just glide on a little bit of Burt's Bee chapstick. If you haven't picked up a tube of this magical lip potion you are crazy. Available at any drugstore, grocery store, and some beauty stores; this stuff with change your life; the tingle lets you know it's working.

For heavy conditioning: I recently gave BORBA's Cashmere Fiber Lip Kix (yes with an 'x') and I have to say I love it. It conditions without feeling medicated. The tube of gloss has a very light vanilla almond scent to it and goes on smooth and buttery, as opposed to thick and greasy.

To shine on: Remember the days of MAC lip glass? It basically took a medicine dropper to apply that thick glycerin like gloss. Your lips may have looked glossy and sexy like in the magazines but trust me no boys enjoyed locking lips with that goopy mess. Go for something lighter, cheaper, and food flavored like Lip Smackers gloss in vanilla frosting. Best part is this is sold at your local drugstore for around $3.

Add some color: You can achieve a luscious lip color without going all crazy with the lipstick. Try Smashbox for a lip gloss that will give you the illusion of having fuller lips and gives you color that will last for hours.

Lipstick light lets you apply in the dark

I'm not sure how often most women find themselves stuck in the dark and desperate to apply some lip gloss, but -- just in case that ever happens -- ModelCo has a new product just for you: the Lip Light.

The only difference between this and normal lip gloss is that there's a small LED light hidden in the lid, so it shines on your lips while you're applying. Novel, sure, but probably not all that useful outside of your favorite dimly-lit nightclub. Even then -- how hard is to find your mouth?

That said, the little light might come in handy for other things, like digging through your purse, or, um ... Ok, so I can't think of anything else you'd use this for. But it's lip gloss -- and it lights up!

Urban Decay's ring holds your perfect shade of poison

Poison RingWhen I saw this lip gloss ring, I thought to myself, "Wow! It's just like a more grown-up version of Hard Candy's old crappy plastic rings!"

Well, it looks like Urban Decay has found a better -- a much better -- way to do make-up jewelery. It's so deliciously macabre, and a fantastic change from the old glittery lip color in 25 cent plastic jewelry. I love the skull detailing and how it looks beautiful enough to hide the fact that it's really a goofy lip gloss ring.

The Poison Ring is available for a limited time at $50 and comes with three great shades of gloss, so get on this goodness!
