(Just check out all of the harmful chemicals found in many leading brands, which have been linked to cancer and other illnesses.) We chatted recently with Primitive founding partners Susanna Ronner and Nancy Caigan to find out more about how they're working to offer a safer alternative.

Even though we totally fell in love with Lisa Rinna when she was on Dancing With The Stars, we've always categorized her in the same "Muppet Features School of Plastic Surgery" as Donatella Versace and Jessica Simpson.

Tip of the day: How to avoid summer makeup meltdown

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Most of us love the summertime – the sun, the beach, the warmth, the runny makeup... okay, so maybe we don't love all of it. When the weather is hot and you're sweating your face off literally, it is time to readjust your makeup routine so you don't look like a hot mess for the next three months.

Tip of the day: Cosmetic lifespans

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Many of us gals have been the victim of expired cosmetics. Here's the scenario. After seeing pics of that smokin' gloss we used to wear in high school, we rush to our beauty closet only to open the tube to a rank stank that we don't understand. Most beauty products do not have any smell, or if they do, it is very faint. If you start noticing some product BO, it's because that favorite gloss is dying a slow, bacteria-invested death in that dark, tightly sealed tube. Once the product has peaked, it can cause some pretty gross irritations or infections if used. To avoid all of the above, follow these general toss time guidelines.

There are new products for those of us who aren't brave enough go under the knife (and according to StyleList, some of the actually work!). But, if you're a celebrity, new lip glosses promising to make your lips look juicy and luscious aren't enough. All kinds of A-listers are hitting up their plastic surgeons for a hit of collagen.

Jewels of the Smile

Do you hate sharing your soda? Does it disgust you when someone wants to borrow your lip balm? Your problems are over! Introducing the latest in cold sore chic, the rhinestone lip bling.

Sure, everyone wants to be healthy, but looking healthy is so passé. Plaster these babies on your lips and never be bothered again. For added effect we suggest a sock in the eye and Goldschlager tears. No longer will you live in fear of jerks eyeballing your YooHoo (or your drink).

Seriously, what in the world could motivate someone into going the lip bling route? Granted, we can think of one legit reason to add traction to one's lips, but we can't write about it on this site.

Stylelist is running a poll over at their site today on this very issue. They probably won't say that someone rubbed the model's face in Pop Rocks, but they'll say something, and then you'll vote. It's the American way.

Keep smiling!

Drugstore Beauty Queen: BeFine Lip Serum

The BeFine company, which was founded by a 64-year-old Massachusetts grandmother has been doing big business rather quickly. Florence Sender expects $20 million in first-year sales from the Be Fine Food Skin Care line. The 12 products contain 181 natural ingredients and are available at CVS. I've been curious about these products for a while and I finally succumbed to temptation this week, picking up the lip serum, which contains chamomile, beets and palm peptides.

BeFine's lip serum gets high marks from me for the smooth glide of the product. It feels great on and makes the lips feel very soft. Unlike a lip gloss it has a tendency to sink in, causing me to wish for a reapply. Two problems with that, the first is that the product is expensive (around $20), the second is that the pump container is not exactly portable. Which brings me to the packaging. This product seems over-packaged to me. It comes in a box which is larger than it needs to be, the bottle is far bigger than the amount of product it contains and the packaging has a huge and mostly useless bottle cap.

The product says it delivers a "ultra sheer tint" but I didn't find much of a tint. It did however make my lips feel plumped up and full. I love the product and the all-natural ingredients, I just wish the packaging were more eco-friendly.

Have you exfoliated your lips lately?

Don't forget, your lips need exfoliating too! We often think about exfoliating as something we need to do to the tougher skin on our legs, elbows and back, but lips need a good exfoliating too every once in a while. By exfoliating your lips, you can help avoid that uneven, clumpy lipstick look that we all dread. But wait - don't you even look at that loofah! The delicate skin of your lips needs a much more gentle exfoliation.

My favorite product for lip exfoliating is Tx lips by Leaf and Rusher. Their formula not only exfoliates, but also moisturizes and plumps lips too. You can find Tx Lips for $20 through the Leaf and Rusher website, and also by using their store locator to find a retailer that carries the brand near you.

SexySmile, the best idea since chocolate and peanut butter got together?

We all know a smile has two main components: soft sexy lips and white teeth. Most lip gloss products just focus on the first half of that equation, but a new product is meant to work on both your lips and your teeth. SexySmile, by celebrity dentist Dr. Pia Lieb, is a lip gloss that also has a teeth whitener. One end is a sponge-tipped lip gloss and the other end is a brush to apply clear whitening gel. According to Dr. Lieb's website, the whitener can be used up to six times per day and can both immediately fix a new stain as well as provide gradual whitening over time. There are seven colors of sparkly gloss and three shades of lip balm (including clear) which sell for $28.50 each.

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Anything like Lancome's Juicy Tube, but not

lancome juicy tubeThere was a period in my life when I wore Lancome's Juicy Tube lipgloss like underwear. Basically, all the time, except when...well you know what I mean. The thing is, for something like lipgloss, which goes very fast, spending $17 on it every time started to put a huge drain on my beauty budget.

Enter: the drugstore knock-off. I am now addicted to these things the way I'm addicted to the Mimi Maternity Vitamin E stick, and thankfully, they all run about $5 a pop. Almost every drugstore cosmetics brand has a version of the super slick and shiny ligloss that squeezes out of a tube. Maybelline makes Shinylicious, L'oreal has Colour Juice, and Cover Girl makes a new sheer Smoothwear Liptint in a tube. Of course, I'm not really saving much when my logic is now I can buy three different colors with the same amount of money!
