The Leading Lipstick Indicator is up 40%. Uh-oh.

Beauty industry insiders believe that sales go up when the economy goes down. The theory is that people turn to less extravagant indulgences (like say, lipstick) when they're uncertain about the future. Leonard Lauder coined a name for this phenomenon after lipstick sales doubled after Sept. 11 - the Leading Lipstick Indicator - and while the name is a bit tongue in cheek, the correlation between cosmetics sale and economic woes seems to be strong.

The bad news? Cosmetic sales are up 40%.

The good news? We found a list of fall's most popular shades. We're sure you'll find a little something to spoil yourself with on this list.

Filed under: Cosmetics, Interviews, Green Fashion, Must Haves

Are you as worried as we are lately about what you put on your skin, including your face and lips? So were the ladies who founded Primitive Makeup, an all natural line of lipsticks and other makeup free of the toxins often found in many drugstore brands. (Just check out all of the harmful chemicals found in many leading brands, which have been linked to cancer and other illnesses.) We chatted recently with Primitive founding partners Susanna Ronner and Nancy Caigan to find out more about how they're working to offer a safer alternative.

We love big bags, but the down side is all the digging you have to do to find your phone or iPod or keys. Most bags just don't have a good sized pocket that gives you easy access. Posse Pouch to the rescue!

Cosmoholic liquid lipstick without the sticky

We used to be so torn when it came to lip color.

With lip gloss, you have shiny smiles, good! But sticky lips, bad! Precise application with the wand, good! Having to reapply over and over just to get some color, bad!

DuWop Cosmetics gives us the glow we love

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style for a Cause, Product Reviews

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DuWop Cosmetics let us try out their BCA products (which you might have already seen here). They sent us a sample of their Limited Edition Liplingo Pink lip palette ($32) as well as their Limited Edition Pink Shimmer Brick ($18), both of which come in a sleeve bearing the names of women who have been affected by breast cancer.

First, let's talk lips. We are not generally big fans of lipstick -- we lean more toward the glosses. But, this lip palette is different -- the lipstick itself is a really natural shade of pink, plus, it's super moisturizing. Even better are the shimmery glosses that go over it. They feel fabulous and add just the right amount of dewiness and shimmer (not to mention flexibility) -- not too young or sparkly, just fun.

The Shimmer Brick also qualifies as fun -- it's really subtle, so you don't need to worry about looking like you're heading to a rave or anything. It works well as a highlighter on the cheek and brow, or the collarbone. Or, when used all over our face, it gave us a dewy look and helped to even out our skin tone.

Kate Moss' lipstick self-portrait finally sells

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Weird art and Kate Moss seem to go together like supermodels and Diet Coke. We already told you about the golden crotch-shot statue (currently on display at the British Museum), and now we've got something just as unusual, if not worth quite as much -- a self-portrait of the supermodel, drawn in lipstick.

Actually, it's kind of fitting that a model would use makeup as her medium, now that we think about it. Kate drew the portrait while still with her mess of a man, Pete Doherty. Apparently Pete sold the portrait, which he inscribed with "Who needs blood when you've got lipstick?" after the break up, and now that buyer has sold it privately for £33,600.

Sarah Palin wigs!

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Get the Look, Hair Cut and Style

Now is your chance to put lipstick on a wig (but it's still a wig)! The Sarah Palin wigs and hairstyles are here- finally (McCain's hairstyle will be here soon enough, stupid male pattern baldness). Wigs not recommended for Pit Bulls.

The wigs were no trouble, no trouble at all- in fact they were already in stock. No they weren't leftover Tina Fey costumes (see glasses), but they did have a famous face attached to them.

Would you believe Raquel Welsh?

WigSalon is marketing their Raquel Welsh style wigs as a great Sarah Palin alternative. "Simply bobby pin back the upper layers of the Raquel Welch's new Valentine wig style, which is truly beautiful in it's [sic] own right, and let the longer layers fall freely."

Tina Fey morphes into Sarah Palin on SNL: "I can see Russie from my house."

Filed under: Style in the News

When people aren't talking about Sarah Palin's lack of knowledge on foreign policy issues, her attempt to ban certain books from the library, her seventeen-year-old daughter's pregnancy, her failed attempts to build the "bridge to nowhere", oh yeah, and something about pitbulls and lipstick, they like to lament on the fact that the Alaskan Governor looks like she could double as Tina Fey's Republican twin.

Well, last night Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live to play her doppelganger for the premiere episode of the show's new season. The sketch was hilarious, to say the least, and well worth the sleepy eyes we had to fight off to watch it in its entirety. In this clip, watch as Sarah, er, Tina and Amy Poehler who takes on the Hilary Clinton character open the show. Enjoy.

I want that! Lindsay Price in Brian Atwood

Lindsay Price was looking like pure perfection at the Tide and Downy Total Care party in NYC. She paired her white Andrew Gn dress with a pair of purple Brian Atwood sandals. We love how this girl makes anything she puts on look fresh and youthful.

Also, after spotting Lindsay and Whitney Port (from The Hills) in lavender hued kicks, we're thinking this calls for a trend alert!

Anyhoo, can't wait to check her and the rest of the girl's on Lipstick Jungle in a few weeks. Even if you aren't a fan of the book or show, the fashion alone should keep you tuned in!

Sarah Palin vs. a Pitbull with lipstick

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics, Beauty Tips

Last night, during her speech at the Republican National Convention, Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin introduced the concept of "Hockey Moms" to a nation that was somewhat unfamiliar with the phenomena.

Apparently, these ladies are a tough bunch. So tough that they are often confused with pitbulls! We took a look, and she's right. It is hard to tell the difference! (Zing!)

But don't worry. Sarah gave us an excellent rule of thumb for figuring out which one you're dealing with: the pitbulls don't wear lipstick. Usually.

Black lip gloss: from the runway to real life

Fall is a great time to try out darker shades of nail polish, eyeshadow, and lip color. But how dark is too dark? Yves Saint Laurent sent black-as-night lips down the runway during its fall fashion show, and the company will offer the signature shade for sale next month. (You can pre-order a tube of "Pur Black" here for $28.)

But though it may come as a surprise, you don't have to be an avant-garde fashionista to work this look. Even mainstream cosmetic companies, like Lancome, are in on the trend. Lancome's ink-black "Piha" gloss will go on sale, as part of a set, in November. Unlike the YSL version, Lancome's is glittery, and meant to be layered over the red lipstick that it is sold with.

So while matte, black lipstick is still a fashion miss, these high-shine black glosses don't have to be. Aaron May, Lancôme's new artistic director, even suggests using "Piha" as a vampy liquid eyeshadow, which seems like a winning way to make this trend more glam than goth.

Rock the Vote with Stilla

We've never needed an excuse to buy any new beauty products. But just in case you're a little more budget conscious than us, Stila's new lipstick not only will have your lips looking fresh, but will also play a role in the 2008 Presidential election.

Stila's new red lip color, Rock the Vote, goes on sale starting today and will retail for $17. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the first 500 lipsticks purchased will go to the efforts to "mobilize young people to get involved in the political process."

But that patriotism doesn't stop there folks. In addition to the lipstick, Stila will have a "Rock the Vote" icon on its site that will allow people to become registered voters so they can make that all-important decision on November 4th.
