Radley - Handbags that make us happy

Filed under: Handbags, Stores We Love, Accessories

As you've heard us say many times, we believe fashion should be fun. We want to wear things that make us smile; things that make us happy. Who wouldn't? And what's making us happy right now, you ask? Radley. Radley is making us positively giddy.

Limited edition Swarovski trunks for those who want to be hated

Samsonite plus SwarovskiEvery once in a while, a product so outrageously extravagant and loud comes out that it boggles the mind that anyone would purchase it, braving the fiery death glares that they will surely face from strangers. A team-up between Samsonite and Swarovski have come up with such a product... Behold, the Samsonite Black Label trunk, covered in crystals and -- get this -- only 30 are in existence. Now, this thing is massive, so there's no way to subtly flash it like it's darling diamond earrings hiding under your hair until you pull it up. This thing is immediately and absolutely in-your-face and begging to be kicked over and smashed in a jealous rampage.

Sean Connery is the new old face of Louis Vuitton

When Louis Vuitton first launched their Keith Richards "Core Values" ads, we thought that they might be trying to make a connection between leathery skin and their fine leather luggage. Now, we get it. With age comes retirement, retirees travel -- hence they might want to blow their pension on a piece of LV luggage. That, plus the fact that the latest installment of James Bond films is hitting theaters this fall, must explain why Louis Vuitton picked Sean Connery to be their latest spokesperson.

Just in time to coincide with the premiere of Quantum of Solace, Louis Vuitton will be banking on the original James Bond's old time good looks. Connery was recently voted one of the "50 Sexiest Men Over 50" by the ladies at WowOwoW.com. Hmm, we think he kinda looks like a hairy leprechaun, but he should dress up nice in the LV campaign. Because, according to WWD, Annie Leibovitz was behind the lens, and we all know that she can work some photo magic.

Traveling in style - High-end fashion luggage

We recently got a matching set of luggage. It's great -- it's red and easy to pick out when it comes out on the conveyor. Not the most stylish thing in the world, but it came with an enormous cosmetics case, so we're happy.

However, we started looking around at some of the seriously stylish luggage utilized by the rich and famous, and now we have bag envy. This Forbes article makes a really good point -- if you're carrying around expensive designer clothes, shouldn't you keep those clothes in a suitcase befitting them?

Duchovny dropped by Johnston & Murphy - hate to say it

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

(But wait, there's more! Click the photo to see which other sexed-up celebs might be addicted to doing the business)

We really hate to predict the demise of celebrities, especially ones that voluntarily check themselves into rehab without a court order. Even more so when it happens to be the star of a show that we were totally addicted to in middle school. Still, speaking of addiction, we have to gloat that we totally called this: David Duchovny's ads for Johnston & Murphy got pulled because having internet sex addicts represent your clothing and luggage brand is creepy. Sorry dude.

It's actually a real shame because the ads look great. The photos, snapped by Walter Chin, look sharp and compelling just like you'd expect for a Johnston & Murphy campaign. Duchovny looks super fashionable and alluring -- and that's the problem. After Duchovny's very public admission to a rehab institution for sex addiction/porn addiction or whatever it is, J&M realized that their great new ads might not be sending the signals that they want to send.

It sucks to have to kick a celebrity when they're down, but we imagine that he got to keep the money. That ought to help ease the pain. Best of luck to Dave in his quest to be sex-free, or whatever.

Check out our roundup of some of the best men's travel bags out there and save yourself from disorganization--or from paying $50 to check your over-sized, half-empty suitcase.

Globe Trotter in Junya Watanabe s/s 09

Filed under: Runway Trends, Handbags, Accessories

2008 has been a breakout year in the US for Globe Trotter. The 111 year old, British producer of hand made luggage only hit stateside in fall '06. This year, we've seen limited edition bags for Conran Shop and J. Crew.

This season, in Paris, Junya Wantanabe featured vintage Globe Trotter luggage in 12 of 48 looks from his s/s '09 runway show. Tim Blanks has a show review at Men.Style that explains the tie in to travel.

Karl Lagerfeld does luggage

Filed under: Style in the News

Much like Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld is completely unaware that our economy sucks, the dollars is fairly weak, and people aren't buying expensive booty like they use to.

But what's fashion without all of the craziness and extravagance? Boring, of course.

Keith Richards donates leather face to Louis Vuitton

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

In another weird advertising move from Louis Vuitton, they've decided to feature the wrinkled mug of none other than rock-god Keith Richards in the next wave of their "Core Values" campaign. Although I'm not sure his style is really suited for a LV, I do think the decision was a million times better than their goofy TV commercial. Not to mention, they put Annie Leibovitz behind the camera -- instant classic.

I have to agree with LV's head of communications, who said "I think when people are flipping through a magazine, this will stop them," -- yeah, that's why I clicked on it. My first thought was: WTF? Keith Richards in a hotel room playing his axe next to a piece of LV luggage? Or, I guess it's a custom guitar case.

It's cool to see that LV has enough of a sense of humor about their luxury brand to juxtapose it with a sloppy, burned-out rocker. Promoting super-expensive luggage as ironic fashion accessories is a hilarious idea. Unfortunately, I'm not into $3,000 jokes -- unless they're really funny. The photo in itself is a work of art, at least their money produced something worthwhile, whether or not it will actually sell any luggage.

Betsey Johnson bag helps you lose weight

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News

betsey johnson weekenderWith the New Year approaching I think it's safe to say that the majority of us have some resolutions to work on.

Let's face it, getting yourself inside a gym is hard enough and something extremely fashionable may be just the push you need. Forget about those lame duffle bags from the sporting goods store because this studded duffle bag from Betsey Johnson is much more attractive.

This black duffle gym bag was flying off the shelves at the Betsey Johnson boutique in Washington DC this past weekend. The original intention of this gorgeous bag is for jetting off to a luxurious weekend retreat but I have also found its makes the perfect gym bag. With enough room for your gym gear and a change of normal clothes, you would be a fool to carry anything less fabulous than this.

Purchase this bag online or in Betsey Johnson boutiques for $150, it comes in black and purple.

Hartmann luxe luggage

Like Samsonite's Black Label Vintage line, the Hartmann Luxe Collection harks back to the days when luggage had personality. Hartmann does their carry-ons and travelers in a wool/nylon blend fabric which is then trimmed in leather. The bags are sturdy and some of the pieces in the line have telescoping handles and wheels. The various pieces are available in apple green or sky blue, either one with brown polka dots. Prices start at $38 for a passport cover.

Alexander McQueen's sexy Samsonite

A while back over on Luxist we reported on the chic Samsonite Black Label line. Now Samsonite has partnered up with British fashion designer Alexander McQueen to create the Samsonite Black Label by Alexander McQueen. The collection includes bags with an elegant crocodile skin design and a wheeled case that rather creepily shows the imprint of a spine and rib cage. The pieces are lined with a feather print and come in black and bone. They will be available in stores February 2007.

Start thinking about travel with Vera Bradley

vera bradley java rolling bagWe've talked so much about the Holidays in terms of gift shopping and dressing for the full dancecard of Holiday parties we have, but we can't forget another huge aspect of the Holidays -- travel. Many of us will be jetting "back home," and other of us will be escaping, but whihever case it may be, we can certainly do it with style.

Vera Bradley is a line of accessories that specializes in bags made with printed cotton fabrics, making your travel pieces infinitely more interesting than the standard black ballistic nylon bags that seem to flood the baggae claim. Vera Bradley also has a collection of rolling bags in tote, duffel, and regular suitcase styles, which means that you won't have to worry about throwing out your back when carting your things around with you.

The bags are available online at the Vera Bradley website, and in select stores.

Flight 001 for the hip traveler

Filed under: Holiday Style, Handbags, Stores We Love, Accessories

jet set go carry on luggage from flight 001As much as air travel can be a pain these days, we still have to do it, especially with the Holidays coming up. Sure, there are size regulations here, liquid bans there, but there certainly aren't any limitations on style!

Flight 001 is a website that carries all kinds of cool products for travel, whether it's a rolling carry-on or cabin comforts, and the best part about the things they carry is that they go beyond the basic and boring. Most of the luggage and carry-on bags are colorful, which means you'll also be able to identify your bags out of a sea of black ballistic nylon. Even the types of things they carry are useful, yet hip -- a relaxation CD, an almost-like-Pucci printed sleeping mask, and a whole category called "Aerotherapy."
