Beth Ditto's Plus-Size Clothing Line for Evans Makes a Fashion Spalsh

Filed under: Style in the News

Kate Moss' slinky line for Topshop, Beth Ditto's plus-size line for Evans – what's the difference among fashion friends?

Not much gauging from the love-fest going on at the party for Ditto's collection, which drops this Thursday (July 9) at Evans, Topshop's plus-size sister store (which, delivers to the US, so yay!).

Moss, Ditto, their boss Sir Philip Greene and a host of skinny-mini fashion types were seen generating more excitement about double-digit sizes than I can remember in recent history. And I'm being literal here: Evans' definition of plus-size starts at size 14, which is actually a US 10, not exactly plus-size in my book.

But I'm not here to split hairs. It was actually just nice to see plus-size clothing not pitted in the center of some controversy, but rather cause for a party.

On a beauty note, check out Ditto's makeup: WOW! Does anyone else smell potential for a MAC contract? I know the company sends her makeup artist stuff for tours and appearances, but I've got a sixth sense about these things.

Fall Makeup is Channeling the 80s - In a Good Way

When MAC's Gordon Espinet talks, we listen. As the Vice President of Artistry at the cosmetics company, he is the trend maker when it comes to creating makeup looks for the fashion shows in NYC, Paris and Milan.

Espinet recently gave a preview of the trends to look for this fall (or now, if you want to get a jump start). "I drew inspiration from the late 70s/early 80s," he said. "But it's done in new and interesting ways." In other words, Espinet channeled the sexy 80s (think Debbie Harry) not the cheesy 80s (a la Boy George).

Check out these totally awesome trends, straight from the catwalk.

Today, our super special Total Beauty Guest Blogger is Christine Mielke, founder and editor-in-chief of Temptalia -- a go-to destination for the latest news, reviews, and how-tos on all your favorite beauty products. Here, she gives us advice on makeup brushes -- which are a magical mystery to many!

face brushes

Every beauty buff needs to have their fair share of quality brushes designed especially for the face; from blush to bronzer. Make sure you know your beauty brush basics and MAC Makeup basics before you head off on a spending spree -- it'll add up before you know it!

129 Powder/Blush Brush
($34.00) is your best bet for general blush application. Seriously, I'm constantly reaching for this brush whenever I go to apply colored blush. If you can only afford one face brush, this is the one I recommend getting first, because it can apply blush, highlighters, and do a little bit of buffing in a pinch. It's thick, dense, and deliciously soft on the skin. (And don't be fooled by the 129 in the brush sets -- it is not at all the same in regards to quality.)

Fergie Goes Brunette & Launches M.A.C's new shade of Viva Glam Lipstick

Brown Hair Flipbook

The most recent addition to the blonde-to-brunette club is Fergie. The singing diva traded her dark blonde locks for this seriously slick shade of chocolate brown, with mahogany highlights.

Sarah Jessica Parker was seen on strolling the New York City streets sporting tussled chocolate tresses. SJP may be enjoying her last few months of "normalcy" before rejoining her sassy gang to begin shooting part two of Sex and the City this summer.

What do you think of SJP's new look? Are you feeling the brown hair? Should she return to her iconic wavy gold strands?

Fergie is the most recent star to join the blonde-to-brunette club, trading her dark blonde locks for this super slick
shade of chocolate brown with mahogany highlights. We wonder if she's going back to her roots, or if the dark hue is a totally new 'do for queen Ferg's? What do you think - like it or hate it?

Regardless, brown locks look gorgeous paired with M.A.C's new Viva Glam VI Special Edition Lipstick in Lustre, a soft purple that's super flattering (I'm wearing it now - and believe me it is; purple normally looks hane on me!). Fergie is the Viva Glam spokesmodel, and she donned lavender feathers for the new ad campaign, pictured left. As per usual with M.A.C's Viva Glam campaign (it's now in it's 15th year!), every cent of the selling price of Viva Glam Lipsticks and Lipglasses is donated to the M.A.C Aids Fund to support men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS. 100% - that's huge. Warm fuzzies all around.

Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max that's set in Siberia – an ecclesiastic natural beauty

todd lynn face chartTHE SCOOP: There's nothing forgiving about skintight black leather pants, but they sure do look hot on models with impossibly skinny, long legs. Paired with body-skimming jackets and sky high Louboutins, London designer Todd Lynn's collection was certainly chic, if a bit grim in its austerity. Terry Barber's description of the makeup inspiration for the show followed suit: "Imagine Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max but set in Siberia – ecclesiastic natural beauty." Though that reference is a bit obscure, it's not lost on me as I look at the models' pale, matte skin, peach-rimmed eyes and grey-tinged lips. Grey lips are an emerging trend we've been seeing at both NY and London Fashion Week. It'll be interesting to see it this trend continues, or if it makes it off the runways and on to our lips.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP:
Barber brushed M·A·C Pro Loose Powder in Peach along the lower lashline and applied it over lids to set the concealer creating a "tired peach" lid. Next was M.A.C Pro Eye Pencil in Pale Yellow drawn into waterline and between lashes, which were combed through with Select Cover-up Concealer. Lip Conditioner blended with Eye Pencil in Ebony were applied to the lips in a thin, sheer layer.

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: High school cliques – are you a Siren, a Prep or a Goth?

THE SCOOP: Westwood's Red Label show hit on all her signature moves: tartan, corsets, décolletage, asymmetry and debauchery. The designs ran the gamut from loose knits to tight, tailored dresses and suits, so it's no wonder there were so many makeup looks to go with them. The venerable Gordon Espinet, makeup guru at M.A.C, explained that the looks were inspired by girls in different high school cliques. He certainly had his team working overtime to produce fierce eyes and lips-just not on the same girls.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at TIBI

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

SHOW: Tibi
MAKEUP: Makky for MAC
HAIR:
Kevin Ryan for Rsessions
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT:
Dr. Zhivago does 80's decadence

THE SCOOP: Inspired by the color-pop prints and peacock solids in Tibi's Fall 2009 line, Makky turned the makeup to a decade when optimism was king, and neon colors ruled. Yes, that would be the 80's. "The look is very Christy Turlington circa Vogue in the late 80's, said Makky. "When bright blue eye shadow was really in." To make the look very fresh and modern, and not too Barbie, he cut off the end of the eye color for a very graphic, square shape. The also hair echoed this optimistic outlook, though the link was a bit more subtle. "I was inspired by Dr. Zhivago," said hair stylist Kevin Ryan. "We're creating opulent hair that doesn't suit the environment. We're doing lots of gorgeous curls, that will then be brushed out and pulled back – so there's an underlying history of gorgeous. "

GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: Makky used MAC's new turquoise shade for fall, blended with true blue MAC Eye Shadow in Electric Eel on the top lid and squared off at the ends, with a cobalt blue shade beneath the lower lash lines. For concentrated color, use MAC Paint Pot in Painterly underneath. "It's a cream shadow that dries in a minute and really pops every color you put on top," says Makky. Lips were downplayed in MAC Hello Kitty Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Fish. "I love these because the balm texture allows you to wear trendy shades like pale pink without going crazy."

Fall 2009 Fashion Week - Backstage at Behnaz Sarafpour

Filed under: Cosmetics, Interviews, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

SHOW: Behnaz Sarafpour
MAKEUP: Gordon Espinet for MAC Cosmetics
HAIR:
Ashley Javier for Kérastase
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT:
Graphic liner and punky pompadours

THE SCOOP: Behnaz Sarafpour's Fall 2009 collection was inspired by the sculptor Alexander Calder, and the graphic hair and makeup followed suit. For makeup, the wire mobiles the artist is famous for translated into strong, black rimmed eyes. "I used eyeliner from every direction," said Gordon Espinet. By smudging the eyes with black liner and shadow, and leaving lips nude, the look was a little androgynous, a little punky, and played off the graphic clothing with natural ease. The futuristic pompadour that hair stylist Ashley Javier created topped off 80's era Grace Jones glam with a dash of Blade Runner cyberpunk. "In trendy neighborhoods like London's SOHO and New York's Williamsburg, I feel like women are adding more grandeur to their day wear. This squared-off bouffant adds the perfect amount of edge to a cocktail dress," said Javier.

GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: "The skin has a yummy healthiness," said Espinet. He powdered skin with MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in Natural for a super natural finish. Instead of blush, Espinet contoured the face with a slightly darker shade of powder, on the edges of the face for increased definition. Eyes were lined with MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder, concentrating the intense black pigment inside the lower lash lines, with a smudge of MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon on top. A coat of MAC ProLash Mascara in Black on uncurled lashes topped off the eyes. Lips were nude, but "not a 60's light lips," said Espinet. He used MAC Pro Lip Erase, a flesh-tone balm, for a pout that looked creamy and healthy - never matte.

GET THE LOOK – HAIR: Javier used products from the Kerastase Green Line for volume. The key to this look is rollers and teasing. "For the Gibson-y pompadour effect in front, you need to use rollers to get the root to really stick up," said Javier. He suggests holding the front piece of hair down flat on the forehead, and rolling hair up into the hot roller for the highest effect. Then, tease at the root, comb over to slightly smooth it, and twist hair up into a chignon in back.

We already know Fergie loves cosmetics by M.A.C. -- after all, it's the brand she chose to wear for her recent wedding. But, M.A.C. also loves Fergie -- she's the current face of their VIVA GLAM collection, and the ads show a fabulously feathered Fergie. And, unless M.A.C. does a better job at hiding flaws than we thought, there was a wee bit of airbrushing going on, too.

The shots, as you can see in the gallery, are sexy and surreal (and kind of makes us wish we had occasion to wear feathered corsets). And as hot as the photos are, they weren't taken strictly to garner attention for the VIVA GLAM line -- she's promoting a limited edition cosmetic for the company to help HIV/AIDS Awareness charities. The singer hopes this will help educate her fans about the dangers of the disease.

You know, we'd like to be all upset about the photoshopping being done here -- she's a beautiful woman wearing a ton of makeup to begin with -- but we think we're just becoming numb. And the fact is, if they hadn't airbrushed her, somebody would probably be writing about the fact that she didn't look like a dewy 20 year old. We're just going to focus on where to get one of those feathered numbers.

Microsoft Upgrades its Image with Geek Chic Clothing Line - Softwear

Filed under: Clothing, Vintage and Retro

The Sure, the evidence for Microsoft being the epitome of distasteful nerd fashion is overwhelming. Between decades of photos of Bill Gates' in his horrendous wardrobe along with the odyssey of Apple's Mac vs. PC commercials, it's easy to believe that if Microsoft were to conceive of a fashion line, it would consist of Cosby sweater vests and awkward-fitting corduroys. Armed with a bunch of retro t-shirt designs and an endorsement from rapper Common, Microsoft is out to set the record straight.
