Man Found Guilty of Cross Dressing in Dubai - Fashion Crime

Filed under: Style in the News, Men

A man dressed as a woman performs in a drag showIf you're planning a trip to the rich and worldly city of Dubai -- land of folklore, myth, and Kids Fashion Week -- make sure to pack some clothing that's unmistakeably specific to your own gender, especially if you're a man. An Indian man working in Dubai was arrested by police in the Mall of the Emirates for wearing women's clothing and mascara, then fined $2,722 by a judge. Our question: what if it turns out that he was wearing manscara?

Heels for Dudes - Yea or Nay?

Punk Rocker Justin Tranter's custom bootsA lot of trends have been trying to work their way across the gender divide these days, with varying degrees of success. For cross gender fashion successes, you need only to look at the makeup counter to see that manscara, guyliner, and foundations are all being received at some level ... and we've heard nothing but rave reviews about mantyhose. Still, are men ever going to warm up to Stuart Weitzman's custom made man heels?

5 Trends in Men's Fashion We Hope to Leave in 2008 - Good Riddance

Each year, we see tons all sorts of short-lived fashion trends that, at the time, seem to have some promise, but look kinda stupid immediately thereafter. That's part of what fashion is all about, and it's cool. Still, every once in a while, we see a look that's so ugly, annoying, or inconvenient, that we hope that it will be stamped out with a vengeance. We''ve poured through our files and made a list -- and, of course we checked it twice -- of the Top 5 menswear trends of 2008 that we hope will die out as quickly as they arrived.

Check out our picks after the fold.

Mantyhose - eMANcipation or borderline cross-dressing?

(Cute, or just cross-dressing? Click the photo for more men in panty -- uh -- we mean MANtyhose)

For whatever reason, it seems appropriate to point out that many of history's "great men" like Napolean have been the tight-wearing types. But now that times have changed -- and men's couture no longer consists of powdered wigs and painted faces. So, staging a comeback for men's hosiery seems just a little bit eccentric and shady.

With the advent of manscara, manties, and now a major campaign to promote the acceptance of men wearing nylon stockings -- we can't tell if this is a genuine fashion trend, OR an attempt to make guys look stupid by convincing them that it's cool to wear pantyhose?

Manscara? Really? Where does it end?

Why do we continue to "man-up" and re-noun perfectly useful products just so men can use them? We've seen: mandals, manties, mantyhose, guyliner, murses, and (sigh, yes, yes, we're guilty, too) murves.

Now Taxi Man London cosmetics presents us with manscara, which is "not just for transvestites anymore." No kidding: it's clear. No self-respecting drag queen would waste time with anything less subtle than Diorshow Black Out.

UK distributor Superdrug will also carry guyliner, which is "A new and versatile eye definer created especially for men."

How intriguing. It's especially for men? How so? Does it smell like Old Spice? Have Rogaine in it to make your lashes grow faster and thicker? What's so andro about it? We're dying to know.

We're also dying for this goofy mancific naming thing to end. If you're man enough to go buy -- never mind wear -- eyeliner, you should have already embraced your inner-make up diva.
