Stylish Costume of the Day: Marie Antoinette

Filed under: Holiday Style, Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Swimwear and Lingerie, Dresses

We all know that movies tend to be sources for Halloween costumes, and after Marie Antoinette, it's no surprise that this year, many a girl is going to parade around the party as the lovely French lady. Though I am normally a big fan of DIY costumes, Marie Antoinette is one that is much, much easier out of the box. Grab a curly platinum updo wig, pour your buxom self into a corset, and hike up that hoop skirt to show off thigh-high tights. If you're daring enough, there are even slightly more trashy risque versions of Marie Antoinette that let you bare your midriff.

Canines as accessories

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

A customer walked into my store last week holding the tiniest, fluffiest, cutest little dog I have ever seen in my entire life. The white Maltese puppy was named "Coach," had a tiny Coach collar and leash, and, to top it all off, was wearing a little sweater with the message "My owner is hotter than yours" embroidered in pastel pink script.

I know this isn't breaking news; fashionistas have been toting tiny canines around Hollywood for a while now, but I live in Texas. Most of the time, once a trend has made it all the way down to the Lone Star State, I can feel pretty confident that it's....well.....over.

I'm worried, though, that carrying pint-size pups doesn't fall into the "passing trend" category. According to a recent article in the New York Times fashion section, little canines, or "sleeve dogs," have been a status symbol for ages, keeping women such as Marie Antoinette and Elizabeth II company, among others. And registration of many of the most popular breeds of small dogs has grown exponentially - the Norwich Terrier has gone up 91% in the last 10 years.

"I think of them as a handbag with a heartbeat," said Robin Bowden, a Manhattan real-estate mogul. And Rebecca Rand, a spokeswoman for the W hotel chain, said guests traveling with small dogs have become such a significant trend that the hotels are now offering services such as pet pillows with special treats placed on them at turndown time.

I know, it's disturbing, right? Something needs to be done, but first I need to pick which dog I want more - the Yorkshire Terrier or the doll-sized Chihuahua. They both fit in my purse, but I can't decide which will match better with my shoes.

A fragrance fit for a queen

How much would you pay to smell like a queen? While those Juicy Couture fragrance ads portraying an Antoinette-like court are charming, the real scent of the queen is a bit different and a lot more pricey. Historian Elisabeth de Feydeau discovered the recipes for Marie Antoinette's fragrances and now Sillage de la Reine "In the Wake of the Queen" is available for purchase. The scent is an amber essence of jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose, iris, cedar and sandalwood and the deluxe 8.5 ounce version sells in a Baccarat flask for $10,500. Believe it or not five of the ten flasks produced have already been sold. You can also buy a smaller (under one ounce) size with less fancy packaging (shown here) for $450 from the chateau of Versailles. The chateau is using sales from the perfume to buy an Antoinette artifact, an ornate wood traveling case, from a private collector. Hot blogging anesthesiologist Book of Joe has the whole story, including the article in the Washington Post.

Imelda Marcos spreads her wings

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrities with Style

With a widely publicized media unveiling scheduled for November 18, Former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos will launch "The Imelda Collection" of jewelry and accessories. Marcos is probably the world's best known shoe horse, but the new fashion line will not include shoes, at least not immediately.

To me, Imelda Marcos is a controversial figure, so naturally, I have mixed feelings about "The Imelda Collection." Don't get me wrong -- I like pretty things as much as the next girl, but I just don't think the way that she dashed about expensive New York stores during her husband's dictatorial rule is exactly admirable.

Then again, if Marie Antoinette gets a second chance, maybe Imelda Marcos deserves one too.

We fashion our wardrobes after films

kirsten dunst as marie antoinetteIn case you haven't noticed, there is quite a hullabaloo surrounding the movie Marie Antoinette, and it seems that the fashion world has taken to it as well. Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette appeared on the most recent Vogue magazine, and elements of the style have showed up on the runways, from high hair (oh, how I am hating my wispy fine stick straight hair that doesn' do anything but hang there) to puffy skirts to brocade fabrics.

But it's not just Marie Antoinette this year. Film has definitely affected the fashion world (and vice versa, I suppose) through the decades, and Forbes has put together a short list of some of the more influential films.
  • Funny Face - Audrey Hepburn in "the infamous black turtleneck and skinny pants" that is now the highlight of a Gap campaign
  • The Birds - "the quintessential Hitchcockian look"
  • Belle Du Jour - "pilgrim" flats
  • Bonnie & Clyde - shoulder length bob, pencil skirts and berets
  • Annie Hall - "oversized, exaggerated menswear alongside earth-toned, patchwork smocks. It's messy, incoherent and ... altogether genius."
  • Out Of Africa - white linens, safari jackets and all things khaki
  • Working Girl - the Power Suit
  • Singles - the definitive grunge look: floral dresses topped with lumberjack flannels and paired with combat boots
  • Almost Famous - hippie chic -- with shearling coats, floppy hats and Frye boots.Secretary
  • Secretary - "the sexy librarian"
  • Stepford Wives - prim and proper '50s look

Trend radar: The empire waist

Forget about Marie Antoinette! Clothes this season are channeling another powerful French woman: Josephine. But it's not the powdered wigs or the whalebone corsets -- what we are seeing a lot of this season is Josephine's empire waist.

The empire waist (pronounced "ahm-pier") is a cut that gathers beneath the bustline. What I think most women find surprising about this style is that the empire waist is actually extremely flattering on a variety of bodies. By nipping the dress or the top higher than the natural waistline the empire waist creates a long, elegant silhouette. If you are pear-shaped, for instance, the higher waist draws the eye up toward your bust and your neck.
