The fashion world is a curious place. One show you are given lovely gifts and an excellent seat, the next you are standing behind the back row, and then there are the times you don't even get in.

"We are the fashion diaspora," I remarked to a new friend as we gathered our haul and moved from the line to get checked in to the line to get into the show. Everyone in the lines was exchanging ideas on how the system of receiving seat assignments (can't they computerize this thing?) and muttering about how it didn't seem quite this crazy last year.

It was during the first day that I experienced the painful sting of fashion rejection. We had checked in and been given the lowly "S" scrawled the cute "Please Disturb Me" tags for the Meghan Fabulous show. We accepted our low station and joined the long line for standing room only guests.

Alas there was no room at the No-tel Motel. The line moved right past the show entrance, offering us a brief taste of the promised land, before we were led into the street past the garbage bags ripe with the remains of the many free margaritas consumed. We had been denied.

Then, a reprieve. We were driven back in a throng toward the doors. It seemed like we would be attending after all. We crowded back into a narrow tunnel, a restless crowd of nuclear blondes and spiky-haired boys.

Just when it seemed that the magic doors might open, a harried flock of security guards informed us that no one was getting in. We, fashion's also-rans, would be a fire hazard.

"Now this is fashion week," I muttered as we paraded back by the trash bags again on our way out. Oh well, it looks like it was a lovely show.
