Birthday best wishes to Betsey Johnson, fashion icon!

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We could kind of say that we caught it with Kristen's post on this drool-worthy ring, but really, we almost missed the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Bestey Johnson fashion label.

Betsey and her business partner and CEO Chantal Bacon had a big bash last Friday to celebrate their long and successful collaboration, which officially started on Betsey's birthday, August 10, 1978.

She and Madonna pretty much defined style in the 80s and her signature look is just as fun and popular today as it was 30 years ago, with embellished skulls, ruffles and bright colors. To celebrate her anniversary and because of popular demand (the best reason, right?) this fall will see the release of the Betsey Johnson Vintage Collection.

The bulletproof is in the jacket

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Men, Celebrities with Style

Bulletproof cars are so passé, that's Al Capone stuff. We'll see your Tom Cruise and raise you one better- bulletproof clothing.

In Mexico there have been 1,400 drug-related deaths this year alone. Obviously that isn't something to be taken, or discussed, lightly. However, it does appear to be a pretty good marketing campaign for Miguel Caballero, a clothing maker from Colombia who recently opened a shop on Avenida Presidente Masaryk, "a high-end shopping thoroughfare in the Polanco neighborhood, one of the most upscale in Mexico City." Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a shirt

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Hola, nuestros amigos, hoy es mayo quinto. ¿Por qué no celebrar por el estilo?

That's right, we just dropped Spanish on your ass. We're pretty sure we said, "Hello, our friends, today is May 5th. Why not celebrate in style?" However, we could have been telling you about the pencil we had for lunch. It's a tricky language.

Lauren Wolf Jewelry

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

Jewelry designer Lauren Wolf has some distinctive influences in her jewelry: She studied in coastal Mexico and now works "out of her studio in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge." While these might seem like opposing forces, she finds amazing and creative ways to use these two influences in her jewelry.

Textures like sting ray skin and and snake skin are cast in gold and silver, giving an urban feel to an otherwise coastal motif. However, I'm partial to the work she does with floral designs -- simple, beautiful flowers are given an edgy twist, so instead of just looking pretty and girly, they look feminine and badass (and who doesn't love that?). Lauren has lots of celebrity fans, including Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz, and Brooke Shields.

This isn't your grandma's costume jewelry -- it's the real deal. If you're looking for an incredible signature piece that you can be sure folks will notice for years to come, you've got to check out Lauren Wolf.

Fashion victims: emo kids under attack in Latin America

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans

You might think emo kids have it tough here in the States. They always look awkward and every once and while they might get dirty looks, or people yelling insults at them from passing cars -- but they've nothing on their counterparts in Mexico and Chile. In Latin America, your choice to shop at Hot Topic can make you a target of mob violence.

No one is sure exactly how the violence against Pete Wentz wanabees got started, but a lot of it being blamed on a TV personality name Kristoff. Sometime after he went off on a rant about how emo sucks, mobs of punk and metal fans have been descending on the poor little emo kids and giving them the ol' beat down. Kristoff has called for an end to the violence, but it seems like the sins of emo-fashion will not go unpunished.
