Yikes, Madonna is losing her fashion edge

Well this should upset her, even if the A-Rod thing doesn't. The New York Times has tolled the death bell on Madonna's fashion influence. She's...boring!

It's bad when the Gray Lady calls you a gray lady. Bestey Johnson likened her look to Christie Brinkley going to court. Whoa there Bestey! As lovely as Ms. Brinkley is, she's never going to inspire gay men to dress like her for Halloween. Well, not the fun ones anyway.

Madonna turns 50 in a few weeks, on August 16th. (Yeah, she's a Leo - shocker, right?) Her age comes up in the article, along with the reminder that she's a mom, and the idea that maybe just can't get away with doing wild stuff any more. Cause you know, she's given birth and she's old.

We happen to think it's crazy for people to write off Madonna. How many times does she have to reinvent herself to prove that she is superhuman? Kinda boring in terms of partying (i.e. no drinking or drugs), but I bet she can stay out dancing all night, do the best moves and then have dirty group sex -- as a top and a bottom -- with all the hottest DJs, if she felt like it.

What do people expect? That she turn up in a Hanes Underwear commercial with Michael Jordan? Please, only Charlie Sheen could sink so low. That said, yeah, this dress is hideous. Enough with the Candace Bergen/Murphy Brown neckwear collection!

Now women can smell like Antonio Banderas

Filed under: Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

Move over fragrance experts with your fancy Italian names, it seems that people can't get enough of fragrances by Queen Latifah, Avril Lavigne, Derek Jeter, and eve Tim McGraw. Antonio Banderas has apparently been such a successful name in the fragrance business, that he's teamed up with Puig Beauty USA to debut his first fragrance for women called Blue Seduction. We were pretty surprised to find that this will be the 5th fragrance to bear the Banderas name.

According to market analysts, celebrity fragrances are the hottest way to merge mass with class -- and Antonio Banderas' image is a near perfect sales rep. Antonio's Latin lover persona is apparently something that dudes want to emulate and women want to get with. If his success with men's cologne is any indicator, Blue Seduction should be a top 10 seller and the big chain stores. We remember when Michael Jordan's fragrance debuted in the 90's, it seemed really confusing and not so classy. We thought: who wants to smell like sweat and Gatorade? We were wrong.

Tim McGraw designs men's fragrance

Filed under: Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

Let's be clear: the very idea of celebrity "designed" fragrances is weird. Sure, we'll dress like our favorite actor, musician, or celebutant, but who wants to smell like Britney Spears? In any case, men who enjoy emitting an Eau de Michael Jordan, Antonio Banderas, or Derek Jeter now have a new, and equally as unappealing option: Tim McGraw.

Will Ferrell make Nascar chic?

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

Will Ferrell's new movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby came out last week to mixed fanfare. That fanfare goes something like this: Will Ferrell is great, Sacha Cohen (a.k.a. Ali G) is great, and the rest of the movie .... well, let's move on to the larger issue: is NASCAR cool?

Born in Charlotte, NC -- just like Michael Jordan and Billy Graham -- NASCAR (the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) officially formed in 1948. Ever since, it's slowly shed its southern twang, gaining network TV time and mainstream sponsors along the way. These days, it's the second most popular sport (at least in terms of TV ratings) in the US, just behind football. Take that, Major League Baseball!

And yet, can a sport be cool when it calls drivers "athletes", prides itself on burst eardrums and fiery crashes and -- most importantly of all -- forces its stars into neon orange jumpsuits with "Tide" (or Dupont or whatever) logos all over them?
