Finally: Diversity Starting to Rear its Head in Modeling Industry

Filed under: Style in the News

Firstly, we don't think the following phenomenon means the modeling industry no longer has a problem with diversity. Our excitement, in fact, should suggest otherwise since seeing people of color in prominent fashion glossies shouldn't warrant attention because our world is, well, not comprised of human beings that all look the same.

That said, models of Indian decent are finally having what they call a "moment" in fashion right now. Lakishma Menon, who just snagged the Hermes and Givenchy campaigns, was recently snapped by Mario Testino for Vogue Paris and Patrick Demarchlier for La Wintour's tome. Also, IMG newbie Kangana Dutta was recently shot for Harper's Bazaar.

Hopefully, this isn't just a temporary thing because these girls are fire!

Lily Cole in Louis Vuitton - I want that!

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

Model Lily ColeAt the Louis Vuitton & Richard Prince dinner, model Lily Cole showed off a one of a kind style in a Louis Vuitton frock that knocked our socks off (although hers stayed snugly on!).

While a look that includes so much lace, white socks, and Mary Janes are best left to either supermodels or five year old girls in Easter attire, we must admit we were certainly swooning over Cole's look and will definitely be keeping a more watchful eye on her delightful style.

Models roaring down the runway, real live furry animals, genitalia everywhere -- ok, so maybe we're exaggerating just a tad, but the Bullet 4 Peace show truly was unconventionally awesome!

Hearing aids meet high fashion

Filed under: Accessories, Style for a Cause, Fashion Week

When thinking of hearing aids, probably the last thing that comes to mind is fashion, but one company is looking to change that. Starkey Laboratories, which created the Zōn hearing aid, had models wear their new range of hearing aids at Manchester Fashion Week.

The Zōn is the company's attempt to remove the stigma that's often associated with hearing devices -- this range is designed to be more stylish, and its motto is "Where art meets science." And why not? Technology is advanced enough that hearing aids no longer have to be ugly and bulky -- why not make them sleek and stylish?

The death of polaroid film: a video montage

Filed under: Style in the News

Last season, the fashion industry mourn the lost of a very close friend, Polaroid instant film. It was tough. The casting directors who use the treasured filmed to snap all of those models for runways shows cried, the magazine editors screamed, and anyone who grew up in the 80s scratched their heads: what are we suppose to do now when we want to be cool and retro at the same time?

Well, as was suspected, some have been on a never ending quest to hunt down and subsequently store as much film as they can get their little instant camera fingers on. While everyone continues to stockpile, watch this clip by Wall Street Journal that explains the significance of instant film in fashion.

London Fashion Week overlooks the skinny model issue

Filed under: Style in the News

There was a general consensus last week that all of the models walking the runways under the Bryant Park tents looked considerably more healthy than last season. It was also noted that several models were actually turned away during New York Fashion Week for being too thin and unhealthy looking.

This is a great step in the right direction after very popular mannequins like Coco Rocha and Ali Michael both spoke out earlier this year about the pressures to stay thin in the modeling industry and the life-threatening techniques the two girls used to maintain those unrealistic weights of theirs.

But that aside, it appears the London crowd is far less indifferent about letting rail thin models stomp their runways.

As London Fashion Week kicked off on Monday, the models appeared to be just as tiny as they were the previous season. Last year, the British Fashion Council "announced plans to require models to obtain a health certificate to prevent them from developing and concealing eating problems" but those plans were thrown right out the window once the industry began to get annoyed with the "healthy" thing.

Luckily, though, supermodel Erin O' Connor launched the "Model Sanctuary" this season, a place where models can "eat and drink health foods for free, learn about the risks of eating disorders, and have access to a concierge who can provide information about London to make it easier and safer for them to enjoy their brief time in the British capital."

It's not going to have that much of an impact considering girls are fearful that if they eat anything they won't be able to book their shows, but at least it's start in the right direction.

Pooghe Laundry - sexy underwear with a silver secret

Filed under: Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Men

Here's an idea: luxurious base-layer clothing (translation: underwear) that is super comfortable and uses nanotechnology to prevent odor.

Don't go running to the patent office. Pooghe Laundry already did it, and they somehow even made it sexy, too!

Pooghe uses a high tech method called "SmartSilver" that puts silver ions actually in the fabric. When the ions are released, they kill the bacteria from perspiration and voila, no odor.

The line includes men's and women's underwear, long and short sleeve tees, camisoles, socks, tank tops, leggings and compression cold weather apparel, all made from soft Supima cotton. The founder, Steve Monte, manufactures everything in the US, ensuring that all production is sweatshop-free and Fair Trade.

All good things. But really, we all want to see what it looks like on. In the gallery, scantily clad models who we can be sure smell as good as they look.

Meet the models

They are everywhere -- magazines, television, and events. And after being bombarded with images of fashion week, we've begun to wonder – who are the girls in the clothes?

Now we have heard designers say that models are just "hangers," implying that they are otherwise meaningless and Iman stating much of the same, "human hangers" with no personality. But we beg to differ. There are a handful of bright young things that are on verge becoming the next Kate's, Gisele's and Naomi's.

Let's take a closer look and start putting names to those beautiful faces.

People Tree's ethical runway show

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Green Fashion

People Tree, a pioneer in the world of eco-conscious fashion, held a swanky runway show in the hip London club Whiskey Mist at Zeta last night, and it wasn't only the clothing that was held to ethical standards. People Tree chose to use models from Quintessentially Models, an agency that "takes an ethically-based approach to model management refusing to represent any 'size zero' models."

Don't think for a second, though, that this was a bunch of chubby hippies looking at tie-dye t-shirts. People Tree's Autumn/Winter 2008 is full of trendy dresses, tops, and capes. Check out the gallery to see a sampling of styles.

Multicultural runways - it's about time!

Filed under: Style in the News, Fashion Week

The past few months the fashion industry has been buzzing about the obvious preference for white models. Fashion photographer Nick Knight expressed his anger months ago with an insane online video featuring a sexy Naomi Campbell shooting up a fashion show. While many agents, magazines and other industry insiders claim that there is simply a shortage of models of color, Knight makes it clear in his vid that this is just not true.
