The trinity of man bags: No murses allowed

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Vintage and Retro, Men

We've said it before, and we'll most likely say it again. The bag world is female-centric. Sure, the murse is everywhere, but that's not a man bag, that's a woman's bag for men. Schematics, yes, but true.

That's why we were pleased to come across three companies that make bags that are undeniably masculine in their own fields, those being luggage, computer and diaper. Yes, we're talking about diaper bags, too.

Meet QWSTION, BOOQ and Diaper Dude, our holy trinity of man bags*:

Father's Day Gift Guide: for the new father

There's nothing more manly than becoming a father -- it's something that a woman technically cannot do. Still, most of the paraphernalia that comes along with the manhood's highest honor is far from being flattering to one's masculinity, but times they are a changing. Somebody somewhere had the good sense to start marketing dad-friendly diaper bags, and some of them are actually cool enough to be mistaken for a murse, laptop bag, or holdall.

We were totally impressed when we ran across this skull and iron cross-emblazoned diaper bag made by a company called DadGear. Sure, it costs $79.99 -- but you can't put a price tag on the male ego. If you're not the skull and iron cross type, you can tone it down with a Diaper Dude bag from Target. It's a little cheaper and doesn't put off that I'm trying too hard to be a cool dad vibe.

Male bags as presented by Refinery29

Male bags? Really? Is the label given to bags designed and/or deemed acceptable for men supposed to be a play on 'mailbag' or something a little more, um, masculine? Either way, it is still better than the alternative, the murse (man + purse).

It seems that despite the great strides made in equal rights for men that carry bags, there is still a stigma attached to the act of doing so. Refinery29 believes the cause for such chastisement is due to the lack of toughness available in said bags. We're inclined to agree.

That being the case Refinery29 created a list of male bags they felt worthy of the title, corny as it is:

Mugged for your man purse

Those of us who take our work with us wherever we go are forever indebted to the inventor of the man purse -- or "man bag," if you feel the need to butch it up. However, recent research suggests that your murse is likely to get you mugged.

According to researchers, this is because thieves know that guys carry expensive stuff in the man bags (laptops, cameras, etc) -- making them a more appealing target than women, who more often use their purses only as fashion accessories.

I'm a mess without my murse, so this is a serious dilemma. Hopefully this news will prompt designers to incorporate security features into new bags -- but if not, I suggest mouse traps. You'll know they're in there, so you probably won't catch yourself, and any mugger who breaks his finger trying to grab your laptop will think twice before he tries it again.

Turn trash bags into a messenger bag (VIDEO)

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Whatever Style, Men, Style for a Cause

MAKE messengerI think I have about six messenger bags and only one "proper" purse. I have one bag in particular that I really love: my big, bright orange Lacoste messenger because it's just large enough to carry my travel sketchbook, my laptop, my iPod, and all other bits and bobs of my everyday life. Sometimes, however, even my largest messenger bag isn't enough to hold one of my bigger sketchbooks and I wish I had an easy (and cheap) way of making my own bag.

MAKE's video podcasts have always been a great source of easy, geeky "Weekend Projects," like making tiny solar-powered bots or your own one-speed bike. I know, I know; it's probably not very appealing to the fashion-savvy, but the most recent video podcast really interested me because of my aforementioned messenger bag problem. Using simple kitchen trash bags or plastic grocery bags, some wax paper, an iron, and a sewing machine, you can make a full-on messenger bag. It's a fashionable way to recycle and, since the materials are damn near free, experimenting with different methods or styles won't be a problem. I'm excited to get started on mine.
