Filed under: Cosmetics, Contests & Giveaways, Beauty Tips

Win the chicest nail polish to hit the scene since Chanel's Vamp: KnockOut Nail Polish, specializing in matte shades that look ah-mazingly edgy on fingers and toes.

But then we tried Karen, a true red matte shade that's perfect for spring, and fell instantly in love. Concieved of by makeup artist Mike Potter, the entire line consists of four shades, plus a genious matte topcoat that turns any polish matte (!).

Superheroes, now rescuing nails

After the superhero themed Met Institute Gala, you know, the one where no one donned costumes, there have been several souls trying to revive the masked men and women we've all come to know and love.

First, Topshop created a mini collection with Batman-inspired graphic t-shirts and accessories covered in Wonder Woman's bold stars.

And now, popular nail polish brand, China Glaze, pays tribute to superheroes with their new paint collection, Operation Colour. The set of lacqueres come in bold colors like a golden mellow yellow and bright red with names like "Secret Peri-Winkle," "Code Orange," "Agent Lavender," "Golden Opportunity," "Revolution," and "Pink Underground."

We're not sure if you'll be able to leap tall buildings after your first coat, but you'll definitely have the best looking nails this fall.

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Believe it or not, nail polish does not go bad. Now we know we've been adamant before about getting rid of those beauty products when they expire. However, this is one that you can keep until it dries up or gets goopy on you.

Why?

We copy their hair, buy the dresses they wear, and try to match fashions with our favorite celebrities. So it only makes sense that we would identify with the way they do their nails.

From demure pinks to glittery metallics to wild patterns and colors, there are a million ways to paint your nails. Next time you're at the nail salon, when they send you to pick your shade, ask yourself, who do I feel like being today? Dark and wild, yet sophisticated, like Charlize Theron? Young and trendy, like Scarlett Johansson? Or are you Barbra, with nails like buttah?

Nail Polish Summer School: Sick of stained nails?

The last time we removed the polish from our toenails and didn't have time to repaint them, we were horribly embarrassed. Not because we're so particular about having our toenails painted -- simply because we kept them painted so often that, when we took the polish off, our toenails were discolored! Eeewww!!!

Nail Polish Summer School: Best pedi colors for the beach

When you're planning a trip to the beach, what all do you need? Of course, you've got to pack a beach towel, a sexy bathing suit, a beach cover-up, a floppy hat, fabulous sunglasses, loads of sunscreen, a book or gossip mag, and ... a pedicure! You can't slide into your flip-flops without gorgeous toes, can you?

Here at StyleDash, we have some specific ideas about the colors that should be worn at the beach. We're fans of this year's popular dark shades, and we also like French pedicures as well as soft, pale colors. However, when you're digging your toes in the sand, there's only one way to go with your toenail polis -- bright!

Whether you prefer pink, red, coral, or something else, you can definitely find a bright version of your favorite. We've got some of our favorites, but we want to know -- what color do you wear when you hit the beach?

Nail Polish Summer School: What's your favorite brand of polish?

When you shop for nail polish, are you a brand snob? Do you hit the cosmetic counters to purchase a $20 bottle, or are you more likely to scour the aisles of the local drugstore for a fabulous bargain polish?

We have an array of polishes -- some cheap, some a bit pricier -- and we truly believe they each have their strengths. Some of the pricier polishes have better staying power -- they don't fade or chip. However, some of our drugstore cheapy polishes are quick-dry, so when we're in a rush, there's no better option.

Nail Taxi arrives in New York!

At last. Nail Taxi, a mobile nail boutique, is in New York City. It may already be in your city. Do you live in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Richmond, or DC? I hope you do, because Nail Taxi rocks.

Here's how it goes. You call them and say, "Oh hey Nail Taxi, I think I need to get my nails done tomorrow. Can you come over at like two?" And just like a best friend, they respond "Yeah, sure! Should I bring Chocolate Souffle or Peppermint Pleasure?"

Oh, how tasty their special mani-pedis sound. Green Tea & Cucumber, Cinnamon Bun, and they even offer micro-dermabrasion and hand massage!

My favorite of their services has to be the parties, though. Just think of it. You and all your friends get together and Nail Taxi comes to paint you up while you sip martinis. Nail Taxi can even finagle the drinks and decorations! At last, someone will come over, get your boyfriend tipsy and then quickly clean the dirt out from under his fingernails before he notices. I wonder if they charge extra for stealth.

In conclusion: Welcome, Nail Taxi. Welcome. I lay palm fronds at your perfectly pedicured feet.

Is high-end nail polish really worth it?

Black Nail PolishShort answer: No, not particularly.

Yeah, it's experience-sharing time. Recently, I decided to take a break from my drugstore nail polish and try out a taste of the good life, treating myself to a bottle of $20 Chanel "Black Satin" polish (yes, I like black nails). Since my usual nail routine consists of $1 NYC varnish and top coat, Chanel was a big step for me. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting... Suddenly magical nails that never chip, always look perfect, and play Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major every time I open my hands? Naw. I guess I just expected good quality... at least $20's worth of quality. To my dismay, the polish still chipped quickly and, most surprisingly, the coats wore thin and didn't hold up as well as my cheap drugstore polish. Looking at my nails right now, which I painted only two days ago, the solid black has faded to a strange deep brown. With my drugstore polish, it seemed to chip more easily, but at least the color held up very well and stayed an eternally abysmal black. Maybe this is why goths aren't known for turning to Chanel.

I suppose I just haven't stumbled across the right brand yet... I guess it's time for me to find the happy medium between the cheapest of the cheap and the high-end.

Styles that Stick: Black nail polish

Filed under: Vintage and Retro, Cosmetics

Black nail polishThat's right, I said it: Black nail polish. To most people, the trend may bring about thoughts of wannabe-punk thirteen year-olds and surly teen goths that hang out by the local 7-11 dumpster, but I assure you, black nail polish will stick around for a very long time. Just take a look at the popularity of Chanel's "Black Satin" and New York Magazine's brief -- but fascinating -- history of black nail polish.

I started wearing black nail polish a few years ago because of my nail-biting habits. It started getting out of control when I realized that I loathed shaking peoples' hands, in fear of them seeing my horrible, gnawed up fingernails. Since I knew I couldn't possibly resort to the bitter nail-biting cream (I have a tendency to forget I have stuff on my hands and proceed to rub my eyes), I decided I would try wearing bold nail polish all the time. So, I bought some nice black nail polish -- black being the only color that goes with everything I own -- and started wearing it all the time. Having nice-looking nails turned out to be incentive enough to keep my hands away from my mouth. Thanks to black nail polish, I haven't bitten my nails in over two years!

End testimonial. Ahem...
