Beauty editor's tip: Emmy eyes

(Hayden Panetierre at the 2008 Emmy Awards)

As a professional beauty junkie (and former Beauty Editor at Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar), I've tried every product to come down the pike in the last decade. So I've discovered what works:

Here's a trick to applying eyeliner that lasts. The secret: layering your products. Once you do it a few times it takes two minutes flat.

1. Apply liquid eyeliner, like Dior Style Liner across the tops of lashlines. Don't worry if the line isn't perfect; it doesn't matter. Your goal is to create a dark line, not a precise one.

2. Apply a kohl pencil liner OVER the line, and on lower lashline. The key is to use the right product. The best, most pigmented and easily smudgable is Tarte Eyeliner.

3. With a small, fluffy makeup brush, dust a sheer light brown, gray, silver, or gold shadow (offers great options) over the top line, smudging and blending as you go. Use this color to "shape" the intensity of the color as you move up toward the crease. Keep blending until your eyes pop to your satisfaction. Extra Credit: Dampen the brush before applying the shadow; it sets the color even further.

4. Finish with mascara. Curl lashes.

I want that! Natalie Portman in Miu Miu

We. Are. Dying. Natalie Portman's sweetness shined in this puff sleeved Miu Miu dress. But it's not even the totally 80's sleeves that get us. It's the dress paired with unexpected yet simple accessories like a purple sash belt, shiny kitten heels and a black ruffled clutch.

And from one curly haired chick to another (who is totally sick of straightening daily by the way), we are really liking that your rocking your curl. Just bring the curl back baby. Bring it back.

Project Runway: The Brown family loses

Filed under: Style in the News, Daily Obsession

Guess what reality show surpassed all expectations with their second episode last night? Project Runway! After the premiere episode that practically put everyone to sleep, the producers of the show came back swinging last night (complete with Natalie Portman!).

This week, the roles were reversed and the designers had to take orders from their models. And the models, well, they were sent out to go pick out eco-friendly fabrics that would be made into cocktail dresses for this green challenge. As you can imagine, madness ensued at the fabric store and back at Parson's when the designer's nearly fainted at the sight of some of the god awful stuff (throw-up brown silk) the models brought back.

In the gallery, check out the ups, downs, good, bad, and ugly of last night's episode and find out where Weslley, our Marc Jacobs boy wonder, is now in the competition.

Natalie Portman to appear on Project Runway tonight!

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We think everyone can unanimously agree that last week's premiere episode of the fifth season of Project Runway was a tad bit on the boring side. We're not sure if it was because of the fact that the challenge had been done before (and better) or because the contestants didn't seem that interesting, but it took everything within us not to turn the channel after the first ten minutes.

However, we've never been known to quit something we've only recently just started. So we're hoping tonight's episode of Project Runway will be exponentially greater than last week's. And we have a strange feeling (wink) it just might.

Eco-friendly cheerleader, Natalie Portman, will be guest judging tonight's episode. Cool, right? We imagine the contestants will have to incorporate Natalie's vegan shoes into their looks. Anyways, as we all wait in suspense, check out this clip of a preview of tonight's episode. Tim Gunn's "Holla at ya boy" is priceless.

Flip-flops may give you cancer

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

Earlier this week we learned that flip-flops could mess up your feet, and today comes another attack on the summer-friendly footwear: it might cause cancer.

The news, while shocking at first, is really more straightforward that you might think. The outcry over open-toed sandals has less to with some mysterious connection between rubber, leather and sensitive skin, and more to do with that skin's increased exposure to the sun. Especially now that flip-flops -- once a common target of snakry style critics' disdain -- are becoming acceptable among celebs and the fashion elite, doctors are concerned that they'll see an increased number of foot cancer cases (and in fact, some doctors report that they already are).

Are these celebs at risk for foot cancer?

Check out this list of celebrity clothing designers and then cast your vote -- who's line would you be most likely to wear?

From Red Carpet to Your Closet: Natalie Portman at Cannes

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

Natalie Portman certainly showed her love of ruffles at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Nearly every dress she wore was covered in them! And while ruffles can be overwhelming, we love so many aspects of this look that we're willing to forget about the fact that you can't tell whether she's got a waist or a baby belly.

We know how you can successfully pull off a look similar to Natalie's -- check out the gallery to get the scoop!

Cannes Film Festival: Behind the scenes with a red carpet photographer

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

Here we go. I've beaten flight delays, jet lag, sharing a room the size of a closet, and driving a scooter for the first time in my life.

Before my Chopard party, I went over to the Hotel Majestic Cannes Barrière to catch some of the Jury Panel leaving to the opening night ceremony for "Blindness." Sat around for an hour with French fans with point and shoot cameras, until Mischa Barton showed up with her over the shoulder glamour. She was followed by the always classy Faye Dunaway, then Natalie Portman in a stylish purple strapless dress. And I don't know who Amira Casar is, but I dig her meter long bow tie and the checkerboard skirt. Is it suitable for Cannes?

After that it was off to Chopard, who hosted a party celebrating Italian designer Alberta Ferretti. Singer/actress and all around lick Juliette Lewis disc jockeyed the party where she played disco, techno and a few of her own tunes. Australian actress Cate Blanchett posed with the designer and a few friends.

Conclusion? Purple is already a graceful theme for ladies this year. We'll see how much more comes out. Also, Alberta Ferretti works well with the larger jewelry of Chopard -- definitely a nice combination.

Natalie Portman at the launch of Te Casan

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

When we first heard that Natalie Portman was coming out with her own line of vegan shoes back in January, there were some doubts as to who would actually spend so much money on such pricey shoes -- even if they are animal cruelty free. The general consensus was that you can find pleather shoes at Target for about $200 dollars less and still not hurt any animals.

But, Natalie's line has officially launched and if you check on the official Té Casan (meaning "a woman's path," in the Gaelic language), website you'll see that almost every pair is sold out. Granted, the site specifies that they only have 100 shoes in each size for the pre-order, so that might have something to do with it. Those vegans are a passionate group of people and it looks like if they see a cause they like, they'll support it whole heartedly. Besides, compared to Stella McCartney's vegan shoe line, where a pair will set you back $800, Natalie makes being vegan look cheap!

I'm normally hesitant to endorse any celebrity clothing lines because in general, I feel like starlettes these days will put their name on anything just to make a quick dollar. But that doesn't seem to be the case with Natalie. She has been a known animal activist for quite some time now. Vegan and organic products are becoming more and more popular so it makes sense that she would want to back something like this. Would you buy her expensive vegan shoes just to make a statement?

Browse through the gallery above to see Natalie at the Te Casan vegan footwear collection launch party alongside designer Rogan Gregory. There are a few close ups of the shoes themselves. While they're all cute enough...honestly, $185 for a basic ballet flat made by an actress who's not technically a designer, and really not even that into fashion? Let's just say that I might be willing to sell my first born for a pair of Louboutins...but probably not for a pair of Portman's.
