Steampunk jewelry by Rivkasmom blends the future and the past

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Men, Daily Obsession

Steampunk is a counter-intuitive sci-fi concept. It's about the future, but set in the past, usually Victorian era England. The technology is pre-digital and steam-powered, but it's also quite modern and computer-driven. Analog computers, that is, that float over cities on dirigibles. See? Confusing. Let's stick to the aesthetics of it.

If you enjoyed the look of City of Lost Children, Van Helsing, Howl's Moving Castle or Lemony Snicket, then you like steampunk. One of the most distinctive visual characteristics is a quasi-Victorian mechanism, with lots of polished brass and clockworks.

Interested? Well, before you pull out the superglue and renovate your laptop, start by decorating yourself with some mechanically beautiful necklaces, cufflinks, earrings and brooches from Rivkasmom on Etsy. They really capture the essence of steampunk, with clocks, trains, balloons, and so much shiny brass! The items are all handmade, original designs, and one of a kind, so if you see something you like in the gallery, rush over to Etsy before some steampunk beats you to it!

Lauren Conrad, now making over-priced accessories

Much like teen internet sensation Cory Kennedy and Manchester supermodel Agyness Deyn, you can't knock the hustle of Lauren Conrad.

Love them or hate them, these women have drive.

While she lacks any type of design ability and always presents herself as a spoiled self-entitled brat on her show The Hils, Lauren must be commended on her entrepreneurial skills.

Creepy cool Lady Grey Jewelry

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

What do you get when you mix a background in dental work with art school metals training? Well, when you multiply that interesting mix by two, the result is the just-this-side of macabre Lady Grey Jewelry.

Jill Martinelli and Sabine Le Guyader are the Mass Art-trained designers behind this bone/wood/icon obsessed line of necklaces, bracelets, rings and wearable objects. They work out of a studio in Brooklyn and as their totally cool site puts it, are "inspired by objects of decay -- such as teeth, branches and bones."

Pearls are always perfect

pearls
There's no question that pearls are a timeless accessory in every girl's jewelry box. The question, however, is whether a girl can wear pearls without looking Queen Elizabeth. In other words, does a strand of pearls scream "matronly?"

According to Teri Agins, fashion reporter for the Wall Street Journal, answers that there are ways to update the classic look of pearls, which went from "First Lady" and matronly to fashionable and modern in the late 1990s. The way to do it is to layer single strands, particularly longer ones, with other necklaces made of other materials like chains, beads, and stones. And of course, there are no more rules anymore about matching earrings to necklaces. If you're wearing pearls, you don't have to wear pearl earrings.

Styles that Stick: Strand of Pearls

Filed under: Accessories, Vintage and Retro

strand of pearls
If you've got nothing else in your closet beside a little black dress, then the only thing you need to have in your jewelry box is a strand of pearls. Whether they're an heirloom from your great grandmother, an anniversary gift from your significant other, or something you bought for yourself just last week, you've got to have them. In other words, if you don't have a set, it's time to dip into your savings and invest in a fabulous set of pearls. There really isn't an occasion where you can't wear pearls and look fabulous.

Pearls come in different sizes (diameters) and the strands come in different lengths, but the most basic, versatile is 5-7 mm diameter length (for me) is 18", which falls slightly below the space between my collar bones. It's a length that works for most necklines on dresses, as well as under a shirt or blouse worn with a suit. Oh girls, if a strand of pearls whispers "class' with a little black dress, they definitely scream "sexy power" when worn with a sleek black pantsuit!

I have a few strands. My grandmother gave me my first necklace sometime back when I was in college. Over the years, I've been gifted a few more strands in different colors and different lengths, but I always go back to the ones from my grandmother!
