Classy March Madness Ties for the Courtside or Courtroom

Just in time for March Madness, Vineyard Vines is offering up a selection of classy superfan ties for those who want to give their team a shout out in a formal and conservative way (which is really no way to give your team a shout-out, if you think about it). Sure, every single Division I school has its logo plastered across every item from do-rags to whitey tighties, but few if any of these items could be called classy. Many of these ties -- with the exception of schools with a hopelessly ugly mascot -- actually make the grade.

Tip of the day: Make like Jackie O.

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Oh sure scarves of all kinds – winter scarves, knit scarves, wool scarves and even warm weather scarves – have been trendy for some time. But not since Jackie O. have we seen prime little neck scarves like these.

The ladies-who-lunch neckware was updated on the recent runways of fan favs like Balenciaga and Dolce & Gabbana in popping colors and prints.

Alexander McQueen's creepy necktie/speedo

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

We deeply respect an individual's right to wear whatever kind of swimsuit they want -- or even their right not to wear one -- but we totally did a double-take when we saw Alexander McQueen's creepy neck-binding men's swimsuit. In fact, we kind of did that thing where you vomit a little in the back of your throat. Some have compared it to Borat's famous over-the-shoulder thong, but honestly -- we think this one is much worse.

The thing about swimsuits is that they are meant to cover only what is deem inappropriate in public. For men, that's usually below the waist (unless they've got an outrageously hairy back). This suit looks more like some kind of kinky dominatrix outfit than something a person would choose to wear. Plus, it seems like it might pose a strangulation hazard if you wore it out on the water. What do you say -- is it really as hideous as we think it is?

Could it be that this suit was designed for women vacationing in Southern France? Maybe this guy was handed it by mistake.

Sovereign Beck: give you neck some love

Unfortunately for a lot of us, neckties are a mundane part of our 9 to 5 life -- I feel for ya salespeople. But just because they're part of the required dress code at work, that's no reason ignore the supreme power that you can wield by having the coolest necktie in the room.

One way to be sure that your Half-Windsor knot is as impressive as the brilliant things you have to say, is to start with an elegant tie like those made by the design gurus at Sovereign Beck.

Two former pupils of the Rhode Island School of Design, Ryan Sovereign and William Beck are dedicated to creating designs that fall into that narrow space between provocative and timeless. It doesn't hurt that their ties are 100% silk and crafted by hand.

To these guys, each design is a "statement of individuality." Fortunately each design is also a limited run, so you don't end up making the same statement as some other individual at the office party.

Of course, a statement like this doesn't come cheap -- it will set you back about $90. Still, I can appreciate where they're coming from. It's not often that you find a tie that speaks to your inner fashion-geek and you don't feel stupid wearing it.

Dress of the Day: Samantha Pleet Dandy Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

samantha pleet dandy dressThere's nothing simpler than the shirtdress, and the Samantha Pleet Dandy shirtdress is certainly no exception. The striped cotton that comes in either green or red even comes "accessorized" with a wide sash that ties at the neck. The dress buttons all the way down the front, ends in shirttails, has ¾-length sleeves. If you've been thinking about trying the menswear look this fall, this shirtdress with "necktie" is a good way to ease into it.

Available at Refinery29 for $290.
