Fringe benefits at London's Graduate Fashion Week

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

If fashion is war, then consider Zandile Blay your embedded reporter. From fashion shows to stylish parties, she's there to cover it all -- from London to New York and everywhere in between. Read all about it from your favorite fashionista.

See, I sorta wish that was just a witty play on words. But fringes - and lots of them - were the detail of the day at the opening of Graduate Fashion Week. Leather fringes, straw fringes, cotton fringes, multi-colored fringes and beyond paraded down the runway on the first day of the event, which started on Sunday and ends to today. I am your girl in London for the week, as I check out the good, the bad and the fugly at what has become the largest event to promote student fashion designers across Europe.

Do not fear the brights: makeup

Kristen Seymour did a great post recently about how to wear neon.

When you're talking about something as fun as neon, why stop at clothes and jewelry? What's good for your body is good for your face.

Yes, neon make up. Pop Beauty Lid Neon eyeshadow, to be specific. Wow! Now those are brights!

As gorgeous as these colors are, please, use some restraint. Do not:
  • use more than one color at a time
  • match it exactly to your outfit
  • apply it in great sweeping wings, like Endora

And if you need more help, just follow the directions thoughtfully provided on the inside lid of the kit.

Snag yourself this awesome Pop Beauty set exclusively at Sephora for $22.

Gnarls Barkley video banned, for being awesome

Filed under: Style in the News, Videos, Celebrities with Style

The video for Gnarls Barkley's new single "Run" is so cool looking, it causes seizures -- literally. Apparently, MTV has announced that it won't air the video because it flunked the Harding Test, a set of guidelines set up to protect epileptic viewers from images that might trigger an incident. That's how trippy it is.

It's really too bad that the video is being held up by the strobing psychedelia, because it features a lot of great fashion nostalgia. Looks like director Chris Milk thought that a full-on 90's revival was the best way to compliment the track, yet all the looks fit together with the comeback of bright synthetic fabrics that's going on -- a very savvy choice by the video's costume designer.

Justin Timberlake makes a cameo as a geeky VJ, decked out in full on 90's style with an Eddie Murphy jacket and glasses. The video takes place on the set of a fictitious TV show, sorta like a Soul Train, but on a 60's soundstage. I see funky fresh parachute pants, bright colors and nylon -- I get excited thinking about 90's nostalgia.

How to wear neon (because it's like, totally back)

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans, Dresses

According to the Glamour Fashion Blog (and apparently Parisian women), neon colors are back -- specifically acid green. I don't know about you, but I remember this trend from the first time around. Fortunately, at that point, I was tan, blonde, thin ... and a kid, and therefore I didn't really care about whether it was flattering. I only cared that it was cool.

My sense of personal style has evolved (somewhat) since then, and while I'm actually kind of excited about neon colors being acceptable again, I'm also nervous about how to wear them. I'm pretty sure acid green isn't the most flattering color for me.

The return of day-glo nails

neon nail polishWhile out in the hot L.A. sun BBQing the day away, I noticed a set of neon pink fingernails. I was mesmerized. The nails were so unexpected, so 1980's ... I couldn't take my eyes off of them.

When someone has a fashion "do" moment, I feel that it is my civic duty as a fashion maven to go over and compliment them on their good work. As I congratulated her on her A+ nail color choice, she explained to me that this was her summer color and this was going to be her last manicure with the color.

Little did she know, she is ahead of the curve. Neon nails are the must have nails for Fall. Forget about your black satin, mauve's, and burgundy polishes because its time to have fun. Go for a neon pink, orange, even yellow if you dare.

I was so inspired I treated myself to a mani/pedi and went for a hot pink hue. They aren't as shocking as a her nails were (for all I know her polish was made in the 80's) but my color looks really nice. Something about bright and cheery nails that makes you feel like you snuck into mothers make up case and went to town. Unlike those days I didn't end up with polish down to my knuckles, so I think rocking this shade now is perfect timing.
