The beauty industry's new muse

Celebrities may not be clocking the major fashion advertisements like they use to (Hello, supermodels!), but they're making up for it with beauty campaigns.

A couple of weeks ago, Revlon announced Jennifer Connelly would be its new brand ambassador. Basically, this means she'll be supplied with an enviable amount of mascara and nail polish for the next few years. Oh yeah, she gets a big fat paycheck for doing so, too.

And just a few days ago, Condé Nast announced that British soul songstress, Duffy, would be the face of an exclusive new Nivea ad campaign. The ads will only run in Fashion Rocks, a super-glossy 16 page supplement that explores the relationship between fashion and music.

Duffy will also be performing alongside the likes of Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, and Mariah Carey in the Fashion Rocks special on CBS that airs on September 9th. Meanwhile, if you haven't picked-up Duffy's debut album Rockberry, then you must get on it. The ten track disc is full of beautiful love songs that are not the least bit cheesy and are made even better because of Duffy raspy voice.

Damn my eyes!

Filed under: Accessories, Men, Cosmetics, Skin Care, Steals and Deals

There are two sides to having puffy, black rings under your eyes. The obvious is that they make you look tired and unhealthy and are generally not something you enjoy on your face.

The second and less popular option is that of acceptance. This is where I have been living. I can't go to a store without someone commenting on how tired I look. Generally speaking, I am tired, so I try not to take offense. The thing is that some of the time I'm not, and hearing the unavoidable comment just deflates the balloon out of my day. It's like asking a heavy woman when she's due. That never goes over well.

That's not to say that fun can't be had. I'm not above making up excuses for my eyesore(s). The cute server at Chili's? As far she knows I have two black eyes from that scuffle in which I saved the honor/lives of many maidens/orphans/puppies. The lovely librarian thinks that I'm up drinking heavily and living the life of Hemingway. Well, hell, they're both right.

Except that I haven't been in a scuffle since college and I if I stay up drinking heavily I'm more likely to be in bed for 3 days rather than making chit-chat in my local public library.

I decided to go with the former (remember the former, like two chapters ago?). I've tried various eye treatments to reduce the puffy swelling and dark rings that have been camping under my eyes since the Bush years (it's all very recent). None of them have worked.

Currently I'm trying Revitalizing Eye Creme Q10 from NIVEA for Men ($11.95). I haven't noticed a change.

I'm a fan of NIVEA products and I really want this one to work, albeit to rid myself of my problem and not as some skin care fanboy.

That said, I'll use the bottle and hope that it takes more than a few weeks to see results. Most likely I'll be looking for something new. Maybe I'll meet it in a drugstore, maybe I'll find it online, or maybe I'll find myself passing make-up counters that aren't even on my way home.

In the meantime I'll be up drinking heavily and saving puppies.

Good-bye Cellulite

Nivea Body Good-bye Cellulite Patches
Getting your legs is summer shape can be as easy as a shave, some sunless tanner and for some a few extra hours in the gym. But for many women shaving, tanning, and squats are no match for cellulite.

According to Tyra Banks Nivea Body Good-bye Cellulite Patches are the cure to cellulite. Last week Tyra Banks had a whole show devoted to legs and the slew of problems that come with them (especially will summer right around the corner).

Tyra had four women with various leg shapes/ weight who had cellulite. They were all challenged to try the patches. I know television isn't always truthful but all of the women has amazing results. I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't have cellulite (please refrain from throwing rotten fruit at me) but if I did I would try this product -- that's how convincing the segment was.

Has anyone else tried this product? Is it the cure for cellulite? Inquiring minds want to know.

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Nivea Silky Shimmer Lotion

nivea silky shimmer lotionThough I was, in a previous lifetime, a slave to the tanning bed, I have long since changed my ways and have learned to love my pasty porcelain white skin. Even if you are naturally dark-skinned, it doesn't look right to be tanned in the dead of winter. Unless of course, everyone knows you go to St. Bart's for two weeks every December.

However, we still like to have that "glow," particularly this time of year, when we might be baring a bit of skin from beneath our slinky Holiday cocktail dresses. Resist the urge to use a self tanner or blow your budget on a Mystic tan. I simply exfoliate my entire body in the shower like I'm sanding a 2 by 4, then just before going out, I apply Nivea's Silky Shimmer Lotion. The lotion has a tint, but not enough to change your skin's color, and teeny tiny particles that reflect light. It's not the same as glitter. It's more like a shimmering dust.

At under $8 a bottle from any drugstore, it's a great way to enhance your skin's radiance (even if it's a pale radiance).

"For men" this and that

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Skin Care

I've been noticing for the past couple years that "for men" lines have been popping up everywhere. Where there was once only one type of face wash or one type of lotion, there now exists many different variations of essentially the same product.
At first glance, it seems that most of these products are simply a marketing ploy, used as a way to encourage more purchases, even if it is for the same soaps & salves. If it says "for men," we're more likely to buy it; you know how we can fall for advertising.

But I have to say, it's a pretty smart technique. Companies like Nivea, Clearasil, Dial and even Avon have gotten in on the "for men" phenomenon. By providing us guys with our own manly fragrances, manly packaging (see Dial's body wash that looks like an oil container), and marketing campaigns just for us, it lets us know that having good hygiene is A-okay.

And here's a few of my favorite products from various "for men" lines: energizing acne scrub from Clearasil; protective lotion from Nivea; and this hair and body wash from Avon.
