Sarah Palin vs. a Pitbull with lipstick

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics, Beauty Tips

Last night, during her speech at the Republican National Convention, Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin introduced the concept of "Hockey Moms" to a nation that was somewhat unfamiliar with the phenomena.

Apparently, these ladies are a tough bunch. So tough that they are often confused with pitbulls! We took a look, and she's right. It is hard to tell the difference! (Zing!)

But don't worry. Sarah gave us an excellent rule of thumb for figuring out which one you're dealing with: the pitbulls don't wear lipstick. Usually.

Be a Nominee: Get the Look from Atonement

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Atonement, the film adaptation of the new classic by Ian McEwan, tells a story of star-crossed love during World War II. One thing that did work out in the end was Keira Knightley's wardrobe- every costume was a winner, but who could possibly forget that stunning green dress from the pivotal love scene between Keira and James McAvoy? A to-die-for kelly green wisp of an evening gown has been called "the best movie costume of all time" (better than Scarlett O'Hara's curtain dress? Um.....) and was designed by British costume designer Jacqueline Durran.

While you may not be able to pick up the original for yourself a similarly colored (and easier to wear) everyday dress by Design History is available at Bluefly.com for $60.00. Soft , swept back hair and a smoky eye complete the look, and try a silver cuff or bangle for a film-inspired style.

Be a Nominee: Get the Look from Sweeney Todd

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Tim Burton wanted to create a dark world for his musical Sweeney Todd, and his grey skies against black buildings set the mood for the gory, bloody tale of a Barber's thirst for revenge. Helena Bonham Carter was luminous in gowns and corsets just as rich and dark as the London streets, with ladylike details such as lace and fringe.

You can feel a little dark and sexy in a BCBG Max Azria burgundy lace trim chiffon halter dress for $219.99 from Bluefly.com. You don't have to be pale as a ghost to make Helena's look work for you, but tousled curls are always fun, or for straight hair, try a funky updo. Both look great with a smoky eye and a nude lip. Finish out the homage with silver jewelry with black bead accents, like these asymmetrical cross earrings for $6.50 from Claire's. The black and silver is dramatic but the small size keeps them from being a weird-girl-in-art-class Don't.
