Oscar Coverage: Battle of the one shouldered dress -- Katherine Heigl vs. Hilary Swank

Katherine Heigl and Hilary Swank both wore one shouldered gowns on the red carpet. And they weren't the only ones. Everyone showed up tonight in the asymmetrical silhouette! I was surprised we didn't see any guys wearing one shoulder tuxes.

Katherine gets a few bonus points since she went red and one shouldered. That's like killing two trendy birds with one stone since red was definitely the color of the night. It also helps that she was born for old school Hollywood glamor. Her short wavy hair and big earrings perfectly complete the look!

Hilary decided to do the one shoulder in black. Her gown was a bit more flowing and had more intricate details than Katherine's. She looks fab, but she also looks, how do I put this delicately, hungry.

I'm going with Katherine as the winner of the one shoulder face off. Mostly just because I can't focus on Hilary's dress long enough to decide if it's better or not. When I look at her all I can see are the bones popping out of her chest. Eat a sandwich, woman!

The cold shoulder: A solution

Just in time for it to be freezing cold, one-shoulder dresses have come back into style. Check out this pretty little black dress from Roland Mouret:

There are a number of big winners from Kate Moss for Topshop, as well.

But what to do about that cold shoulder? You could add a wrap, but that would sort of defeat the purpose.

I suggest a parrot. Perhaps a blue or red mackaw to match your shoes with a little black dress. Or white, for the fashion forward bride:

Lonely Polly wants a shoulder.
Pirate-chic. A parrot can be a friend for life, and entertain your dinner date.

As its talons pierce your tender skin and the hot blood rushes to that icy shoulder, you will say to yourself "damn, that Annie Scott is a genius!"

Spring 2008 Trend Alert: One shoulder dresses

one shoulder dressFred Flintstone would be proud because the one shoulder look is back in style. It's been a long time since this silhouette has been in vogue; so long I was almost certain it wasn't coming back (at least not in my lifetime).

The good news is you are no longer doomed to sport those lycra one shoulder numbers, a la Kelly Bundy on 'Married with Children', because there are so many better options out there. The one shoulder dress has dropped the sleazy appeal it once had and has upgraded into a chic and more comfortable look. Wear it tight (but not too tight) in a jersey knit or wear it loose and flowing in silk.

The one shoulder look is guaranteed to take over for last years' baby doll dresses, so get a spot ready in your closet.

Dress of the Day: Graeme Black One Shoulder Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

graeme black one shoulder dressGiven that Graeme Black's designer Jonathan Reed is a former interior designer, it makes sense that the one shoulder dress has an architectural feel with its assymetrical one shoulder shape and diagonal cream and black brushstroke stripes. The dress is made of cotton and features a short side slit at them hem that falls to the knee. We don't necessarilt love the shoes it's shown with, but can absolutely see a pair of black peep-toe slingbacks with this dress.

Graeme Black's One Shoulder Dress is available from Neiman Marcus for $1995.
