Lookbook.nu gives stylemakers a fashion diary

While we do love million-dollar fashion spreads in magazines, they're rarely as inspiring as shots of street style. (Without the benefit of A-list photographers, fussed-over lighting and a team of professional stylists, plenty of people dress quite well in day-to-day life, thank you.)

Lookbook.nu offers an ode to just those individuals. The online style diary, where members (like Lina, pictured above) upload their DIY fashion pics, recalls a cheekier, younger version of The Sartorialist. Populated by self-described artists, students, lovers and nobodies, Lookbook's San Franciscan founders call it a "social experiment in style." (We call it completely addicting to browse.)

With trendsetters from Estonia, Berlin, the Philippines, and Stockholm--among others--featured, you might even learn something about geography while you're at it.

Breaking: Viktor & Rolf say 'no' to Paris Fashion Week

Filed under: Style in the News

Say it ain't so! After everyone one's favorite glitter-infused fashion duo Heatherette called it quits on showing under the Bryan Park tents, another fashion twosome is also backing away from presenting their stellar looks on the runway this season as well.

Avant-garde label Viktor & Rolf will not, and we repeat, will not be presenting their spring '09 collection in Paris next week. Instead, the designers will unveil their new designs in an online showcase on October 2nd.

According to WWD, "the Web presentation at www.viktor-rolf.com would employ the latest technologies and allow for "guests" to access the backstage area, to see hair and makeup, and to pop in on the designers for fittings." So now everyone can pretend like they've just scored front-row tickets to a Paris fashion show from the comforts of their home.

Everyone now: Yay!

The Limited now knows no limits

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing

We've been shopping at The Limited for years. They tend to have something for everyone -- from casual to dressy, modest to va-va-voom. However, the only way to purchase their clothes was to go to the store. Seriously -- The Limited didn't have ecommerce available ... until now.

You can now go online and shop to your heart's content. Look for versatile pieces, like this ridiculously cute Ruffle Shirt Dress (wear it now with peep toes, in the winter with boots and a cardigan, and again in the spring with strappy heels). It's just $69.50, so not only will you get plenty of opportunities to wear it, but you'll have money left over to accessorize (and we've got the accessories you need from The Limited in the gallery!)!

Take the pain out of online shopping with FreeShipping.org

As gas prices rise, the appeal of online shopping grows. There's no driving to the mall, no driving from one store to another to compare prices -- all it takes is a computer, a credit card, and a few clicks of the mouse. There's just one drawback -- the shipping costs.

Think about it -- how often have you found a great deal (or just a great item) online, and gone through the checkout only to find that you're being charged $10 or so for shipping? For that amount, you could drive to the local branch of a store and buy it in person. So what's a savvy shopper to do?

Check out FreeShipping.org, of course! You can shop by brand or category through over 800 name-brand stores to find free shipping coupons. That means you can get free shipping from JCPenney, Macy's, Target, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Best Buy, and many more. So, no matter what you're shopping for, you're likely to find a way to get it shipped to you for free!

Shop Alexander McQueen in your pajamas

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

What could be better than shopping for designer duds in your pajamas (imported silk lounging pajamas, of course)? Alexander McQueen is making that possible -- not with a flagship store slumber party, but with a new online store.

Tobi.com wants to help you bring out your inner Carrie Bradshaw

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

How many times have you watched Sex and the City and thought, "Boy, I'd love wear clothes like that with as much chutzpah as (insert favorite SATC gal here), but I don't even know where to begin!"? It can be intimidating to go shopping on your own when you're looking for a signature style, whether it's your very own or "borrowed" from your favorite SATC character.

Tobi.com wants to make it a little easier for you to dress with serious style. They offer a personal stylist feature that will give you the guidance you need to dress like Carrie, Miranda, Samantha or Charlotte. If you're still not sure, check out our gallery to see some of their suggestions for character-based ensembles.

Zappos no longer cares about your budget

We have long loved Zappos for having great features, like 110% price matching and free overnight shipping (you know, for those times when you have to have those shoes tomorrow or you will just die).

Alas, the love affair is over. Zappos has dropped their price protection and free overnight shipping, saying that they want to concentrate more on customer service rather than discounts.

Coolest. Glasses. Ever.

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Is that a home theater system on your head or are you just happy to see us? If you chose anything but "both" then keep reading. We've got something to show you.

The Vuzix iWear may look like something off of Star Trek, but it's much cooler. That's right, we said something was cooler than Star Trek (see Battlestar Galactica), deal with it.

This "face-furniture" as the good people at Firebox call it, provides "a fully immersive audiovisual assault" that replicates watching a 62" screen from a safe distance. Really. It's like watching a huge big screen on your face.

Blood is the New Black: T-shirts

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

There will be blood, and possibly some sweat (not shop!) and tears. These t-shirts from Blood is the New Black are yet another example of wearable art where couture is the canvas. What's great about Blood is the New Black is how they give equal time to both the art and the artist, which we like.

This is truly discount code heaven

Victoria's SecretThis is one of those sites that I wish I had discovered earlier, sparing myself hundreds of frustrating hours trying to dig through discount codes in my Inbox. Retail Me Not is an online, user-submitted collection of discount codes for various online stores, from Papa John's to American Eagle to Walgreens. Although the success rate of each code is rarely ever 100%, there's no telling how much you can save if you just give the codes a try. I just tried this out with a test shopping spree on the Victoria's Secret and I could have bought an alarming amount of underwear and lipgloss for next to nothing (by lingerie standards).

This is definitely one of my favorite finds of the year. Also check out another site from the Retail Me Not creators: Bug Me Not. It's a huge collection of usernames and passwords open for public use on websites that usually ask you to register to see certain material (like the New York Times and YouTube).

Goodwill goes online

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style for a Cause

Over the years, I've scored incredible loot at the Goodwill store in my hometown: a black leather Coach handbag for $3, a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress for $6 and a pair of heels from the same DVF label for a cool $4. I have to say, however, that the only drawback of shopping at Goodwill is actually shopping at Goodwill. (I don't know about you, but I've seen enough Little House on the Prairie dresses to last me a lifetime.)

Luckily, Goodwill is taking its extra special loot online with live auctions, a la Ebay. After a quick scan of the merchandise, everything seems reasonably priced and in good-to-fair condition. Of course, like the in-store experience, you still have to sort through a lot of crap to get to the worthwhile goods. There's a black leather Coach bag for $21 and a Burberry coat for $31.02. Last but not least, there is an amazing feathered cloche hat for $10.00.
