The Scented Opera Smells Out

A smell of a show! Photo courtesy of the Guggenheim

A high-falutin' opera from the man who brought us Ralph Lauren Polo Blue and Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce? That's right!

Earlier this week, Christophe Laudamiel, one of the industry's top perfumers (or "noses," as us perfumistas call them), completed the final sold out performance of his "Green Aria: A ScentOpera," a 30-minute opera accompanied by 30-plus scents, or as Laudamiel lovingly calls them, "characters."

In a darkened theater at the Guggenheim in NYC, the audience was treated to six-second blasts of a fragrance via a personal "scent microphone" affixed to the seats. Each smell helped tell the story about the tension between nature and technology.

I want that! Taylor Momsen in Marchesa

Taylor Momsen! WOW!

The last few times Taylor has been on the carpet, we noted the Gossip Girl seemed to be channeling Kate Moss. A little change of pace for the opening of the Met's 125th opera season party and baam! – sophisticate city.

And the fact that the dress is Marchesa, which basically makes anyone look perfect, doesn't hurt.

PS - Can you believe this girl is only 15? Blown. A. Way.

Marchesa folded ribbon gown, Bergdorf Goodman, $990

Quicksilver boardshorts, nothing boring about them

Summertime, and the living is easy. Fish are jumping, and the waves are high. What?

Okay, maybe Porgy didn't surf and Gershwin was probably more concerned with lullabies and crap games than hanging ten, but the opening line to 'Summertime' always makes us crave the sun on our face and sand on our feet. We like to cover the parts in between with boardshorts.

Quicksilver has released their 2008 collection of boardshorts and like the lyrics above, they make us want to embrace the pending arrival of summer and the sand and the stuff.

StyleFoul: British opera singers

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

British women are known for many things, but taste in clothes is not one of them. (Don't get defensive, people -- neither are American women!) To illustrate this point, I'll like to take the opportunity to bring in some photos from the Classical Brit Awards.

For those of us living on this side of the pond, the Classical Brit Awards recognizes achievements of classical musicians and the growth of classical music sales in the UK. So as you are looking at these photos, remember, these are classical musicians -- opera singers, pianists, chamber musicians -- not your run of the mill British pop star hoping an especially provocative outfit will land her a following with international music fans.

First is Sarah Brightman, whom many of you all will know from her performance as Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera. Based on her red platform shoes and feathery brothel dress, she's obviously campaigning for the title roll in Andrew Lloyd Weber's new musical, The Call-girl of the Opera.

Here's Katherine Jenkins. She is an opera singer who was nominated for the best album award. Needless to say she didn't win, so I'm sure Diana Ross will be expecting her trusty old turquoise jumpsuit back, stat.
