Yummie Tummie smooths away your muffin top

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Product Reviews, Flatter Your Figure

By now, we know that when Oprah says something is good, it's great. Once again she hit the nail on the head when she and Heidi Klum picked Yummie Tummie to be one of Oprah's Top Picks.

Yummie Tummie is shapewear, but it's incredibly wearable. Unlike Spanx, which are vitally necessary but let's admit it, painful, Yummie Tummie tops are comfortable. At the same time, they smooth and control muffin top in a way that we hadn't realized was possible.

Debbie Phelps signs deal with Chico's

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

In a triumph for lovers of bright patterns and matching jewelry, Debbie Phelps, mother of Olympic Champion Michael Phelps, middle school vice principal and expert accessorizer, now has her own six-figure deal with the Chico's clothing chain.

As part of the deal she will appear in their marketing materials, including the catalog and probably the website. She will also be dressed by Chico's for appearances. Watch for her on Oprah!

The Chico's fashion philosophy is a bit flowing and embellished for some. As you can see in the Debbie Phelps Collection (that we posted about last week), which highlights some of Debbie's looks from the Olympics, every print can benefit from a belt, and statements earrings are always paired with matching chunky necklaces.

Michelle Obama's style secret: Maria Pinto

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We're enjoying all of the Wall Street Journal coverage about Michelle Obama and her sartorial choices. Last week it was about what she wore on The View. This week's Michelle missive reveals the name of the designer behind the purple "fist bump" sheath dress, and so many of Michelle's great looks: Chicago-based designer Maria Pinto.

Oprah gets cast in a flattering light, literally

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Over the years, there's no doubt that Oprah Winfrey's look has changed dramatically -- you can check her out right now at StyleList's Look of the Day. Her hair, her weight, her wardrobe -- they've all been switched up on a yearly basis. But, has she gone under the knife to make more drastic changes?

Many experts say no -- as a matter of fact, although the look of her face has changed somewhat throughout the years (most notably, her schnoz), it's more a matter of makeup and lighting than surgical intervention. Because, let's be real, folks -- how many of our faces don't look considerably different now than they did in the '80s?

The Vogue Diet

Filed under: Style in the News

vogue coverThe Vogue Diet ... What is that like water, asparagus, and chewing gum? Nah not so much, it goes more like this "lose some weight or you can't be on my cover."

That's exactly what happened to Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. The two designers received a call from a Vogue editor who suggested they get on a diet and see a personal trainer. Kate and Laura were actually fine with it because they wanted to get healthier anyways (uh huh). The 'Vogue Diet' consisted of four months of personal training and a meal delivery service.

The fashionable diet paid off as they lost a combined total of 50 pounds. They even kept a diet diary that will appear in the April issue. Of course Vogue got a lot of heat for asking the sisters to diet, and this isn't the first time. Back in 1998 Oprah actually agreed to drop 20 pounds before her cover shoot.

I don't know what to think about this. On one hand if Vogue paid for all of my weight loss needs and I kinda wanted to drop some weight anyways it wouldn't be a big deal. However on the other hand ... Vogue is straight up calling people fat. What do you all think?

Oprah gives away Louboutins

Christian Louboutin - No Prive 942 Platform Slingbacks
It's days like these where I smack myself on the head and say " Why don't I go sit in the audience of The Oprah Show?"

The other day on Oprah's 'Making it Big' episode she was showcasing some of her favorite products that have "made it big." Some of those products were Coldstone Creamery ice cream, Carmex lip balm and Christian Louboutin shoes.

We all know how generous Oprah can be when it comes giving away her favorite products, so naturally she was giving stuff away to her audience members. Now I could care less about a $2 tub of Carmex but what I would have been excited to receive was the ice cream Christian Louboutin shoes.

Oprah and Christian Louboutin gave one lucky audience member a pair of open-toe tiger print patent leather shoes. These shoes are a great way to spice up a little black dress or to give a pair of jeans an extra bit on oomph.

If you weren't that lucky audience member you can purchase these shoes for around $600 at Saks. Just be warned: Since these Louboutins were showcased on 'Oprah,' they're probably sold out already and going for a million dollars on eBay.

Wanna be on Oprah or Tyra? Better look good.

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style

What could possibly be better than watching Oprah, Tyra, or Rachel Ray on TV? Being there in person, of course!

But before you can laugh, cry, and shout "You go, girl!" with a couple hundred of your fellow daytime-TV-obsessed compatriots, you may need to take a long, hard look at your wardrobe. It turns out all of the major talk show divas have more in common than good looks and matriarchal sass -- according to WWD, each one insists on a dress code for their audience.

Tyra and Rachel say no to flip-flops, shorts, white t-shirts, velour sweatshirts, sneakers, ripped jeans and tanked tops. Ladies sitting in on Martha Stewart should think "dressy and fun,"' while guys should shoot for something you could wear to your local country club.

So that's why everyone in the audience of those shows looks frumpy and lame!

According to producers, these guidelines keep the audience looking "camera-ready." But I have a sneaking suspicion that they just don't want anyone dressing better than the host.

Who's most at risk from being upstaged by a fashionista in the audience? Check out our gallery to see which of these daytime TV icons has the best fashion sense, then vote for your favorite!

Shop Oprah

Filed under: Stores We Love, Celebrities with Style

Oprah Winfrey's name on anything seems to give it extra clout and allure to buyers, now Oprahphiles will have a shop all their own. The first ever Oprah-branded retail store is across street from her Harpo Studios in Chicago. Construction has just begun and no opening date has been announced. The store will be full of Oprah-logo merchandise such as totes and workout gear that are already for sale online in Oprah's boutique as well as books in Oprah's book club and other items Oprah chooses such as such as African baskets and art. The store will also include a small cafe. It seems like this is planned to be just a one-off store but could we perhaps be facing an empire of Oprah stores across the land?

Bad news about (RED)

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

Despite having big names like Oprah, Bono and Giorgio Armani rooting for the cause, the (RED) campaign has been turned out to be well, a complete failure. According web reports, despite having blown close to $100 million in advertising, marketing and branding, (RED) has only raised $18 million in funds for Africa.

The folks at (RED) say they are committed to keeping the dream alive, and that they hope to raise that number to $25 million in the next few months. But still, raising $25 million when you spent $100 million in advertising seems like a laughable proposition. Sure, awareness means something, but if (RED) really wanted to effect change, they should have just sent the cash to Africa in the first place.

Hindsight is 20/20, but someone should have seen that one coming.

[Correction: Consulting company in charge of (RED) contacted me to let me know that this was erroneous info. Apologies for the mistake. Guess you can't trust everything you read on the internet.... AM]

Charlotte's Web clothes for grown-ups

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Books

Yesterday, Oprah Winfrey had the cast of the new live action version of Charlotte's Web on her show. Winfrey and stars such as Julia Roberts and Cedric the Entertainer play the voices of some of the animals in the movie. At the end of the show they had a model wearing this outfit, part of a line of clothing that ties in with the movie. Since this is a children's book I would have expected perhaps a line of cute "dress-like-Charlotte" clothes for girls. Instead, there is a web-themed line for grown-ups.

The set shown here is a cashmere drawstring pants and a cardigan with crystal buttons decorated with a metallic flower print on the front and a web print at back. It might be cute for kids but it is in adult sizes and because it is cashmere sells for a not-so-cozy $300. There is also a Charlotte's Web hoodie. The big spiderweb on the back makes it seem vaguely goth but the Wilber, Gussy the Goose, and Charlotte charms at zipper are childishly cutesy. It sells for $60. You can check out the whole line at Shop Intuition. The only piece I like is the simple white tank with the black web design. Still I question the wisdom of the entire line -- is it meant to be a retro, nostalgia type thing or are there really many adults who are deeply into Charlotte's Web?

Naomi to defend herself on Oprah

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

As Madonna proved last month, one of the best tactics for dealing with bad publicity is to make a confessional, candid appearance on Oprah. Jennifer Aniston did it, and so did Tom Cruise (we all know how that one turned out). Now, supermodel Naomi Campbell has agreed to appear on the Oprah show later this month to defend herself against the string of assault charges she has faced over the past year.

I'm usually not one for the celebrity sit-down on the Oprah show, but I am dying to see this episode. I'll be really interested to see how Oprah treats Naomi. As much as I admire the O. for being a truly sympathetic human being, I just hope she doesn't get all "Oh, poor you, Naomi!" on us. I don't know about you, but I definitely don't have an ounce of tolerance for a raging, self-important diva who thinks throwing her toys at her domestics is the correct way to deal with her problems.
