Shake it like a Polaroid picture? Not anymore

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Celebrities with Style

First the dodo and now this. My childhood is falling apart (please note the dodo was actually gone long before my childhood).

Polaroid is going to focus on flat panel televisions and digital photography and in the process will be laying off 150 workers. What does this mean to us, the non-Polaroid employees? It means that future generations will eye instant photography with the same awe and doubt formerly saved for the likes of 8-tracks and corduroy shorts. Another piece of Americana is now history. On the bright side, this may have a positive effect on any pending eBay sales of said products. How's that for a nice spin?

I wonder how André 3000 feels about this. Will every Outkast concert have to be stopped mid Hey Ya! and the art of shaking 'it' like a Polaroid picture explained? Or will we leave such knowledge to the tall tales of previous generations? Or Google?

It's a bittersweet trip, this progress.

Style icon: Outkast's Big Boi

Though Andre 3000 usually gets all the credit for being the more stylish half of Outkast, attention is long overdue for Big Boi.

It's the pair's recent film Idlewild that's forced me to re-examine my preference for Andre 3000. Set in the Prohibition-era South, the film features Big Boi as a small-time hustler and musician named Rooster. While Andre 3000 plays the film's understated (and noble) hero, it's Big Boi who steals the show.

And more importantly, it's Big Boi who gets to wear a number of feathery and furry outfits. Sure, the musical numbers are cool, but Big Boi's outfits alone make it worth the price of admission.

With André 3000's new film Idlewild hitting the theaters this month, I thought that now would be a great time to spend some time talking about why I (humbly) think 3000 is the best dressed man in the world.

  • Reason 1: The plaid. Sure, he dresses like Fred Sanford, but he does it with such flair.
  • Reason 2: The facial hair. Is it a chin strap? Is it a soul patch? Whatever it is, I love it, and I usually hate facial hair.
  • Reason 3: The hats. Anybody can pull of a fedora (see Avril Lavigne), but can they pull of a kelly green turban with matching tie and sweater? I didn't think so.
  • Reason 4: The ascot. Sure, he's dressed like Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island, but I bet you if 3000 landed on the island Ginger and Mary Ann would be shaking it like a Polaroid picture.
