The Worst of the 2009 Golden Globes - StyleFoul!

Filed under: Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Red Carpet Trends

We love awards season, because it gives us so much material to work with! Last night at the Golden Globes we were by turns impressed, bored and of course, horrified. Since the horrors are the most fun to discuss, let's get right to those.

Helena Christensen stars in sexy Agent Provocateur video

Filed under: Swimwear and Lingerie, Celebrities with Style

Okay, there aren't any hooks, or even amputees, but something about this video of Helena Christensen -- in what we believe are leather garters -- simply screams "Pirate!" Sexy Pirate, that is.

It's probably the Adam and the Ants jacket, plus the sword, plus the red lace pasties someone is "wearing." And the pirate music certainly adds something to the buccaneer ambiance.

And we mustn't forget the panties made of black silk ribbons. Yes, this clip for the new Agent Provocateur Pirate lingerie line is a regular sexy pirate stew. Pure perfection for all you current and former lingerie models who want to enjoy Halloween year-round!

We have to admit, as sexy as this little video is, the longer version on the Agent Provocateur site is...wow. it's sort of interactive. And Helena, at 39, totally still has it.

Debra Davenport's Spring 2009 collection at Los Angeles Fashion Week

Debra Davenport's Spring 2009 collection, shown during L.A. Fashion Week, was exceedingly wearable. It was also a bit scattered. Davenport took cues from Cynthia Rowley and Nanette Lepore, featuring floral, citrus and vibrant green fabrics. But the through line was lost somewhere between 1950s Euro chic and lady pirate.

Today is National Talk Like A Pirate Day

Filed under: Holiday Style, Accessories, Clothing, Men, Get the Look

Are you prepared? Do you have your outfit? Stuffed parrot? Eye patch? We certainly hope so, because today is National Talk Like a Pirate Day, and you might seem a little ridiculous if you failed to adequately accessorize your performance.

You think we're kidding? This is a cultural movement, with a website, a book, and best of all, an official song.

We're torn, because the whole ditty is pretty priceless, but this might be our favorite verse:

T' me,
Yo, Ho, Yo, Ho,
It's "Talk Like A Pirate" Day!
When laptops are benches God gave us for wenches,
And a sail ain't a low price to pay!
When timbers are shivered and lillies are livered
And every last buckle is swashed,
We'll abandon our cars for a shipfull of ARRRs
And pound back the grog till we're sloshed. Yo ho ....

Who says Renn Faire people have all the fun?

In the gallery, ensembles to make you Captain Hook, Jack Sparrow and of course...Sexy Pirate Wenches!

Stylefoul: the paisley bandana

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

I am not opposed to all bandanas. There are certain people who wear bandanas (i.e. tennis players Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal) who look perfectly fine and can pull it off. There's a difference, though: they wear solid-colored Nike bandanas that are folded up into more of a headband. The headbands are functional.

Then, there's the paisley bandana that has been around for quite some time. It's like a handkerchief, but is usually folded in some way in order to be worn on the head.

Yesterday, I saw a mid-20s guy strolling down Broad Street sporting a paisley bandana on his head. I immediately looked down to see if he was carrying a motorcycle helmet (motorcycle riders are allowed to wear them), but he wasn't. I looked at my watch for the date -- maybe he was dressing up for Halloween? Negative.

It was at this point that I realized you're going to look very silly wearing a paisley bandana on your head these days. So, to sum up, unless you're a pirate or a cowboy, the paisley bandana should be off limits.

Dolce and Gabbana's 1980s inspiration

Filed under: Runway Trends, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

dolce and gabbanaWhere have I seen this Dolce and Gabbana fall look before? Certainly it's part of the pirate chic trend but this reminds me of something else too, another pirate-inspired style moment. Those buttoned boots, those epaulettes, a look somewhere between dandy and debached. It can only be the look of 1980s New Wave singer Adam Ant. All this lovely young lady needs is a white stripe across her face and a lot more eyeliner and voila, doppelganger (although I suspect Mr. Ant wouldn't be caught dead in those awkward shorts). Does everything this fall lead back to the 1980s?
