French minister loses bet - has to wear pink Crocs

Filed under: Style in the News, Shoes

(Think that's bad? Click the photo to see more celebs - and one president - caught in Crocs!)

Olympic fashions were a hot topic during the run-up to the games in Beijing, and apparently the ripples haven't quite subsided. Before the Olympics, Roselyne Bachelot -- France's Minister of Health, Youth, and Sports -- made a bet with her country's team. If they come home from Beijing with 40 medals, she'll wear pink Crocs to work. Well, the French team came back with exactly enough to humiliate their minister: 7 golds, 16 silvers and 17 bronzes.

True to her word, Bachelot wore the fugly pink clodhoppers to work at the presidential palace in one of the snobbiest fashion capitals in the world. While it's funny to see a government minister wear Crocs in Paris, we don't think the stakes were high enough. Especially when you consider that the Olympic team from New Zealand had to wear the infamous clogs as part of their outfits in the opening ceremony.

Next time, the Olympic team needs to up the ante. Crocs heels? Shoe-pants, maybe?

Carla Bruni is a FLILF

Leader of the French, President Sarkozy, is a seriously lucky man. He's dating a former super model! Carla Bruni is hot. And I decided we need a term for women like her, so I came up with FLILF. You know like a MILF except it's First Lady I'd Like to BLEEP instead of Mom I'd Like to BLEEP. Yes, very clever, I know.

Politicians seem to be lucky enough to get themselves women that would be way out of their league on a normal basis. I'm not saying Sarkozy isn't cute, he is. But, cute enough to date a super model? I'm not so sure about that. He looks like my grandpa, but she definitely doesn't look like my grandma!

And we don't have to go all the way across the big pond to find more examples of this trend. Looking right in America's backyard you'll see that plenty of politicians here have figured out the magic formula too. Take Fred Thompson, for example. Jeri Thompson, the well endowed blond he calls his wife, looks young enough to be his daughter! John McCain's wife Cindy is pretty much a babe too, and rumor has it even that's not good enough for him. He's got a little something on the side with a different girl who's supposed to be hot as well(although I couldn't find any pictures, sorry). Even Elizabeth Kucinich, Dennis' wife, is a beautiful modelesque redhead who stands about a foot taller than him.

So ladies, what is it about politicians and power that gets our panties in a bunch? How do these averagely attractive men attract the likes of the Carla Bruni's of the world?

Who's the most stylish presidential candidate?

Seeing as this is a style blog, and public officials aren't exactly known for their fashion flair, there's generally no reason for us to cover politics. However, recently it seems there's been a concerted effort amongst high-profile politicians to look cool, George Bush's recent crocs fiasco and John Edwards' hair combing incident notwithstanding.

Hillary Clinton, for instance, in an attempt to reach out to the young and hip, recently held a contest, asking followers to choose her campaign song. Both the contest itself, and her choice to announce the winner in a Soprano's video spoof, got her a lot of attention from the young and hip.

Now Barack Obama -- Clinton's main competition in the Democratic party -- has had his campaign materials featured on a design blog. NOTCOT, a site normally dedicated to fashion-forward clothing and novel new gadgets, was impressed with the candidate's stylish t-shirts, buttons and stickers -- and for good reason. Normally candidates opt for a simple red, white and blue motif with their cheesy slogan italicized at the bottom -- but it looks like someone in Obama's camp actually put some thought into the visual aesthetic of his campaign.

I'm not saying that he's the best guy for the job necessarily, but with marketing material like this, it's no wonder the ladies love Barack Obama.
