MAKE UP FOR EVER HD

Let's face it. No matter how much we'd like to believe, celebs aren't always red carpet perfect. And with the television industry's recent switch to high-definition, hiding one's imperfections just got even tougher. But thanks to MAKE UP FOR EVER's HD Complexion line – which includes foundations, concealers and a loose powder - stars can look flawless despite the pore-magnifiying zoom effect.

So what does Make Up For Ever's complexion perfectors have that other cosmetic brands don't? It's all about the micro-particles that scatter light to visibly perfect your skin.

"In HD, everything is magnified, including make up. Therefore, formulations need to use microscopic ingredients to create the invisible coverage that is necessary for HD formats," said Dany Sanz, Creator and Artistic Director, MAKE UP FOR EVER. "The HD Complexion line utilizes special micro-particles in each innovative formulation to create make up that is imperceptible onscreen, in photos and in real life!"

At the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, everyone from Cyndi Lauper to Jordin Sparks hit up the Grammy Style Studio to get done up with products from the HD Complexion line. For scenes from the studio, click through the gallery.

Tip of the day: Cosmetic lifespans

Filed under: Cosmetics, Style Tip of the Day

Many of us gals have been the victim of expired cosmetics. Here's the scenario. After seeing pics of that smokin' gloss we used to wear in high school, we rush to our beauty closet only to open the tube to a rank stank that we don't understand. Most beauty products do not have any smell, or if they do, it is very faint. If you start noticing some product BO, it's because that favorite gloss is dying a slow, bacteria-invested death in that dark, tightly sealed tube. Once the product has peaked, it can cause some pretty gross irritations or infections if used. To avoid all of the above, follow these general toss time guidelines.

Estee Lauder Cherished compact

Another great compact, this one is the latest from Estee Lauder and far less pricey than the last one I found myself smitten by. The Cherished powder compact is a pink, gold and white compact with a cheery swirled design. It is filled and refillable with Lucidity Pressed Powder and sells for $60.

Coral Chantecaille compact

As I've mentioned before, I'm absolutely smitten with elegant compacts. Chantecaille, which has created beautiful butterfly powders that have caught my eye, has come up with something truly amazing. Their new limited-edition compact designed by Jay Strongwater is a work of art. The exterior features a coral relief decoration. Inside there is a coral designed powder and a flat, semi-circle natural hair brush. The Vitamin C-infused powder has hydrating properties. The compact sells for an amazing $420, but the purchase of the compact does support "Reefs of Hope" a project of the Pew Institute for Ocean Science to mitigate the effects of pollution and global warming on the world's coral reefs. So out of my price range but ooh la la gorgeous.

A dose of spring for your makeup bag

It's been a little while since I highlighted a pretty palette but in this time when we are all waiting for spring to make its glorious appearance we could all use a little floral pick me up. Clinique's Fresh Bloom is a pinky blush available in floral shades of posy, almond blossom, peony and plum poppy. Best of all, it's shaped like a beautiful flower. It looks to have three different colors, the darkest in the center of the flower and the lightest in the background. It looks like it would be difficult to use each color individually (especially when using a standard blush brush) but the overall effect of the compact is adorable. It sells for $29.50.

Missoni compact, another one too pretty to use

My obsession with gorgeous compacts continues. Check out this latest beauty. Its a pressed powder in shades of bronze, pink and orange and that distinctive zig-zag gives away its origin right away, it's a Missoni. The colors can be blended on one brush for a light glow or the colors can be worn individually on cheeks and eyes. The orange compact comes with a contoured brush in a signature Missoni pouch and sells for $70.

Makeup too pretty to use

I have a weakness for gorgeous makeup palettes. You know, the ones that are so ornate and pretty that actually using them feels like a crime. Beauty Addict turned me on to the latest, a lovely flower design from Yves St. Laurent. The collector's edition Opium compact has a black lacquer case that opens to display a flower design done in four shades of ultrafine multi-use powder. It sells for $55. For other gorgeous palettes check out this DiorLucky palette, Armani's modernist Eye Mania, Chantecaille's beautiful butterflies, and my favorite, the Chanel Coromandel which was inspired by screens owned by Coco Chanel. For a drugstore beauty queen version, there's also Physician's Formula which does a few cute pressed powders and bronzers.
