Confessions of a Shopaholic trailer

Filed under: Style in the News

We loved Isla Fisher as the psycho, stalkeresque Gloria in "Wedding Crashers," and we love the fact that she is married to the iconoclast that is Sacha Baron Cohen.

This winter, Fisher gets her first, much-deserved starring role as a likable ditz with a serious charge-it problem in "Confessions of a Shopaholic." (Based on the bestselling book of the same name.)

The trailer just went up this week, and while the story looks a bit stereotypically chick flick-ish, we'll probably go just to witness the wardrobe...and for the scene where Fisher's character bum rushes a cute guy with the line, "You speak Prada?"

Prada's Fallen Shadows video

Created by visual effects master James Lima, Prada's new "Fallen Shadows" video brings to life the Autumn/Winter 2008 collection with an animation sequence that references surrealist artists like Dali.

A little bit creepy--thanks to the out-of-place Antony and the Johnsons soundtrack--and a little bit dreamy.

Shoes of the day - Prada peep toe pumps

These grey suede heels by Prada are not the least bit demure, in fact, they're full of bold details befitting this fall's biggest shoe trend - the architectural shoe.

Model.Live Episode 2: Cato says good-bye

Filed under: Style in the News

Last month, Vogue announced it would be teaming up with IMG models to present an online TV series that followed three new models -- Cato Van Ee, Madeline Kragh, and Austria Alcantara -- as they made their way to New York for fashion week, documenting all of the trials and tribulations that come with trying to make yourself stand out in a very competitive industry.

The series debuted on August 19 and all of the episodes thus far have showed the models saying good-bye to their loved ones in order to beging that long and arduous journey known as Fashion Week. Cato, the Holland beauty who walked Miu Miu and Prada exclusively last season, has parents that are, rightfully so, worried about what the modeling industry has in store for their daughter.

Her mother, in fact, would prefer if she didn't become famous because "she doesn't know too many people who are famous that are happy." In this clip, watch as her buddies throw her a farewell party and her parents lament on the risks of becoming a model.

Prada store in west Texas does $0.00 in sales

Filed under: Style in the News, Green Fashion

According to its quarterly reports, this Prada store in Marfa, TX has failed to make a single transaction since its grand opening in 2005. While this would usually mean bad news for the store's horribly unsuccessful manager -- this store doesn't have one, so it's no big deal. In fact, even though it's stocked with thousands of dollars of merchandise, it's not really a Prada store at all. It's an art installation conceived by Berliners Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset.

"Made of earth-friendly earth, this biodegradable adobe building will slowly melt back into the landscape once the looters have removed the merchandise. The slow fade to oblivion will provide countless hours of conversation for motorists driving through West Texas. Starting with simple questions like "What the hell was that?" it's sure to inspire more thoughtful dialogue - like "When is advertising art?" or "When is art advertising?" Or (for really long trips) "What is art, anyway?"

If you've happened to drive through this desolate stretch of west Texas, you must have wondered what the hell a Prada store is doing there. Either Prada is planning for very distant future growth, someone in their market analysis department really screwed up, or it's freaky art mirage.

Linda Evangelista is the new face of Prada

Filed under: Style in the News

There really has been a revival of the true supermodel. The woman who doesn't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day, the one and only Linda Evangelista has been signed to be the new face of Prada.

The Pope ain't wearing Prada

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

It's not all that often that the public takes notice of what His Holiness wears. Sure, he gets to drive around in the Popemobile, and he wears a hat, but we doubt Joan Rivers has ever jumped out of a pew at Mass and asked, "Pope, darling, who are you wearing?" Not that we wouldn't kind of love to see that, but as of yet, no dice.

Tip of the day: Dip dye, ombre... whatever you want to call it

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Style Tip of the Day

After ombre was shown at Prada's 2007 fall show, lovelies like Ali Carter, Paris Hilton, and Thandi Newton ate the trend up. For spring 2008, many other designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Giles, and Adam + Eve followed suit in lighter and brighter colors.

A few tips to follow up with and you'll be ombre-tastic in minutes.

China: wealth is super-trendy

Filed under: Style in the News

While retail sales in the US and Europe are slumping, China's consumer class is just hitting the scene -- and they're willing to shell out some serious money on fashion. Designers like Prada, Armani, and Louis Vuitton are having a bonanza with newly rich Chinese who are hungry for the status symbols of conspicuous consumption. Yet, there's also a rising demand for $10,000 cocktail dresses and brands like Hermes from the growing ultra-rich class.

Traditionally, the Chinese market has been mostly dominated by accessories because of the limited space in China's crammed shopping malls -- which has led to the ridiculous level of knock-offs and forgeries. But that trend is starting to shift as retailers are steadily getting access to space where they can branch out. Coach is planning to open 50 retail stores in the mainland this over the next few years and tons of others are on the same kind of track. As you can imagine, renting a prime location for you flagship store in Shanghai is a royal rip -- but apparently it's paying off big time.

Crazy cravings: the Prada Fairy bag

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Celebrities with Style

Yeah, we're three months late to this party, but it took a little time for us to warm up to the cartoonish design on this Prada bag.

In other words, we had to see Hilary Duff carrying it before we realized that life would be so much better if we had $2,290 to blow on a trendy bag, and an inside connection at the Prada store to help us get our hands on this one.

Are you still rocking the ombre trend?

As one of the most influential designers of our time, Miuccia Prada has seen many of her designs badly reinterpreted and/or knocked-off at budget-friendly stores like Express, Forever21, and H + M.

And like any trend ripped straight from the runway, Prada's fall '07 stampede of ombré handbags and accessories are just now starting to see their influence in more affordable forms a year after they first debuted.

Crazy cravings: wooden platform sandals

Ah, summer time. Cookouts. Weekend afternoon parties. Long, warm evenings in friends' backyards. It's the season for sundresses, bare legs and pretty pedicures.

This adds up to a deep need for new sandals.

A sensible woman would get something neutral and comfortable, a pair you can wear anywhere, with anything.

Yeah. Well, good for them.

We want these crazy 4" 4.25" high, green, wooden wedge heels with a hole in the middle of them. They look moderately uncomfortable and totally hard to walk in. L-o-v-e at first sight.

They live at Target, and will come home with us for $19.99. At least we won't need to use rent money to pay for them, unlike the $700 peach suede Prada sandals smirking at us over at Neiman Marcus.
