5 Hottest Shoes for Summer

Fashion has become, literally, a whirlwind. There are dozens of shoe trends to prove our point. Some are completely unnecessary (Read: Alexander McQueen's "Barefoot" pumps) while others can be worn day and night by lay folk like us. We've weeded through the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly to present the five shoe trends on our radar for this coming spring/summer.

Palin Shoes Bring in $2,025 on eBay

Sarah Palin Style Evolution

When she was a flat-broke (but "not flat busted") student at the University of Idaho in the 1980s, Sarah Palin dressed in the frumpy-freshman's uniform of tee shirts and shorts. But by the time she took the national stage this summer, she had a chic RNC-financed wardrobe that could have paid for the $125,000 dump truck penciled into the Wasilla City budget -- with enough left over for a family shopping spree at Alaska's first Target. To see how Palin morphed from dorm-dull to camera-worthy, click on.

    Heath Family, AP

Sarah Palin -- then Sarah Louise Heath -- walked off with the Miss Wasilla crown in 1984 wearing a red and white strapless confection.

Even by 1984 standards, Palin's swimsuit for the Miss Alaska pageant was a bit modest . Here, she models a red one-piece, which she later swapped for a "Dynasty"-worthy navy sequined gown. Though Palin snagged Miss Congeniality honors in the race, she lost the title to Maryline Blackburn, the first African-American to represent Alaska in the Miss American contest.

In 1992 -- the year Donna Karan ran an ad showing a glamorous woman being sworn in as President -- 28-year-old Sarah Palin was all bold shoulders and bright earrings as she ran for the Wasilla City Council.

Dressed for success: Palin, as a member of the Wasilla City Council, wears the crisp blazer-and-white-shirt uniform favored by of legions of working women. Must have worked. Within 14 years, she was elected mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska.

Standing along the Parks Highway in Wasilla, then-Mayor Palin was the embodiment of North Face chic as she shows how to work a basic red-and-back windbreaker.

Forget how cold it gets in Alaska. In 2005, Gov. Palin's look in a pink Lilly Pulitzer sweater can be summed up in two words: Palm Beach.

For her gubernatorial inauguration ball in 2007, Palin traded the librarian's up-do and black skirt and jacket that she wore to the swearing-in ceremonies for loose curls and a raspberry portrait-collar gown.

When you're heading into the sub-zero temperatures of the Tesoro Iron Dog competition, you don't even think about wearing peep-toe pumps. Here, Palin bundles up in heavy padding, fur and lace-up boots to cheer on her husband, Todd, who has won the snow machine race across Alaska four times.

    Splash News

At a "Road to the Convention" rally last August, Palin wore a basic black suit (and her old $89 Naughty Monkey peep-toe shoes) as John McCain officially introduced her as his running mate.

    Mary Altaffer, AP

We can hardly believe it, but this strange fascination with all things Sarah Palin still hasn't run its course. Case in point, someone claiming to be Palin's niece just sold a pair of the governor's Naughty Monkey pumps -- that she reportedly bought with her own money (not like all that fancy designer stuff the RNC picked up) -- on eBay for a whopping $2,025. Regularly priced, these heels retail for about $90 -- but put the foot of a thwarted VP candidate in them, and the price skyrockets like they're some kind of relic.

No more sky-high heels ever!

Filed under: Style in the News

No matter how many of her black and white films we see on AMC or glance over the tons of iconic images featuring her signature deep eye brows and drawn on lips, there's only one thing that comes to our mind when we think of film legend Joan Crawford: "No wire hangers ever!"

Galoshes for your... heels?

SwimsWe've previously marveled at Swim's creations, keeping our favorite shoes safe from dangerous water on rainy days, but now we have even more reason to absolutely love them. Check out these new designs that look better than ever, evolved from their basic ballerina-style slip-ons. These rubber coverings look easy to pull on and slip off on days when you want to protect your shoes from rain, snow or mud.

A notable one is the new covering made specially for heels. The cut has been specialized to flatter just about every type of high-heeled shoe, tempting just about anyone to wear these even when the weather isn't so bad. Heck, even the additional traction along the bottom has been lovingly detailed into a street map. Now that's attention to detail.

Visit the Swims store for more details of this upcoming design and purchase their currently available ballerina-style galoshes. NOTCOT and Frizzifrizzi have additional pictures for drooling purposes.

Shoes of the day - Maylie by Enzo Angiolini

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

We believe that a pair of simple black leather peep-toe pumps like these from Enzo Angiolini should be a wardrobe staple akin to a black pencil skirt or a pair of jeans. Why? Because it's a classic style that goes with everything (although it's definitely not appropriate in some offices, but there is life outside of work - remember?) and allows you to show off your pedicure; so one day you're accessorizing them with demurely "nude" toenails and the other you're vamping it up in red.

When choosing a "go-to" pair of peep toes look for a heel height that you're comfortable walking in, and be sure that the toe opening fits your foot comfortably. Walking a few blocks in a pair of ill-fitting peep-toes is ugly as well as excruciatingly painful; no one wants to see your purplish toes sticking out of your shoes. Beauty doesn't always have to mean pain, you know.

They look like hooker shoes

There is just something really amazing about listening to fashion critic Suzy Menkes' voice. We're not sure if it's because of her posh accent or the precision in which she breaks downs all of the latest trends. But when she speaks, we are more often than not going to listen.

This week, Suzy tackles the new heights the footwear industry is currently reaching. Literally. Some of the most popular pumps come in at a record six and seven inches high. Ouch! We want to reach for our Dr. Scholl's gel inserts just typing that. Anyways, Suzy says the new power pumps resemble those that hookers wore in Venice three centuries ago. Her words not ours. Now, bask in the awesomeness that is Suzy and her epic slideshow video.

Shoes of the Day: Alexander McQueen Striped Leather Pumps

alexander mcqueen striped leather pumps
We're a little bit obsessed with stripes right now, even though we used to shy away from them big time, unless they were narrow and vertical.

In shoes, however, stripes will never make your feet look fat. In fact, Alexander McQueen's Striped Leather Pumps with a 5" heel (Net-a-Porter actually says 130mm, which is more than 5") will stretch your legs into long lean towers. There's a small platform rise at the peep-toe'd front to help with your balance.

Alexander McQueen's Striped Leather Pumps are $805 at Net-a-Porter.

Shoes of the Day: Zinc Missy

zinc cmissy pumpTweed is so very, well, autumn/winter, yes, and I don't know where you are, but the weather here in LA has been teasing us in and out of Spring for the last few weeks. However, with a tiny little peep-toe and flower detail at the front, the Zinc Missy pump is the perfect shoe for the transition into Spring! It's the perfect shoe to go with all that menswear-inspired garb on which you stocked up in the last few months and need to wear to get your money's worth before it gets too warm. The chunky heel stands at a modest 3¾", but eases up with a 1" platform in the front.

The Zinc Missy pump is available from Endless.com for $88.95, and since it's free overnight shipping, you won't feel bad when you only get to wear these shoes for a few more weeks.

Thinking about giving flowers for Valentine's Day? Try Prada instead.

Kristopher Dukes loves these shoes, and so do I. Guys, forget about giving some lame bouquet of roses for Valentine's Day -- if she even bothers to put them in water, they'll still die within a few days. But Prada? Prada is always a gift worth giving.

These Prada Floral Heeled Peep Toe shoes are the perfect combination of sexy and sweet. Sexy is a 4" heel and a little peep toe; sweet is a flower stem and beautiful bloom serving as that sexy 4" heel.

And who says you need to wait around for someone to give these to you as a gift? Get your sexy self a pair and make your own Valentine's dreams come true. Because, really, who's going to resist you strutting your stuff in heels like that?

Prada Floral Heeled Peep Toe, $590.

Shoes of the Day: Chanel Tweed Pumps

chanel tweed pumps
Believe me, it hurts me to think about spending over $200 on a pair of shoes, though I know it's necessary. Getting up to $500, I can do it about once a year, if we're talking about Christian, Jimmy, or Manolo. But get past $1,000 for a single pair of shoes?

These multi-colored tweed pattern pumps from Chanel are $1,116! Perhaps it's the lizard on the ankle strap, or perhaps it simply that they're from Chanel, but at a price of over a grand, I'd want to wear these to the grave.

Of course, they are on sale.

For $840.
