Coco & ScarJo Break the Red Rules

Filed under: Red Carpet Trends, Beauty Tips, Hair Cut and Style

For years redheads have been told to avoid fashion and makeup in bright shades of red, coral and pink.

Well, look who's proving the experts wrong.

Coco Rocha (at last night's annual New Yorkers For Children Spring Gala) and ScarJo (at Paris Fashion Week) bucked this staid advice and donned radiant red lip color despite their fiery locks. And don't they look fierce?

So what if both are newbies to the redhead club - we think is a trend in the making. Don't you just love when the style gurus get it wrong? I do, because it means I have license to shake things up and try verboten beauty moves, instead of my usual (read: boring) pink gloss, black mascara and shimmery beige shadow.

I'm thinking cherry red lips and major black liner tonight -- watch out Glamour Do's and Don'ts!

Scarlett Johansson in Vintage Givenchy - I Want That!

scarlett johansson

Scarlett Johansson (or should we say Reynolds?) looked every bit the bombshell in this stunning body-hugging, lace induced little black dress. While, in the beauty department, we think a little self tanner might've been a go on the leg area, we can't take our eyes off of her retro 'do and juicy red lips. Scarlett looks every bit the lady and you can too!

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Isaac Mizrahi

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

SHOW: Isaac Mizrahi
MAKEUP: Tom Pecheux
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: You're never fully dressed without a (glam red) smile

THE SCOOP: Backstage, it was all about the lips at Isaac Mizrahi's Fall 2009 Runway Show. The designer himself was very involved in the exact shade of red, saying, "this is more of a berry - we want really bright," as he told a model to eat first before going back to makeup to get her lips redone. The theme of Mizrahi's fall collection is "Smile" and "bright red lips make everyone smile," said the designer. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux garnered inspiration from the clothing. "They are very eclectic, full of fantasy and color," he said, "so I want red lips that are very sharp and clear." He used red lipstick with red pigment powder on top for an ultra matte finish. The rest of the face was left bare, save foundation and powder for "pure-looking skin." Pecheux also found the lipstick fun, and perfect for now. "It's true that women wear red lipstick during recessions," he said. "When you don't have enough money for a new outfit, handbag or shoes, you can still buy a new lipstick. But when you do spend the money, you want it to be impactful, and red lips change everything!"

Lady in red

Filed under: Style in the News, Cosmetics

A few days ago, I got an email from an event executive at Neiman Marcus about fall makeup trends. In his note, he said in all caps, "THIS FALL IS ALL ABOUT THE RED LIP!" (It's always "This [insert season] is all about [x]" with these fashion people.)

And he's right, this fall is all about red lips. But there are few things you should know about red lipstick before you go out and smear some on.

The first is that matte red lips are not for the feint of heart. If you're not a bona fide pro at application, a sheer formula is the best way to go with red lipstick. I count myself in the latter group, so don't feel bad if you do, too.

According to lipstick designer Poppy King, the second important lesson of red lips is that "Blonds and paler skinned women tend to look better in reds that are warm...brunettes and darker-skinned women tend to look better in reds that are a little bit cooler, deeper, pinker reds."
