Grey Gardens' Style Tip - A Beauty Recluse Must Be Resourceful!

Fashion types have been kvelling over the documentary Grey Gardens, long before it was reworked into the big Drew Barrymore film that airs this Saturday on HBO.

Little Edie (above left, portrayed by Drew Barrymore, above right, in the HBO feature) invented all kinds of (frankly bizarre) uses for one single garment, giving her top marks among designers and stylists. But as both a fan of the film and a beauty editor, I feel that Little Edie hasn't been given her fair due on the beauty front, where she's been equally as inventive with limited means. I'll leave it to makeup artist and Grey Gardens enthusiast Craig Jessup to break it down.

"Little Edie's sense of style was born out of her need to be resourceful," he says. Since she was a recluse, weekend jaunts to Bloomie's weren't in question (and Sephora.com didn't exist yet). "She had to edit down her look to the items that she felt were absolutely necessary, or perhaps down to the only two items she had at hand; a bright red lipstick and a black eyeliner pencil."

Gwen Stefani, style inspiration

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care, Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style

Recently our sister site Stylelist did a beauty evolution slideshow of Gwen Stefani. She had a lot of kooky looks, that Gwen. Blue hair, bindis, and that red, red lipstick. Something about that story stayed on our minds, and we finally figured it out.

Gwen owned every single look, no matter how off the wall or potentially unflattering. True, some worked better than others, but she always seemed comfortable with herself and really excited about her style. And because of that she looked terrific all the time.

We could all benefit by taking a page out of Gwen's book, and just go for it once in a while.

Style Foul: Paris Hilton is seeing red

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

Paris Hilton lipstick Poor Paris, she falls victim to so many Style Fouls, but this particular foul can happen to the best of us ... Getting lipstick (especially red lipstick) on your teeth. This beauty mishap can completely devastate your look. It's pretty amazing how a little lipstick can take you from looking posh to looking utterly insane in seconds.

The good news is this tragedy is preventable, here is how:

1.) Wash your hands.
2.) Put your index finger into your mouth (about half way).
3.) Close your lips around your finger.
4.) Pull your finger out of your mouth.

That simple (yet dirty) little trick removes the lipstick from the inner part of your lip. I am sure Paris is familiar with putting her fingers in her mouth so I am unclear on how this disaster happened to her. Plus doesn't she have a posse that should be warning her that she looks like a demented clown? I don't know maybe her posse was mad at her that day.
