J. Crew Sanur Dress - Must-Have Dresses!

This week has been brutally cold and icy in New England, so naturally my thoughts have started to turn to sunnier weather and climes. That, or course, is exactly the reason why designers bring out their resort collections right about now - but you don't have to have a couture budget (or tickets to St. Bart's) to indulge in a little summery fun.

Case in point? J. Crew's Sanur dress - $68 - and convertible! You can fold the bodice over and wear it as a skirt, or put a cardigan on top once Spring arrives. Ah, summer. How we miss you!

The Riviera's topless sunbathers are covering up

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

If you visit the beaches of St. Tropez this summer expecting to find a magical place where women feel totally comfortable baring their breasts in public, you might be disappointed. According to an article in the UK Telegraph, the glorious tradition of Brigitte Bardot is on the decline. Apparently, bare flesh isn't as fashionable in the south of France as has been in the last few decades -- and no one's quite sure why.

When we think of the Riviera, of course we think of picturesque resort communities, but only after we envision beaches teeming with topless movie stars. Take away the topless women -- and it's just another über-expensive place to get a sunburn. Some are chalking it up to cancer concerns, others blame a rising wave of prudish conservatism. We know that in the US, nudist colonies are having trouble attracting members from the younger generations.

We say: if there's anything that never goes out of fashion, it's topless ladies.

Dress of the Day: Palm Springs Dress by Syndey Los Angeles

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

sydney los angeles palm springs dressThis week, some of us are travelling, but even when we're "on vacation," we're not really on vacation because 1) heading off to different climates means we get to wear a whole new wardrobe, 2) packing is a major style activity and 3) checking out style in different cities is always educational.

For the resort traveller who is heading for sun, the Palm Springs Dress by Sydney Los Angeles is more than perfect. Though the dress is made of silk and cashmere and has long sleeves, the palm tree print on a tahitian green background and the deep and wide open V-neckline evoke a warm-weather feel. With a pair of platform wedge espadrilles the Palm Springs dress is great for a night out after spending the day sunning by the pool.

Available from CoutureCandy for $233.

How soon is too soon to shop the "resort" lines?

cole haan g seriesMuch as Halloween candy starts to appear in stores in early September and Christmas decorations are out before the Thanksgiving turkey has cooled, department stores have started pushing their "resort" lines before the first autumn leaf has even fallen. Today I received an email from Nordstrom advising me to purchase my Cole Haan resort sandals now. Now? Talk about delayed gratification. Reserve today and they promise to ship them in 13 to 15 weeks. With visions of new fall boots dancing in my head and cooler weather feeling like a blessing, the idea of new sandals is far less appealing currently. Doesn't it make more sense to wait until we are sick of fall fashion to start selling us on resort wear?
