MTV's House of Style Returns With a Thud

Filed under: Style in the News

While the rest of America had March Madness on the brain last weekend, we were thinking of one thing and one thing only: the highly anticipated return of MTV's House of Style. In fact, we pushed back a much-needed manicure appointment by an hour just so we could see how amazing the new HoS 2.0 looked in its new glossy and HD friendly form, and boy, were we ever disappointed!

You know your hair. You know what it does naturally, and you know what you want it to do. But there's that tricky step in the middle that throws us all off on occasion -- how do you get your hair to do what you want it to? It all comes down to using the right products, of course, but sometimes, it can be more than a little difficult to determine what products you really need.

TanTowels - An easy way to get a gorgeous glow

Filed under: Skin Care, Product Reviews, Beauty Tips

tantowelRegardless of what month is on the calendar, many of us like to have a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow. Especially those of us who live in southern states -- people expect us to be a little tan, you know? But, tanning beds are so last millennium -- we'll sacrifice a lot to look good, but risking skin cancer is more than we're willing to do.

Book Review - Coco Chanel: Three Weeks/1962

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Product Reviews

Coco Chanel seems to be a bit of a theme lately. There are movies and books coming out about Mademoiselle's life seemingly every hour, on the hour, and for good reason -- the woman led an incredibly interesting life, wholly deserving of being chronicled. We recently had a chance to review one of the more unique books about Coco Chanel -- Coco Chanel: Three Weeks/1962.

Rather than retell the story of how Chanel became a success, this book is filled with pictures (and a few select phrases) taken when the icon was 79 years old, when Douglas Kirkland (a very young-looking 27-year-old American photographer at the time) had the opportunity to spend three weeks taking pictures of Paris, Chanel fashion, and, of course, Chanel herself.

Old Navy Tall and Petite - StyleList review

Old Navy recently gave us $30 to pick out something from their Tall and Petite options and try it on for size -- so to speak. We asked our resident Jolly Green Giant, Kristen Seymour, to give it a whirl. Here's what she came back with.

Those of us on the tall side (or petite) know that it's not always just the length of clothing that's an issue -- when you're taller, you might have the all around bone structure to match. I know I do -- I have broad shoulders, which is an issue with many shirts, jackets, and dresses.

Old Navy knows this, and created their Petite and Tall clothing with this in mind. Petites, for women 5'4" and under, have narrowed shoulders, higher arm openings, shorter sleeves and length, narrowed hips and waist, and a shorter inseam. Talls, for women 5'10" and over, offer an extra half inch in the shoulders (yahoo!), longer sleeves and body, a lower waist, and longer inseam.

Review: Oral B Pulsonic toothbrush

Okay, let's get this out of the way: don't all electric toothbrushes seem like vibrators for your mouth?

We're actually totally at peace with the similarities. In fact, we don't even know how to brush our teeth anymore unless there are batteries involved. How do you know when to move to the next quadrant unless you hear a beep?

As an ardent lover of the vibratory toothbrush, we were quite pleased to be offered a sneak preview of the Oral B Pulsonic. We've been using it for a few days, and so far...we like!

We tried it, we liked it: Elements of BlissWire Underwire bra

Filed under: Swimwear and Lingerie, Product Reviews

A couple of weeks ago we filled you in on a new bra entering the market -- Warner's Elements of BlissWire bra. Well, our friends at Warner's provided us with a sample to try out so we could see for ourselves whether the Elements of BlissWire bra was truly a new level of comfort. We've had a chance to wear it around, and we've made our decision.

Stila review: long wear lip color

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Our second Stila product for review was Long Wear Lip Color. We've admitted before that we're lazy about reapplying lip color, so we were excited to try one that purported to be a soft-on-the lips hybrid gloss, with serious staying power.

We rotated the three colors over the course of a week:
  • Serenade -- golden red (weekend brunch color)
  • Coquette -- pink mauve (tasteful day wear)
  • Rendezvous -- brown reddish (dramatic night out)

Stila review: Perfecting concealer

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Stila's Perfecting Concealer is a semi-matte concealer designed to hide "under eye circles, scars, redness, and other imperfections."

We were really excited to try this out because, even after getting a full night's sleep, we tend to have under eye circles, but now that we're no longer 18, some concealers and foundations end up making our smile lines (because we do not have wrinkles -- our face is simply used to smiling and being happy) more obvious.

Stila review: kajal eyeliner

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

We are heavy eyeliner users, both figuratively and literally, so we've experienced the full gamut of textures: waxy, smudgy, crumbling and smooth. Based on this broad experience, we feel confident in our definitive pronouncement that Stila Kajal Eyeliner is the silkiest pencil we've ever used.

Now before you think we're a pushover for free stuff, let us say that super silky can be a good and bad thing.

Stila review: Lip glaze

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

First of all, we are huge fans of lip gloss -- it's seriously one of the easiest ways to make yourself look just a little more put together at the last minute. Stila's lip glaze is a best seller, and they call it "an essential addition to any beauty bag."
